This recent leg has had Phil co-headling with the Allman Brothers Band. The
ABB taping policy is "tape anywhere." I think this has led to confusion
with some venues allowing pavilion taping (based on the ABB policy) and some
lawn only (based on Phil).
Phil may really enforce his policy when he's the only headliner on the next
leg.

Subject: FS: various gear [ DA-20, Ecocharge Beta, M-Audio 2448 ]
Date: Sat, 6 Jul 2002 14:41:19 -0400
For sale:
Most of this I'm selling because I've moved to a laptop based recording
system, and have no further need of these items.
--Tascam DA-20, single owner, missing rackmount "ears", one owner [ ears
got missing last time I moved ], lots of hours[hundreds, I've never kept
an accurate count], but do have 5-yr warranty from Oade's with about 2
years left, which is also included. Gently, but frequently used [mostly
for Dat->Dat transfers or DAT-PC transfers] in a mostly smoke-free
environment [ my mom smoked in the house, but never in the same room ].
Heads in good shape, but you never know as always. Make a reasonable
offer.
--Ecocharge power packs[2] + charger for Tascam DA-P1. I believe this
was called the Beta system. It uses the 3-pin mini-xlr connectors. Also
included is of course the minixlr-to-DA-P1 power supply cable. In case
it comes up, I'm not offering to split this into parts. I've also used
the heck out of these, but almost always do full discharges of each
battery before recharging
--Delta/M-Audio/Midiman DiO 2448 PCI audio card. Purchased new @ Sonic
Sense, for about $100, make an offer. Works great, but I've got a laptop
on which I do transfers now, using the Digigram card, so I have no
further need of this. Driver cd included too.
These items can be purchased separately, but if someone wants all 3
items, I'll consider a bundle deal.
I'm not auctioning these right now, but if no reasonable offers are
received you may see these on ebay later. Get them while you can make a
reasonable offer! Shipping will be via UPS 3rd day select with
insurance[ I think my office has a sweet deal with UPS on these, so I
can probably make shipping pretty cheap. ], and items will be packed
securely and safely.
I look forward to hearing from you about any reasonable offer on
these[to see what's reasonable, first check the retail price, then use
that as a guide based on use]. PLEASE phrase your responses with the
subject line : "DAT-Gear purchase offer", as I do filter my mail.
Thanks for the reading.

I'm looking to sell some of my gear so that I can buy of course, more gear.
Tascam DA-P1: has under easily 20 hrs of recording on it. I bought it about 6
months ago and never really used it except for making couple clones. I never
use DDS tapes or anything over 2 hrs (HHB/Quantegy and BASF audio tapes
only). I planned on using it for phantom power but ended up selling the mics
(Octava MC-012-01 cardiods) but sold them before I used them with it. It has
never been used for field recording and has been kept in a smoke free
environment. I have the original box/power supply/shoulder strap/battery
(still sealed) and manual. Cosmetically it has a very light scratch (not
into) more like a smudge on the plastic led window. I'm looking to get $1000
obo for this. And prefer COD delivery, I will cover shipping charges for the
US only.
Sony PCM-M1: purchased about a year ago, it mysteriously kept switching
in-between recording freq 48/44.1/32hz for no apparent reason, I think the
selector switch may have been faulty. I never use DDS tapes or anything over
2 hrs (HHB/Quantegy and BASF audio tapes only). My guess is that it has
around 70-80 hours of recording time on it. The unit is in good condition and
has never been dropped or abused. It comes with the original power supply and
the soft cover that came with it from Sony. For this I'm asking $600 OBO also
by COD. I will cover shipping in the US only.
I'm looking to buy a Sonosax SX-M2 pre and/or Schoeps CCM4 or Neuman SKM140's
and would entertain a trade +/- cash for these items.
Email me at tapentrade@aol.com if you are interested.
thanks, Mike

