Beck is launching a solo acoustic tour in early August and I'm wondering if anyone knows of his current taping policy. I can't seem to find any info on his newly updated website (beck.com) and am hoping somebody has had semi-recent experience. Thanks in advance.... From: Nick Georges <nick@nickspicks.com> Subject: re: single point stereo mics Date: Fri, 12 Jul 2002 09:58:51 -0400 Hey now.... I have the demo disc that Royer will offer for interested SF-12 shoppers. you should get it (just ask for it ...they will send it right away). Im pretty familiar with ST-250, I have a number of friends who own or have used one extensively in the past. No comparison. The Soundfield is waaaayyyy more versatile. You 'wouldn't want to take an HQ ribbon mic like the Royer out for field use any way. One strong gust of wind could break it. Those ribbons are very sensitive. Royer tried to downplay my fears there though. I was going to buy one this past winter so I was talking w/them quite a bit. In the studio, that thing sounds soooo smooth though. Very detailed and warm sounding mic. I would think that smokey bars wouldn't' be good for either of them as well. A couple of other mics to think about might be the neumann sm69 / sm23 or any of the AKG stereo mic family, c24, c34, c422, c424, c426. I have a c422, and its' the best mic I've ever owned/used..hands down. The ST-250 was my target...but I got a good deal on my AKG and I really like it. The Neumanns/AKGs and Soundfield all offer an external box for controlling the polar patterns of the capsules independently (neumann usm69 has selectable switches on the mic itself) To criticize the ST-250, I think it's a little brittle sounding in the high end..but it depends on what you are recording. check out any of the ample GD recordings from 1993 that Jamie Young/Clay Brennecke/Ron Kaiser made. You'll see what I mean. They never ran it through a quality preamp though (that i'm aware of) for any of those shows that year....plus the dead has a strange sound going on that year..the mic seemed to eat up the strangeness, which I hear as a harsh high-end. However...it's an amazing mic. Ron has been doing a lot of stage taping (steve kimock) with his and those are just amazing recordings. The sense of depth/imagery is outstanding...second to none. As it should be for $3800 The AKG and Neumanns can probably be had used for less than $2k and are just as versitile...but do not have the 4 capsule array that the soundfield has. IMO, the soundfield is *THE* stereo mic. It's pretty damn impressive microphone technology. But...the AKGs ...they have cool little lights on them! Now that's gatta be worth something. ;-)

From: "Robert Gervais" <bgervais@texas-city-tx.org> Subject: Ian Moore tour dates and taping policy Date: Fri, 12 Jul 2002 11:19:34 -0500 For those interested in Texas guitarist/songwriter Ian Moore, please find some tour dates below you can catch him at. Ian is cool with taping. His former manager, Jan, was not. He allows the fan club to tape- the shows end up as mp3s on the fan club site: www.mooremusic.net. Check it out!! If you want to tape, send an email in advance to me or Mike Fulton, the webmeister, and we can see about trying to get you permission and possibly board access. If you can catch Chris Dye, Ian's road manager, tell him you have hooked up with us and you will send a copy to us for www.mooremusic.net, and Chris will probably be very accomodating. He is really cool. Good luck and we are always looking for Ian Moore tapes we don't have! From: DAVEDARC@aol.com Subject: Soundcard question Date: Fri, 12 Jul 2002 12:29:51 EDT Soundcard question. I am looking at the M-Audio Delta Series Audiophile 2496. It has been recommended to me by someone that has it. The advantages are that it does not resample, and that you can do "true" 24 bit and up to 96Khz recording/sampling. Digital in for the DAT and digi out as well. Also analog in/out and midi hookups. The downside is that the cdrom does not have a hookup into the card, so anything played on it will not be heard. Anything on the HD can be heard though. Do you see this as a problem. I don't but is there a better card I should be getting do you think? Please respond to me offline at thermco@lisco.com Thanks, Jim
From: cook@eklektix.com Subject: re: DAT>WAV and track splitting in Linux? Date: Fri, 12 Jul 2002 11:05:50 -0600 Yossi Pollak asks: >What do people use to record WAV's from DATs and then splitting the big >file into tracks when running Linux? I use a nice (free) package called Broadcast 2000, which is a video editing system with a decent graphical audio editing sub-section. It was available at http://heroinewarrior.com/bcast2000.php3, but it looks like it has been replaced by Cinerella. The original code can be still found here: http://www.brouhaha.com/~eric/broadcast2000/ Here's a quick description of my Linux audio setup, some day I hope to write this up in more detail: Hardware: Pentium 266 (slow) box with Red Hat 7.0 15GB disk for audio files (more space would be nice) DDS2 (data) DAT drive for backing up wav files, this isn't compatible with audio DAT tapes. Zoltrix Nightengale spd/if UART card DSD box for removing SCMS and converting spd/if coaxial to optical SCSI CD burner (Yamaha) Flying Cow A/D, D/A to spd/if box Software Alsa sound driver to talk to the Zoltrix card for recording I use either Broadcast 2000 or a simple utility recorder called sound-recorder. I use sox for conversion of 48K to 44.1K I use ecasound for doing stereo normalization on the tracks, that bumps both the right and left channels up to 100% amplitude. cdparanoia can 'rip' CDs to the hard drive, cdrdao is used to write CDs. I have put together a tar file (binaud.tar) with all of my utility audio scripts, it's available here: http://www.solorb.com/software/ I use this system for: transferring 48K and 44.1K DAT tapes to CDr copying CDr to CDr (not copyrighted material) re-editing and volume normalizing badly recorded CDs transferring reel tapes and cassettes to CDr mixing down spd/if audio from a digital multitrack porta-studio Since it's all open-source software, there are no licensing fees, and you can be assured that it is: bits in == bits out. I wouldn't recommend this kind of setup for people who don't enjoy doing serious technical work on their computers. To get a running system, you need to be able to install an operating system, configure and compile the Linux kernel, and work with hardware. Forrest Cook cook@lwn.net http://eklektix.com/gfc/ WB0RIO

