From: Scott Goodwin <coryphaena_29403@juno.com> Subject: My brand-new D8 is broken (Re: Suddenly dead decks?) Date: Tue, 25 Jun 2002 08:08:10 -0700 Here's one for you: Got home from Bonnaroo last night about 8. Sat down to start a transfer from a D8 > wav *before* getting in the shower. (Those of you who were at Bonnaroo will know that starting my first transfer before getting in the shower was not an easy thing to do!!) I will point out that this deck is a BRAND NEW D8. I literally broke the seal on the box, plugged it into the wall wart, and it turned on fro the very first time. I put a Sony ProDAT 125 (my Mofro tape) in the D8, closed it up, and plugged in my computer's 1/8' stereo line in (analog) just to have a quick listen before firing up CoolEdit, and the deck's power just shut off. Hmm. I turned it back on and hit "rewind" to get back to the start of the show and got "load" with the slowly-moving long bar below it for about ten seconds, and then another spontaneous power-down. Hmm. Hitting play would produce the same results, with the "load" indicator lighting up for about ten secs, then complete powering down. Seems this D8 might have some new "undocumented features"... Removing the line-out 1/8" seemed to make things work properly, so I did that, then wound the tape back and attempted to use headphones to see if a different output target would make a difference. No such luck. I tried another tape, and got the same results. I tried a new 90m blank and got the same results. I tried older DAT masters that I * know* work, and no dice. I switched to battery power with four brand-new Duracells to see if the wall power was bunk, and it seemed to help a little. I finally mananged to get a tape rewound, and playing into the headphones - it was packed with diginoise and virtually unrecognizable. Last resort, I tried a quick pass with a cleaning DAT. I inserted it, I ran it for five seconds, and the deck powered down (like it's been doing the whole time). That was last night, and today it remains as it was then: The deck is dead, and will not power up under any circumstances whatsoever: pure battery, pure 6VDC from the wall with the batteries in it, 6V with the sled in it but not batteries, or 6V with the sled removed. It will not power up at all. Sooo, besides sending this piece of junk back to Sony, anybody got any theories? All advice appreciated - SWG

I have a strong suspicion that the one tape gunked up my D8 after getting chewed by my DA-20; I ran my dry cleaning tape for a few more passes on both decks and it cleared up temporarily, but I think it's going to need a good wet cleaning. Off to buy some denatured alcohol and foam swabs - thanks to all who offered suggestions! --Dave

From: "Marc Nutter" <nutter@sonicsense.com> Subject: 24 bit recording Date: Tue, 25 Jun 2002 17:33:00 -0600 Hi All, Having just returned from Bonnaroo, I'm still scrambling around here to catch up but the discussions about 24-bit recording caught my attention. First, as others have stated, a DAT machine can only store 16-bits. The ONLY exception is the Tascam DA-45HR (3 rack space unit, also already mentioned). Some have indicated that the M-1 does have apply dither to a 20-bit signal but the bottom line is that the DAT tape can only store 16-bits. This is why proper high-quality dither/word length reduction is so important. The primary goal is to create the best 16-bit representation of the 20 or 24-bit sample with minimal distortion. UV22, SBM-1, NS..., NN... are all word length reduction algorithms. The issue discussed about "copy prohibit" almost certainly has nothing to do with sending a 24-bit signal. Oddly enough, I have never seen an M-1 give this message. Are you sure it didn't say "no input"? While selecting a sample rate above 48kHz will cause a DAT machine to be unable to record (ie. "No Input" message), a DAT machine will still record if it sees a 20 or 24-bit sample (word length). As Seth indicated, the DAT machine will truncate (drop) the least significant bits. Be sure if you are patching from someone who is recording at 24-bit that you have a 16-bit feed. Your machine will NOT give you any indication of a problem. If you are receiving a "copy prohibit" message, make sure you are receiving a 48k or 44.1kHz signal on a S/PDIF output NOT AES/EBU as it carries no channel status and will cause the consumer machines to default to "copy prohibit". The next possibility is that the converter is sending AES output on a S/PDIF line with professional channel status. In either case, this basically means the converter is passing NO SCMS information that the recorder understands. This is problematic to the consumer decks (D7, D8, D-100) that want to see "consumer channel status" with SCMS of either 11 or 10 (11 is what we prefer). We have seen the above situations with the Apogee AD-500, some 1000's, the first few AD2K+'s, and a few Graham-Patten ADC or DMIC-20's that were not properly modified for consumer use. Sorry this may not solve your problem. I look forward to insight from others. BWT, watch out for some Bonnaroo offers, All FOB at 24/96. I'm spinning DATS for the next few days--NO grovels PLEASE! From: sec1968@ezl.com Subject: editing Date: Tue, 25 Jun 2002 18:59:32 -0500 Sorry about the earlier test. I kept getting bounced. Anyway, here's what I was trying to say: What i've done, and still do when I need to, is fade out/fade in the crowd noise between the last song and the encore. More than likely you'll pick up at least a minute of time, and you're not wasting anything important to the show, such as between song stories by the band and the like. shane From: Dave C <dlc-dat@halibut.com> Subject: To edit or not to edit? Date: Sat, 22 Jun 2002 20:49:15 -0700 Since I've got only a single M1, I'm trading only on CD-R. Once again, I find myself with an 81-minute performance. Last time, it was 83 minutes. What is the general consensus on editing or time-squeezing (sample dropping/interpolating with Cool Edit) applause and other non-music sections? It's frustrating to have to use 2% of a second CD. If I shorten it by invisible trickery, it's no longer a true impression of the live performance. But neither is changing the CD in the stereo. Thanks....
