You must use a phono preamp to invert the RIAA EQ curve and amplify the
signal to line level. The cheaper standalone preamps generally suck; adding
more noise and hum. Use the record out on your hi-fi preamp into the line
level input of the card.
Thanks!

The Tour Just Started and I have plenty to Trade
From: Mike Yates <myates@stdcom.com>
Subject: A technical question: IEC958 Pro versus SPDIF
Date: Fri, 5 Jul 2002 09:10:08 -0700
This is a technical discussion to give a foundation for practical question
for the experienced members of this list.
The question, first: After changing the physical format of SPDIF (defined as
'consumer' by IEC958 specification), will professional equipment that is
looking for AES-EBU (AES6) and/or IEC958 Professional accept the audio data
stream from SPDIF (IEC958 consumer)?
From what I understand, AES-EBU audio converged to AES6. That was merged in
an international standard, IEC958 which defined both consumer digital audio
(commonly known as SPDIF) and a Professional level. The consumer and
professional standards have different connectors and physical voltages,
which I can deal with, changing SPDIF to the Professional physical interface
with a few parts.
However, both the consumer SPDIF and the professional have tables of
(meta)data included in the audio data. The AES-EBU spec and IEC958 Pro are
identical tables up to a point where AES-EBU left some open/undefined
fields, and therefore they are, I understand, effectively interoperable.
The consumer IEC958 has the same initial table fields but highly abbreviated
when compared to the Professional IEC958. If common equipment pretty much
ignores the extended data, then SPDIF audio converted to the IEC958 Pro
physical interface should work.
Does it in the real world? I need some understanding that it will work
before I sent a piece of gear out (multiple times, multiple places, multiple
equipment types that expect IEC958 Pro) and find it will not operate....
The folks on this list seem to be a very widely experienced and likely to
know the practical answer. Thanks in advance for any help.

Mike Yates

Subject: off topic - fed ex ground
Date: Fri, 05 Jul 2002 12:11:57 -0400
hi,
here's what i know about fed ex ground. they are operated by guys that
own the routes and work for themselves. they used to be roadway express(
RPX) routes. fed ex bought roadway and started a ground service. all fed ex
ground packages get sent thru the old roadway system. my bro-in-law was a
RPX guy, and sold his route when fed ex took over. they were forced to
deliver the fed ex ground packages at a rediculously low rate, i believe at
the time a few years ago it was 25 cents per package, no matter how big or
heavy. fed ex couldnt give two shits about the ground packages and pay dick
to deliver them. no wonder stuff gets lost and broken. you get what you pay
for. use fed ex ground , pay fed ex good money, and fed ex in turn spends
peanuts to get the package delivered. i dont know for sure if its any
differnet now, except that the RPX trucks have been repainted fex ex ground
colors now. UPS isnt much better, and those guys make nice money. ive had
two claims for damage in 6 months with them, and i'm not a heavy shipper by
any means. i was told by a UPS guy that gateway used those dopey cow boxes
so UPS knows they are gateway computers and doesnt play rugby with them. a
lot of people that ship electronics stay away from UPS.

quoted from earlier post:
"However, this year taping in the lawn is being strictly enforced. I
have not heard of ANYBODY getting away w/ running a stand FOB at ANY
level at any of the PLQ shows so far this Summer."
this is a contradiction to what I have been hearing on other lists.
For example, this was on the OTF board this morning;
" If anyone is going to any of these shows that are left for the Summer
I would try to get pavillion tickets because the venues will let you run
anywhere, me and Scott just got back from running Riverbend,Cuyahoga and
Pine Knob."
now this isn't universal for the summer, I'm sure. Venues will differ.....
but it's nice to see that things are not as tight as they might appear
to be.
It's all about staying low profile, even when it's allowed.
happy taping...

There were 4 or 5 stands clearly visible in the pavilion at Deer Creek.
They were around 8ft high. I couldn't tell for sure, but I think one
was FOB.
My thoughts are...set up in the pavilion, and if they say tear down,
then just go back to the lawn and grab a patch.
Happy Taping,
Rob

now see IMO, given the inconsistant state of things with P&F taping, ppl
running 8ft stands FOB, are only going to worsen the likelyhood of P&F
continuing to allow stands anywere.
i think anyone planning to use a stand FOB should live by the
beautifully worded quote the guy Nick sent earlier:
"It's all about staying low profile, even when it's allowed."

had a mic almost knocked off by a giant beach ball.
