Date: Tue, 09 Jul 2002 22:27:57 -0700 The only drawbacks to that seem to be financial, and that comes up to huge diffferences in money. A good CD duplicating setup, actually what I would consider the Rolls Royce of equipment, can be easily gotten for $400. My little rolls Royce system, which consists of a Plextor SCSI Burner and ROM, along with a high end Adaptec scsi card, has burned over 3,000 CD's and is plugging away quite nicely. I think by the time I recorded 1,000 DAT's, I would probably have incurred some serious maintence by now. It doesn't change the eq of your file, but if you just want to hear the changes as you fiddle with the sliders it should do just fine. Then you will still need to make those changes in CoolEdit 96 again to make them permanent. CoolEdit 2000 lets you preview and tweak your settings while you listen. If you really own the 96 version, I think there may be an upgrade deal from Syntrillium that could save you a few bucks. This only holds true provided the DAT machine manufacturers don't cut corners by using the same low-pass anti-aliasing filter for both 44.1 and 48kHz modes. I've seen claims that this penny-pinching took place in some models, in which case the playback should sound the same, independent of the sampling rate. Maybe an enquiring mind would care to lay this urban legend to rest by running tests on a few DAT machines: Let's see...perhaps using Cool Edit to generate, with 48kHz sampling, short segments of 19-, 21- and 23kHz sine waves; transferring via DA-AD to a 48kHz DAT machine; fetching the tones back into the pc via s/pdif, to check how the sines have survived the round trip? Is this experiment flawed? I would try it myself but I'm now getting paranoid about the low pass capabilities of my soundcard .