Almost identical to mine. Some differences: Slackware Linux 8.0 (I've been a slackware user for close to a decade) 450Mhz PII DIO CMI 2448 (same chip as Zoltrix) CO2 for optical <-> coax Stock kernel driver for CMI (alsa's is nice too, but the stock driver is easier to hack) Sony SDT9000 w/audio firmware 100% SCSI I just recently discovered Broadcast 2000 and I'm very impressed. A freeware linux program that rivals Cool Edit or Soundforge in its capabilities. It also has video capture/edit capabilities, but I've never messed with that. I still use Xwave to track out DAT's for CD conversion. I keep the whole file from the DAT as a raw PCM file since I still mainly do DAT to DAT. For CD's I use cdrdao's non-destructive editing features to burn several CD's from that single file. [SNIP] -- Wayne D. Hoxsie Jr. KG9ME wayne@hoxnet.com http://www.hoxnet.com PGP Key ID 138BCEE1

I have researched some of the older digests and find the several systems mentioned [Edirol UA-1D, Ego Sys Waveterminal U2A as an example]. What is the recommended system to use. From: Steve Gilbert <gilbert@cs.utk.edu> Subject: ISO digital soundcard advice Reply-to: gilbert@cs.utk.edu Date: Fri, 12 Jul 2002 15:36:46 -0400 Apologies for asking what I'm sure is a very frequently asked question, but I don't read DAT-heads as regularly as I used to. I'm in the market for a new digital soundcard for my home PC, and was wondering if anyone could offer any advice on what the good ones currently are. What I'm primarily interested in doing is reading in my 48k DATs to hard drive with no resampling. I don't use CDs at all, so burning CDs or cutting down to 44.1 is not something I care about. I just need to do 48k back and forth between hard drive and DAT. I would also like to have 24-bit/96k capability, as I hope to start recording in this format soon. Thanks in advance! From: "Winnie Olmer" <who@sover.net> Subject: Nomad 3 does NOT drop samples?!?! Date: Fri, 12 Jul 2002 19:36:09 -0400 I've been speaking with people using the Nomad 3 at Phil & Friends shows. They say they have experienced NO dropouts after recording several shows. So what's the story? Do we believe the extensive review that has been referenced here at DATheads several times... or the many users at shows?? People who have direct experience... please chime in. While the Nomad 3 has some issues... no record levels, 44.1khz, 16bit, if it does not drop samples... then it is an alternative, or companion to DAT recording. Many DATheads have expressed their desire to get a Nomad 3 until the review came out and said it dropped samples. Indeed... I had one on order until I read the test results. (sorry... I dont remember the link to the guy who did the extensive tests, and currently.. I cant search DATheads... it's down or something) So... please... if other people have Nomad 3 experience using it for live recording as a DAT alternative... please let us know what your experience has been. thanx!! winnie =========================== "Without love in the dream it will never come true"-Garcia/Hunter Winnie Olmer mailto:who@sover.net CD Trades: www.sover.net/~who/trades.htm ===========================
