I have an Otari DTR-8S pro deck for sale. This is a pro deck that is
very similar to the Fostex D-5 and the Tascam DA-20 MkII, but it's
actually better than either of those two both in terms of construction
and features. Absolutely no SCMS, balanced I/O, AES/EBU inputs (but
they work perfectly fine with D8's version of S/PDIF), etc. Two nice
features that neither the D-5 nor the DA-20 have are: (1) a head hours
display and (2) "character pack", which allows you to write up to 60
characters at each Start ID. The latter is great for adding song
titles/info and then watching it scroll on the display when you get to
that track.
The unit is in excellent cosmetic and working condition, was very
lightly used, and comes with the original manual, remote control, rack
mounting brackets, and even the original box. I'll also throw in a
pair of XLR --> RCA cables that will allow you to connect it to an amp
that doesn't have XLR inputs.
I'm asking $360 + shipping for the whole thing, but I'll entertain
other offers.
Please reply directly to me, not to the mailing list.

I'm sure this will spark some lively debate.
Having dealt with this on a number of occasions, my take is this:
editing dead air as it were between songs, and even applause (if its
long) is fine. doing compression/volume changes/normalization/eq is
fine, but I always say when I've done it. Not specifics, but just "EQ"
or "edited". Most people I wind up giving CDs to (friends) really don't
care. When trading I don't pretend an edited version is a master tape;
I *ALWAYS* keep the master if it is anything I'm even slightly
interested in.
In the end I'd rather have a well-done edited tape/CD-R than the
original master. if whomever did the work is competent then I'd like to
have the fruits of their labor. However, if I don't think they
did/would do a good job, then I'll take the master. (Another reason to
keep masters around).
Another possibility when you're just over 80min: use two discs, but put
about 40 min on each. much nicer. Or, put another show, or part of
another show, on disc 2. I've done both of these alternatives before.
About the only thing I say one definitely should not do is cut music -
if there is a song you hate why it's your CDs and you can do what you
want, but of course you should say that its an edited version of a show
- OR doing stunts like pitchshifting / time-squeezing ever so slightly
to squeeze 81 min down to 80. Even if its just applause it could be
weird enough that one would wonder what the heck is going on with the
recording and wonder what else is wacky.
Ok that was longer than I thought it would be.
FWIW,
Jesse

personally, i don't have much of a problem with editing out crowd noise
inbetween songs as long as it's really just 'dead air' as opposed to
time when the band is yacking/tuning/whatever.
and i'd like to know that such a recording was edited in that fashion.
of course, if you were saving things as data disks (shn or ape) instead
of audio discs, you could just include a text file describing what happened
as far as editing goes (not to mention the fact that you could squeeze
quite a bit more than 80 minutes onto a cdr...)
cheers!

This is for last month's Robert Hunter show at the Beacon
Theatre, NYC on 5/04/02. It was recorded w/ DPA mics
from the first row center of the balcony, and is on one
Sony 90m DAT.
In return, I'd like one sealed Sony or Maxell 90m DAT
plus postage.
First to respond after the Digest hits my mailbox gets it
(unless you're willing to do B+P's for others, which I
would give preference to....in which case tell me how
many you're willing to make).

Why not overburn the CD? You can fit almost 83

Subject: active 7pin in need of repair...
Date: Mon, 24 Jun 2002 14:45:23 GMT
Hello out there...
I am seeking some advice on where to send my active 7pin I/O cable (for my pcm-m1) to be repaired. The output on the cable works fine but the input drops in and out with movement of the cable. upon inspection it appears that the head (7pin end) is loose and i believe one of the wires may have become un-sodered. Anyone have reccomendations where to send this to get it fixed correctly and cheaply? also would it be possible to fix it myself if i had a sodering gun? any info would be greatley appreciated.

Subject: 24bit A/D -> 16 bit recorders, what happens... ?
Date: Mon, 24 Jun 2002 11:49:41 -0700
I've seen the "Copy Prohibit" flash on my M-1 when trying to record spdif *from* my maudio delta dio24/96.
(this was 16-bit/48khz wav file) Some signals consistently produced the copyprohibit frustration, other tapes worked fine.
before 24-bit/96khz recordings were happening, professionals used a/d and d/a converters which did their conversions
into and/or out of the digital domain at 20-bit or even 24-bit and then resampled down to 16-bit.
So even though a device would be labeled "now! with extra-fancy 20/24-bit ad converter",
when all is said and done it would still be feeding your dat with a 16-bit signal.
The reason being that the approximations made at the higher bit-rate get eliminated when resampled to the lower bit-rate. If you do the a/d conversion at the same bit-rate you're recording at, the approximations stay as they are.
So now that some are actually recording at 24-bit, are we going to see super-duper 36-bit a/d converters any time soon?

No. The physics doesn't work. (I don't think there are any true
24-bit converters with accurate lsb yet, anyway.)

Subject: Suddenly dead decks?
Date: Mon, 24 Jun 2002 19:01:51 -0700 (PDT)
I own a DA-20 (not mkii, bought it used three years ago) and a D8 (bought
new five years ago) that have been 99% problem-free as long as I've owned
them. Today I was doing a DAT>HD dump from my DA-20 through the S/PDIF out
when the power went off about 95 minutes into the transfer. I came home
from work to find my deck around 1:35:00, figured out what happened, and
rewound the tape. I hit play and the tape got eaten a little bit, so I
took it out, slid the shutter back, tightened the hub, and put it back in.
Nothing. The tape's a little chewed up on the sides so I advance it a bit
by spinning the hub with a small screwdriver. Nothing again.
After a few rides in and out on the tray, I changed the counter mode from
A-time to (I guess) regular time and for some reason got it to play,
finally. Hit rewind, record on my computer, and play again - nothing. Then
I tried the tape in my D8 - nothing. Puzzled, I try another tape, and
nothing again.
Over the last couple of hours, I've tried a half-dozen known good tapes
from various sources - analog>digital dumps I've done, clones I've run of
other people's tapes, masters I've made on the D8, and NONE of the tapes
I've tried will play on either machine. The D8 treats them like they're
blank (LOAD/TOP on loading, and then FFW gives me BLANK), and the DA-20
will FFW/REW fine but the sample rate indicator never changes from 48 to
44.1kHz for tapes that I know were recorded at 44.1.
I can see how maybe the DA-20 might have gotten messed up from having the
power suddenly shut off with a tape engaged in the heads, but the D8 was
plugged in through a surge protector and I have no idea why it would be
toast. I tried turning both off for a few hours, running head-cleaning
tapes, but absolutely nothing is being recognized.
I'm currently at my wit's end because I know these tapes were recording 12
hours ago (I have the partial WAV on my HD to prove it, and the 20-second
snippet that I did get to play after a few in/out rides on the tray).
Short of taking them in to a service center, has anyone ever experienced
anything like this?
