Hi all,
I just listed these for sale on eBay, if anyone's interested. They are
omnidirectional stealth microphones made by The Sound Professionals, about
four years old, hardly used, in perfect condition. The link is at:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=889548811
When I originally bought these several years ago, I posted a long
review/comparison of these mikes vs. the Coresounds to dat-heads. If
you're interested, it's archived at:
http://www.solorb.com/dat-heads/digests/V4.000/D059
Thanks, and please email (without the "nospam" in my address!) with any
questions!

well lets see, your average d8 uses 250 mA * 6V = 1.5W
so its technically possible, but considering the majority of the shows you
tape are indoors or outdoors at night, you'd be out of luck a better
application would be to charge rechargeable batteries with it, then use
those batteries in your equipment.
a slow charge like this puts the best charge on your batteries anyway.

Subject: DAT storage options (long)
Date: Tue, 25 Jun 2002 20:33:51 -0400
Hi all,
Here's some ideas for dat storage that I've collected over time (mostly
plaigarized from the digests, in no particular order). I've added updates
to some of the older ones, and included several new items, especially for
high-dollar, high-volume storage.
Some are generic storage boxes that happen to work for dat, while others
are purpose-built dat containers. Here we go, roughly ordered from
small-and-cheap to huge-and-expensive:
1) From Gary Smith - I just found the "perfect" DAT storage box. It's a
cigar box. The ones I got from my local cigar shop are made of wood & there
are several different sizes that work just fine.
The Macanudo "hyde park Cafe" box of 25 stores 18 DAT's in 2 rows of 9
each. (The perfect fit too, 1/2" space between the 2 rows & 1/8" headspace
between the dats & the top.
Primo Del Ray "Almirantes" Box of 25 have nearly the same dimensions as the
"Hyde Park Cafe" box but the gap between the 2 rows is 1".
The Macanudo "Hampton Court Cafe" box of 25 is an OK fit but is larger in
area. Not large enough for 3 rows, too narrow for two rows lengthwise but
you can put 3 extra dats along the one side for a fit of 21 in all.
There might be other sizes but I collected 10 of these boxes & I quit
looking for more.
How about that for a DAT freebe?
======
Similarly, from JC Mahoney - For what it's worth, I accidentally found that
an empty Arturo Fuente Chateau Fuente (not double chateau) cigar box
perfectly holds 42 DATs better than any box I have ever seen. It will hold
them in 3 rows of 14. Fuentes are much more common on the East Coast, and
the empty boxes are typically given away at the smoke shop. The boxes are
made of a cedar ply. Time to get rid of those cardboard tape boxes from 1990.
2) From Andrew Kimball on 11/99 - I just picked up an unfinished wooden box
from Ikea for $20.00. I think its a variation of the "Moppe Mini-Chest". It
has 3 drawers, each holding 60 dats perfectly. not bad for the money!!
[Updated 2/2000: It's still available, photo is on their web site, search
on "Moppe": http://www.ikea.com or http://www.ikea-usa.com ]
3) "Iris USA" makes multi-drawer chests which are designed for general
storage but happen to fit dats very well. They are smoky-clear plastic
drawers in a plastic case. Looks like it was made by Tupperware or
Rubbermaid: cheap, basic, and functional. They make 'em in a whole range
of sizes, from simple plastic shoebox to a 3-foot-high, multi-drawer filing
cabinet. Go to:
http://www.officedepot.com
and search on "Iris" or "Iris Mega" for photos. (Note: as of 2/2002, if
you search on just "Iris" you will probably see more than 1 page worth of
hits, so be sure to eyeball the whole lot). The 6-drawer version holds
three rows of 23 DATs per drawer, or 414 total. It costs about $30, and
has wheels for easy moving.
4) From Jonathan Corbet - At my local Target store I found the "catalog
saver box." I'm not much into saving catalogs, but I was pleased to
discover that each box very nicely holds 64 DATs (a beautiful, round
number). They fit in almost perfectly, and the boxes stack well, allowing
for space-efficient storage. I just went and bought a bunch more for the
whole collection.
[Updated 2/2000: Don't think this exact model is still available, but you
can just check out the plastic bins at Target/Kmart/Wall-mart or wherever,
and see what fits. Rubbermaid makes a whole line of Home Storage plastic
boxes, too - photo's are on their website at http://www.rubbermaid.com .]
5) From Gordon Gidluck - Exponent makes a pretty nice case with a pull out
drawer. These units are also stackable. Each can hold 72 tapes in plastic
cases. They are $48.95 each. We use these at my work and they serve the
purpose and have a neat appearance. They come in ivory or gray. You can
get them through Dartek and others:
Dartek: (800) 832-7835.
http://www.dartek.com
6) Bryco Products, (800) 932-8729, has a great selection of both
on-the-wall and portable DATRAX storage systems, which they
manufacture. Bryco carries:
- Portable nylon cases of various sizes (8-40 dats)
- Plastic and Oak DATRAX of various sizes (8-60 dats)
Their website is at: http://www.brycoproducts.com/
7) Nice homemade wooden shelf units can be had from Uncle Jon's
Woodshop. Various sizes, 100-375 dat capacity, $49-$139 cost. Website
with photos and prices is at:
http://www.ujws.com/
8) Homemade wooden slotted-tray units (and one drawer unit) can be had from
