Subject: A technical question: IEC958 Pro versus SPDIF
Date: Wed, 3 Jul 2002 09:11:51 -0700
This is a technical discussion with a practical question for the experienced
members of this list.
The question: After changing the physical format of SPDIF (defined as
'consumer' by IEC958 specification), will professional equipment that is
looking for AES-EBU (AES6) and/or IEC958 Professional accept the audio data
stream from SPDIF (IEC958 consumer)?
From what I understand, AES-EBU audio converged to AES6. That was merged in
an international standard, IEC958 which defined both consumer digital audio
(commonly known as SPDIF) and a Professional level. The consumer and
professional standards have different connectors and physical voltages,
which I can deal with, changing SPDIF to the Professional physical interface
with a few parts.
However, both the consumer SPDIF and the professional have tables of
(meta)data included in the audio data. The AES-EBU spec and IEC958 Pro are
identical tables up to a point where AES-EBU left some open/undefined
fields, and therefore they are, I understand, effectively interoperable.
The consumer IEC958 has the same initial table fields but highly abbreviated
when compared to the Professional IEC958. If common equipment pretty much
ignores the extended data, then SPDIF audio converted to the IEC958 Pro
physical interface should work.
Does it in the real world? I need some understanding that it will work
before I sent a piece of gear out (multiple times, multiple places, multiple
equipment types that expect IEC958 Pro) and find it will not operate....
The folks on this list seem to be a very widely experienced and likely to
know the practical answer. Thanks in advance for any help.
Regards,
Mike Yates

Subject: An Indigo Girls taping experience
Date: Wed, 3 Jul 2002 08:45:38 -0700 (PDT)
Summary [for those with short attention spans]: Off
the front of a balcony (if in a theater where the
balcony sounds decent) is probably your best bet.
Details [for those who are planning to tape]: First
time I've not been in the first couple of rows for an
IG show, figuring I'd be better off near the sweet
spot - 18 rows back, center aisle. I didn't try to
bring a stand in, but with a full pack of equipment I
wasn't even questioned when handing over my ticket -
kudos to IG's team - it does appear they are notifying
the venue.
In lieu of attempting to bring in/set up a
freestanding stand, I clamped a fixed-height ORTF
setup to the arm rest, about 2 inches over head
height. None of the "staff"-shirted hired hands nor
ushers questioned the arrangement, though one of the
uniformed security types did stop by asking if I had
permission - a printout of
http://www.indigogirls.com/corresp/2002/2002-06-17.html
satisfied him. I'd strongly advise bringing a copy
(or 2) along.
Having been so close to the stage in shows past, I'd
been pretty oblivious to the state of the crowd behind
me - it's probably been this way for years, but I've
not noticed. Long story short, anything familiar was
taken to be an invitation to stand by varying portions
of the crowd, turning what was 2 inches over
head-height into pretty much butt-height for better
than half the show. Anything slow and quiet was taken
by a third of the crowd as an opportunity to get up
and get more beer or empty out what had already been
consumed. Anything loud and involving electric
guitars was taken by another third of the crowd to do
the same. In other words, near constant aisle traffic
resulting in a couple of mic bumps and dozens of
whooshing near misses (as an aside, It's been quite
some time since I've seen so many patrons of a theater
show not buzz-drunk, but stumble-drunk). I've only
spot-checked the tape, but naturally, sound field
interruptions abound. A height-adjustable setup
rather than the fixed-height arrangement I used may
have helped, but it would have had to have been
raised/lowered at least a dozen times during the show,
trading one imperfection for another. I wasn't
expecting an all sit-down show, but I wasn't expecting
so much standing and moving.
Which brings me back to the summary above - unless
you're familiar with a spot in the theater that A)
sounds good, B) where a clamped stand (no word on
freestanding ones) wouldn't obstruct sightlines, and
C) would allow the mics to be a good 3 feet or more
over the seated patrons in front of you (since can't
count on them being seated that much), I'd strongly
recommend going for a seat with access to a natural
boundary - a balcony railing or perhaps the front row
of a dramatically raised section on the floor.
Failing that, perhaps a mobile stealth setup would
still be your best bet - there's some perfectly decent
stealthed shows out there from years past.
Best of luck to those that try - they certainly put on
an enjoyable show.

