Subject: Why the external preamp & a/d converters??
Date: Mon, 8 Jul 2002 17:42:43 -0700
Hey everyone!!
I just returned from High Sierra (whew!) and did *much* taping with my MBHO
603's > Tascam DA-P1.
I just finally put my first rig together this May and would have also added
a preamp and a/d converter if I wasn't kinda waiting to see if the Mini-Me
is all it seems to be...
So, after listening to some of the MBHO > DA-P1 stuff from this weekend I'm
wondering what I'm hearing that would be better if I had an external preamp
and a/d converter??
In other words, why don't people just run directly into the DA-P1??
Not that I'm stupid or trolling or that the recordings I made were magically
wonderful, but I just want to be sure I understand just why I'm buying the
external preamp and a/d converter (and that I'm not just buying spendy boxes
for the heck of it yet again ;-)
-Jackson

Subject: why we trade on DAT instead of CD....
Date: Mon, 8 Jul 2002 22:17:58 -0400
why we trade on DAT instead of CD....
standard argument:
1) Without going into telling (email me offlist if ya really wanna know...)
you how your DAT recorder and your CD burner both work, the higher sampling
rate of DAT produces a better, more accurate recording. With some
individuals and/or under certain conditions, the difference in sampling rate
*may* be audible, but this is subjective. Some of us just like to trade in
48khz, simply because we like to use the format which will give us the Best
Quality. (Note that being conveinent does not enter into our decision to
trade in 48khz as much as possible.)
2) There is only one straightforward way to make a DAT>DAT copy....you hook
the digital output of one deck into the digital input of another....no real
way to Screw It Up. There are many different ways to copy a CD, not all of
them are bit perfect, and not everyone trading on CD's really cares....it is
MUCH harder to ascertain that a CD's lineage is bit perfect, especially when
lineage information is not usually even bothered with among most of those
asking for CD trades. Another lineage problem with CD's is how good the
quality of the DAT>CD transfer was. Resampling inherently causes
inaccuracies in the recording by definition, and trading in the Original
Mastering Format eliminates this source of inaccuracies entirely.
3) The running time for a DAT tape is 2 or 3 hours, versus 80minutes for
CD.....some of us would rather have the most realistically accurate
representation of a sonic event lasting longer than 80 minutes, I'll do
without the edits and switching discs, thank you.....
standard rant:
I also get lot of CD's foisted upon me in trades, as well as the numerous
"can you send it on CD" requests.....this problem has delayed postings of
more uncirculated masters, due to a similar policy of getting the music into
the hands of those who ask for it and not turning anyone down. For those of
us who do not have much if any CD equipment (the ONLY CD player I have is
one on my computer, which is an old 486 machine that cannot handle any other
audio functions other than an analog playback of said CD) at all, converting
to DAT and making CD copies presents something of a problem. This is
usually why we say NO CD's in our postings, not because we want to turn
anybody down. But yet you always get how many requests for the recording on
CD when the responses to a post roll in. Yet on the other side of the coin,
there are people I trade with who I eagerly bend over backwards for, because
CD's are the only digital format they can transfer their 25-30 year old
analog masters to. And how about those who post something nice and crispy
to the list....on CD only? Lame.... Oh yeah, I'll accept those things in
trade, but if someone is clueless about the need for bit-perfect copies
and/or accurate resampling, then I try to trade 'em for videotapes instead,
'cause it's easier to copy a videotape than a CD without Screwing It Up.....
Thanks for yet another posting,
john e. bogus
PS- A couple replies to things posted on the list a while back:
1) Cheap Hardcase Options- Mine says "Samsonite", and has held up fine
since about 1987....probably the best $3 I've ever spent at a Goodwill or
similar thrift store. The other small hardcase that fits inside it was
picked out of a trashpile around 1988 if I remember correctly.....it's
unbranded, but I can still stand on it and it dosen't collapse.
2) Jon Spencer Does NOT Allow Taping- I asked for permission (could only
drag a fullsize deck in, my portable was broken) to record a show in 2/94
and was turned down in no uncertain terms....Jon Spencer's attitude on
taping is very similar to one Robert Fripp....great shows and well worth
taping, but ya gotta stealth.....

My dat deck scares me way to much, so I need to buy a new one.
The current d7 has been loading funny, sometimes works fine, but recently
acted so wierd at the last 2 shows I've used it for that I don't trust it.
I am looking to buy a new/used dat deck, preferably a d8/m1/100.
If used, one owner, bought new and babied. I am hoping someone
on this list may be able to offer a sale up to me.
The current one is going on ebay maybe tonight with no guarantees.
I will explain the full set of problems and maybe somebody will
fix it up.
I think I have a loaner dat for a week or so coming to me.
9 shows in 13 days coming up, I just couldn't trust this deck anymore.
So if you can help me out email me. Thanks

Subject: DAT to imac?
Date: Tue, 09 Jul 2002 15:29:31 +1000
Dear DATheads,
What is the most efficient way of transfering the signal in digital format
from a Sony TCD-D3 DAT recorder to an imac computer (using Cubasis) - do I
need a sound card (I have had conflicting reports on whether there is even a
PCI slot on the imac (mine is the last of the old shape)) or can I somehow
send a digital signal into the USB port via the 7-pin digital output on the
side of the DAT. What is the setup that will give me the best quality - is
this possible at reasonable cost?
many thanks,
Daniel.

Is there a program out there that would allow me to play wav files on my

and I'm tired of highlighting a section of the wav, adjusting the EQ, then
playing it back - only to find out I need more bass, treble, ect....Anyone
have any better solutions ???

Hello,
I dug this classic out of the DAT stacks and transferred it to CDR. Now
I'm wondering how close to the best master mine is. The beginning of
"Antelope" has a volume surge, and an edit glitch in it. Also there are
diginoise bursts in two places on the tape. Is there anyone who can offer
a definitive "tape defect" description of this Phish classic?
Thanks, and perhaps I should just put this one to rest in favor of a
pristine transfer from the master from elsewhere.

Edit Pro but I don't have any of the manuals. Is there
anywhere on the internet where I can find a guide to using
all of the features? I've played around a little bit and
have learned a few things, but I'm having trouble with
multi-tracking and even synching two or more different
audio sources. If you can point me in the right direction
(or even help me yourself), I would appreciate it so much,