recording a flute & harp duo next week for a CD of wedding music. It

Soundeluxe U195
Royer R121
Great River 4 channel pre

Subject: taping phil
Date: Sat, 6 Jul 2002 23:06:40 -0400
The shows that you guys have been talking about were shows with THE ALLMAN
BOTHERS BAND (ABB)
ABB's taping policy is to allow tapers to TAPE FROM YOUR SEAT.
It's totally AWESOME that ABB's policy seems to be winning out at these
venues where they are sharing the bill w/ Phil!!
Especially, after every GDTSTOO mail order announcement said that "taping
will be from the lawn".
However, the original post that I responded to was regarding taping Phil.
It made NO mention of Phil shows w/ ABB.
I have traveled across this great country to see Phil in a multitude of
venues and I have I have seen numerous FOB rigs get shut down. Argue all you
want. Flame me all you want.
Experience is the best teacher!
How about the jerks at the 420 show last year that showed up late and
insisted on hoisting their FOB rigs to the rafters??
They did so even after the only 2 FOB tapers that were keeping a low profile
offered them patches and even after the very same low profile FOB tapers
politely urged the hoisters not to raise their mics so high. The low profile
guys had made it through the first set w/ no problem. Then these jerks come
on up front and insisted on flagrantly hoisting away. The low profile guys
told them that this was not the taper section and such actions would get
them ALL shut down. The jerks ignored them and hoisted away. The second set
starts and Phil's crew comes down and not only pops the jerks, but the other
low profile guys that were doing fine before.
There are many more stories just like this.
The fact that the taper section for the previous show was in the back row of
the balcony did not help matters. I am not defending Phil's crew by any
means. There are other bands who have engineers etc. that are MUCH MUCH MUCH
more pro taper than Phil's crew or Bobby's crew. It's not Phil, it's the
crew. Many times, tapers are an afterthought and we get put in the worst
place possible.
Taping from the lawn sucks!!
If Phish and/or Trey can give us a section behind the SBD at the shed's, why
can't GDTSTOO or Phil's crew???????
I am w/ the fellow that said to keep a low profile.
Say you just drove 8 hours to begin a 3 show run of Phil shows from city to
city. Say you worked quite a bit to get good FOB seats and have ALOT of
money invested in tickets, not to mention all the expenses that go along.
Say you plan on respecting the band's policy as much as possible and your
mics will be in the hat. If someone else at any of these shows is able to
get away using a Mini Bogen w/ some actives at head level and not get
popped - you might try that too....
But you are not going to strut on in your 12' stand and hoist away, RIGHT??
If some other idiot shows up next to you and hoists away and you get busted
as a result, even though you are in stealth mode - you will be pissed!
RIGHT??
Any one of you that had gone to such lengths to get a good FOB recording
while doing your best to respect the band's policies and all the audience
members around you - would feel the same way.
So all I am saying is keep a low profile and respect Phil's crew and the
venue's security team.
Carelessly hoisting your rig FOB when it's obviously not authorized is a
defiant act.
While your at, it fire up a big old phattie and see how many minutes you can
record before there's a flashlight in your eyes and/or a hand on your
shoulder.
Don't be a jerk and spoil it for others.
Like I said before - Consideration goes a long way!
A little common sense never hurts either.
Peace,
D

Subject: Any experts here on Pro H.D. Recorders with CDR
Date: Sat, 06 Jul 2002 21:57:58 -0600
Hi,
I'm hoping someone on the list might be expert on
the new category of Pro Audio Hard Drive Recorders with a CDR drive in them.
There is one from Samson or Zoom that is about $1,000.
It's got several inputs for guitar, mic, etc.
But I really just want to dump cassettes and other analog audio to the H.D.
and edit and burn a CDR using the unit.
At this price point are there many brands / models to pick from?
I know there is the Alesis Masterlink and a consumer Yahama unit.
Both have hard drives inside and work a bit like a minidisc recorder for
editing.
I'm not sure how complex any of them are to use.
Appreciate your help.
If you have any opinions could you email me.
Thanks, Mark