Custom Display Products. Various sizes, 120-360 dat capacity. Photo's are
available but they don't seem to have a web page, so email them at the
address below for the latest pix & prices:
Custom Display Products
626 Odell Road
Mansfield, PA 16933
phone: 570-662-1166
email: custdisp@epix.net
9) From Randy Vogel and also Jeff Bowen - old wooden library card catalog
will hold 2000-4000 dats very nicely. Sturdy, unique, solid oak, and
available at auction from your local switching-to-computers library for
$50-$200 (or from your local antique store for an arm and a leg...).
[Updated 2/2000: Not many libraries are dumping these any more, they're
becoming collector's items. Regularly available on eBay for $500
plus. They look GREAT! But, make sure the insides are
spotless. Disintigrating wood dust and refinish fumes are bad for dats.]
10) In addition to the DATRAX described above, Bryco Products also now has
a GREAT steel cabinet with 4 drawers that hold a total of 320 dats. For
larger collections, the units can be stacked or mounted on an optional
rolling base. Locking drawers are available. Each unit costs
$300-$400. Photos are on the website:
http://www.brycoproducts.com/
11) From Ray Peck - I found some steel cabinets from Germany that are just
great. They come in a multitude of heights and widths. Mine are about
36-40 inches high and about 15 inches wide and 20 inches deep. Each drawer
is just the right depth to hold cassette, 8mm or DATs "the tall way", or of
course DATs the short way. They're "moderne euro designer" style
furniture, not ugly office stuff, IMO. About $350 a cabinet. I think
they'll hold about 800-1000 DATs short-ways (I forget, exactly), the way I
currently have them, and 50% more on edge. When I fill the cabinet up with
800 tapes, I'll just print 800 labels from my database and turn all the
boxes on end. 8-)
I odered them from a place called "The Magazine" in Berkeley (CA). Their
number is 510 549 2796. They're a fancy euro furniture store.
[Updated 2/2002: if Ray means the "Muller Mobelfabrikation" brand bathroom
drawer-cabinets, they're still available but cost over $1000. Photos are
on The Magazine's website at: http://www.themagazine.org ]
12) Get them custom-made. Mitch Grunat did this and they look great. They
cost about $1,000, but custom cabinetry 'ain't cheap (unless you do your
own work). If you want to get some ideas, his site has pictures:
http://www2.inetdirect.net/~disndat/
[Updated 2/2002: The photo site is either dead or has moved. Anyone got
the current site?]
13) From Rob Shiner - http://www.musicstorage.com/ the cassette cube will
hold 4 rows of 22 dats for a total of 440 dats. A little pricey
($290-ish), but quality construction. I live in Boston, and went to one of
the local wood shops that builds unfinished stuff. They custom built a
Dat rack for me that holds 27 dats x 15 rows = 405 dats for $75.
14) From Kurt Vogel - I just saw an add in one of those fancy-smancy
"audiophile" magazines for a place (guy?) making custom wooden cabinets for
DATs, CDs, etc and wrote down the info:
Per Madsen Design
(800)821-4883
The photo in the add showed what looked like a nice solid cabinet (for
CDs). I have no affiliation but I was going to call him and get more
info. If anyone can comment on these cabinets I'd be interested. He's
based in San Francisco.
[Updated 2/2002: They're still in business, here's their website with
photo's: http://www.rackittm.com ]
15) From the illustrious Jeff Lester: A custom-made armoire-type piece of
furniture with pull-out drawers. A different cabinet than Mitch Grunat's,
but maybe it will give you some ideas:
http://www.jlfurniture.com/Contact/Grateful_Dead_Tape_Cabinet/grateful_dead_tape_cabinet.html
15) And finally, again from Jeff Lester: For medium to very high-volume
storage, Russ Bassett Corporation, at
http://www.russbassett.com/
carries high capacity metal cabinets that are very pricey ($1000-2000 for
their lateral DAT cabinets). I even went and visited their plant.
---
Scott's notes on Russ Basset: Check out their web site; this stuff looks
GREAT. All sizes with a capacity from 270 to 20,000+ dats. They offer
shelf storage and also cabinets with pull-out drawers. The units look like
they were made for libraries or government offices - heavy, high-quality
steel shevles with a plain (though nice) finish.
The Small Stackables (w/pull-out drawers) have a 270-Dat capacity and list
for about $350 per unit. Base unit is a couple bucks more.
The Extra Deep Stackables (more pull-out drawers) have a 1,760-Dat capacity
and list for - yikes! - $1,245.00 per unit.
And if you are really insane, they even have whole-wall units that hold
10,000 dats each...

I've seen this on an M-1 with a corrupt S/PDIF signal input. On some
of the earlier C-Media cards, the 48K S/PDIF output would get corrupted
into what I think was a signal with the 44.1 bit set, but with 48K data.
The M-1 refused to record giving the "copy prohibit" message. A Denon
DTR-80P would accept it and claim it was 44.1, but the actual recording
to the tape was pitch-shifted as if there was 48K signal played at 44.1
(and it was distorted too as if bits/frames were dropped). It seems to
me that the M-1 probably uses the "copy prohibit" message when it can't
figure out exactly what's wrong.

If it is new outta da box; try to get it replaced by the vendor as DOA; Sony
has provisions for this. If that won't work, send it to a Sony service
