Date: Thu, 11 Jul 2002 10:18:24 -0700
For those without time to read this whole post ===>> TAPING IS ALLOWED for
all 4 bands!
Well folks, last night was the opening night of the Fasthorse Summer
Hootenanny tour with Cedell Davis, Tuatara, Minus Five, & The Wayward
Shaman. They played the Crocodile here in Seattle to a crowd of about
200(?).
Here's a little info about last night...(if anyone was there, feel free to
reply with names of the other musicians)
The Wayward Shaman opened up at about 10PM. They are described officially
as "AfroCuban Experimentalists". I'm not really sure if they lived up to
that description, but they were definitely pretty hot! Great sax and
trumpet out front with the tribal beats behind them...Very similar sound to
Tuatara and a killer opener for sure! Wayward Shamen inclues Barrett Martin
(drums - Screaming Trees, Tuatara) and Joe Cripps (percussion) and they
were joined by a bass player, sax and trumpet player.
Minus Five was 2nd on the slot. They are described officially as "Pop
Deconstruction". I'd have to say that's a pretty close description. This
is a Peter Buck (REM) side-project that has a powerpop-rockabily edge. Good
stuff, but not nearly as fun as Wayward Shamen.
Tuatara was 3rd on the bill. Tuatara was together without Skerik....actually
most of the line-up was different from the new cd...but don't let that hold
you back from going! Tuatara quickly transitioned from Minus Five and
included members of Wayward Shamen and Minus Five. I think they played
almost all of the new cd!
74 year old Delta Blues Legend Cedell Davis closed the night. This guy is
the Delta Blues "REAL DEAL". Having been crippled by polio, he had to
re-learn to play the guitar. Polio left him in a wheel chair and with
limited use of his right hand. He was right handed and had to re-learn to
play the guitar left handed! He plays slide guitar with a kitchen knife (or
spoon like last night) and is amazing to watch. Cedell's set started with
himself and a 2nd guitarist along with Tuatara's bass player and drummer and
then was joined by Peter Buck and the Tuatara keyboardist.
ALL 4 BANDS ALLOW TAPING, but unfortunately the show was short of tapers. I
recorded, but without a mic stand so the crowd is very present at a few
spots in the recording. The entire night fit on a DG90 with 47 seconds to
spare!
Have at it...go out and catch this tour and record if you can!

Yo La Tengo is playing this Friday, July 12 in Brooklyn, NY at the Prospect
Park Bandshell. Opener at 7:30, ylt at 9 pm. Also, James McNew's solo
project Dump is playing Wednesday, July 17th, also in Brooklyn, NY at the
Southpaw, which is supposed to be a snazzy new joint. Comedian Todd Barry
opens.
I'd really love to trade for recordings of either/both of these, including
Todd Barry's set. While we're on the subject of YLT, I'd love to trade for
any YLT, my list is at http://www.sunsquashed.com. I've got plenty of dat
clones to trade, and a few masters. Tons of other stuff as well.
thanks,

? i don't think it's supposed to come off...remember, its a lighting
stand, so it's set up to accomodate lighting clamps and such...
bogen makes a *lot* of adaptors that attach to the stud in various ways
so that you can attach other stuff (like cameras or microphones) in turn.
my favorite is the 'quick release adapter' that slips over the brass stud
and clamps down tightly. with enough padded carrying space, you can have
your mics already mounted on a t-bar, ready to throw onto the stand and
wire up at a moments notice...
check out http://www.bogenphoto.com for info about their products.
the site is poorly organized though, so be prepared to look for awhile...
(sure would be handy if they had a pdf catalog you could download and
then browse through, like schoeps does...).
i found most of my stand stuff by browsing the pro section at Keeble &
Shuchat in Palo Alto, CA. Unfortunately, they seem to have cut down on
what's available since they last reorganized things...
Any good pro photo store ought to be a good place to start looking...

Dave has been super cooperative in the past, including allowing board access
if the venue allows. When I asked him about it a couple years ago, he said
something along the lines of "Allow taping? Hell, I encourage it!"

Help Wanted ----
August 18th in New York City I am trying to arrange a "high-end"
single point stereo mic test. I currently own a Crown SASS-P
stereo
"dummy head" type mic and am working to rent a Soundfield ST-250
and
a Royer SF-12. The support I would need is to arrange three
identical pre-amps and A/D's to provide an identical signal path
for
an accurate comparison. I would like to get others involved to run
their equipment. The optimum set-up I believe would be (3) V2's
and
(3) AD1000's but if we can't make that happen I'd hope we could at
least find (3) V2's and (3) M1's. The Lunatec V2 is almost a
requirement due to the low output of the SF-12 ribbon mic. The
Soundfield would be run in Blumlein stereo configuration. The
venue
is Joe's Pub (an upscale seated venue part of the Public Theater).
I can get a table just in front of the stage that we can set up
all
the rigs on and not have anything to worry about. I have the
stand
and clamps for the mics. The performer is Glen Phillips former
lead
for Toad the Wet Sprocket, the show is solo acoustic. The ticket
prices are expected to be $20.00 if this is an issue for anyone I
will pay for the ticket. The single point stereo mic issue is one
discussed quite frequently here so a nice comparison tape would be
an asset to the community. I know I would appreciate one to help
with future purchase considerations. Also if anyone in the NYC
area
has one of these mics and is willing to come to tape I would
gladly
pay for a ticket, dinner and blanks and it would still save me
over
rental costs!!
I have a previous recording of Glen Phillips at the same venue
that I
recorded with DPA 4060's A-B Config 24" spread -> SBM-1(Line In) -
>
D7 (same location right in front of stage) incase any one would
like
to hear what Glen sounds like. I will B+P unlimited copies of
that
show dated 2-24-02. Mp3 samples are posted at
http://briefcase.yahoo.com/lissa0000
Thanks for the bandwidth and hopefully future assistance!!!!
Peace,
Chris
P.S. Any suggestions, tips, etc. on this topic are greatly
appreciated.

Subject: RiSiNG: seeking Springsteen tapers and taper-helpers
Date: Thu, 11 Jul 2002 19:32:15 -0400 (EDT)
Greetings all!
Springsteen dates were announced yesterday, apparently with the floor as
general admission ala U2, so I'm trying to organize tapers and
"taper-helpers" to stand around tapers and create a radius of silence.
I've never tried to organize such a thing before, and don't know how well
it'll work, but it seems worth a shot. If we can get a taper with a
mid to high-end rig in the sweet spot of the floor with enough people
around him or her to eliminate immediate crowd noise, we should be able to
get some great recordings circulating.
Anyone interested in the project can check out
http://corrupt.net/~scrub/RiSiNG.html I welcome any thoughts, comments,
and suggestions, and of course would love to hear from any tapers who are
going to be attending shows.
Thanks!

Hi all,
What do people use to record WAV's from DATs and then splitting the big
file into tracks when running Linux? I just changed my computer over to
Linux based on my little brother's promise that I could do everything I
did in Windows. I'm not particularly computer-adept, so I'm trying to
avoid the method by which I have to make files of all the track offsets,
but I'll do that if I have to. I was using CDWAV to record and split
tracks in Windows and I'd love something similarly easy to use if
possible. Thanks for any suggestions!