Date: Wed, 3 Jul 2002 12:57:21 -0700 (PDT)
Hello all:
I just joined the list today and would like to post my
first question
:-) I have the opportunity to get a Sony DTC 57ES from
a neighbor who
is
moving out and he is willing to sell it to me for
about $50 because the
deck rolls the tape when playing. I consider myself
capable of
undertaking minor and mid-sized repair projects and
that is why I would
like to
ask if it is at all worth getting this unit from him
and also if
anybody could provide me with information as to what
the most likely
cause of
the problem could be or any hints as to how to get it
repaired. Please
note that I live in Germany in case you want to
provide information
like stores for parts or stuff like that.
Thank you in advance.

Ok, just as I'm finally about to get Vanilla Fudge to open up and allow open
taping, I got the word at the 6/29/02 show of a bootlegger on ebay.....just
received the info, and posting it here immediately. As I'm not savvy to the
workings of ebay to place the fake bids and/or get the guy thrown off of
there, it's time for those in the know to do their thing....have fun,
guys....and oh, yes, please if you can find out the guys name, address, etc,
please pass it along to me so I can pass this info on to the band. If there
is anything necessary as far as a statement by a band or rep saying that
this is an unauthorized recording being sold, please contact me and I can
get that statement fairly quickly.
Thanks for yet another posting,

Subject: Taping at Indy Summer Stages?
Date: Wed, 3 Jul 2002 17:46:55 -0400 (EDT)
Howdy,
The official event policy is no audio / no video / expect to be searched
as given on the web site. Does anyone have any experience with this
festival when taper-friendly bands are playing? One stage on Saturday has
Todd Snider, Cowboy Mouth, Galactic, Los Lobos and Widespread, all known
to be fine w. the taping scene. Seems the organizers could have
segregated the taper bands in one area to facilitate the enjoyment of
audio enthusiasts. Or should I expect the blanket policy to be in effect?
An email to the contact person for the promoter/organizer has gone
unanswered. TIA.
peace & music,
jeff

Subject: NDC: Fedex Ground warning
Date: Wed, 03 Jul 2002 15:25:03 -0700
I apologize for the lack of direct DAT-content, but this has to do with
my experience having DATs shipped to me.
I just went through an annoying experience with having a bunch
of blank DATs shipped to me via FedEx ground. Along the
way I learned a few key pieces of info that FedEx doesn't
advertise about their ground shipping. Who delivers FedEx ground
packages? FedEx employees don't; "independent contractors" do the
deliveries. In addition to that, FedEx has no way of contacting them.
So if there is a problem with your delivery, the driver won't contact you,
and if you call FedEx they can't talk to the driver to fix the problem.
In addition to those hard facts, my personal experience leads me
to believe the "independent contractors" are incompetent, unlike
most real FedEx employees. They attempted delivery three times before
they could figure out where I live. I checked the label on the package
and it was the (correct) address that I receive numerous UPS
packages at w/o any problems.
I just wanted to point this out to DAT-heads who rely on mail-order
for their DATs (which is about 99.9% of the list). I placed a DAT
order on June 20th, and it barely arrived in time for High
Sierra. So my advice is to avoid FedEx ground if you need your
DATs/equipment to arrive in time for a concert.
BWT: Look for me to offer up B+P of some '02 High Sierra shows.

Hi Rudy,
I'm using the Opcode Sonicport with XP. It is perfectly recognised as a =
USB sound device, and I can play and record with it
without any problems. The only downside is that the Opcode configuration =
utility does NOT work under XP. So you cannot select
sample rate, input (analog/digital) etc. while running XP. I have made a =
dual-boot system with XP and Win98, so I can set the configuration
under 98 and use it under XP. This also allows me to keep on racing, =
because my MS (!!!) SideWinder Racing Steer is not supported under XP :-(
Take care,
