ok I digitally tranferred a concert into my computer, and
into Cool Edit Pro. I noticed that the levels were hot,
but there were some clipping spots. This is actually my
first digital conversion. I realize that I want to be
careful to leave the actual recording as it sounds and not
to alter it to much. but is there something I should do to
that clipping part, like "hard limiting" or something? I
also have Sound Forge. thanks a bunch! :)

Have you tried EAC with that burner? It works very well and it's free. Got
to www.exactaudiocopy.de and give it a try. It's also a high quality audio
extractor (if set up correctly, which is pretty easy in recent versions),
and wav editor. The interface takes a little getting used to, but it works
very well. I think it's the best value in audio software besides stealing
something fancier.
Matt (if you do trade audio CD-Rs, for the love of God, at least use EAC to
make them!)

Tascam DA-P1: This unit was purchased new in early 2002. Since then, not
much has been done with it. I've cloned maybe 5 dats with it an. I'm
selling this unit simply because I don't use it enough and would rather
invest in a piece of gear that will see more use. I have all the
documentation, box, and extra's that came with the unit and guarantee this
unit to be in perfect working condition. $1025 gets this unit shipped to

I am considering buying a Sony TCD-D3 with one ECM S220 stereo microphone.
Both have very limited use. Includes manuals for both pieces, AC power
cord, carrying case, and a brand new DAT tape still in its wrapping. Is this a
good deck? Is this a decent mic? Will I need to buy anything else for
this to be a useful field recording? And how much would this other stuff
cost? Sorry for the newbie questions. Thanks in advance for the help.

Another place to look for a small umbrella would be to look for a doll
umbrella. I did a little searching and it finally dawned on me that those
doll fanatics are strange people. They have to have *everything*. Anyway,
do a search in google for "doll umbrella" and see where it leads you.
One place I found is:
http://americandollclothes.com/products/doll_umbrella.htm
They have several different umbrellas to choose from, including a rather
fetching Winnie the Pooh leapfrog umbrella. It looks like all the
umbrellas are $10. They also have larger 30" umbrellas for children on
another page.
You might also want to try photography supplies to see if they have any
small umbrellas that are rain-proof.
Good luck.

Okay, with help from DRider [Hawkwind@attbi.com] and Greg Teltschik
[gteltschik@mindspring.com] I've found some stuff online that might fit the
bill:
For the clamp there are apparently two choices:
Graco Model 510901:
http://www.gracobaby.com/Sections/ProductCatalog/ModelDetail.asp?ProductCate
goryID=1&ProductModelTypeID=55
Click 'n Go Stroller Umbrella:
http://www.babysupermall.com/main/products/pri/pri06522.html
They both have roughly 24" umbrellas. But as DRider points out, the clamp
is the juicy part, you can always get a smaller umbrella.
Actually, I had a hard time finding a smaller umbrella until Greg sent me
the idea to look for doll umbrellas:
http://www.sweet-somethings.com/accessories.html
http://americandollclothes.com/products/doll_umbrella.htm
If anyone knows of another place to get a 12" umbrella I'd be delighted to
hear from them.
And as a final note, I don't know which is more disturbing, the baby
industry or the doll industry ;-)

Apologies for asking what I'm sure is a very frequently asked
question, but I don't read DAT-heads as regularly as I used to.
I'm in the market for a new digital soundcard for my home PC, and
was wondering if anyone could offer any advice on what the good ones
currently are.
What I'm primarily interested in doing is reading in my 48k DATs to
hard drive with no resampling. I don't use CDs at all, so burning
CDs or cutting down to 44.1 is not something I care about. I just
need to do 48k back and forth between hard drive and DAT.
I would also like to have 24-bit/96k capability, as I hope to start
recording in this format soon.
Thanks in advance!

Subject: Nomad Jukebox DOES drop samples!!
Date: Mon, 15 Jul 2002 10:48:05 -0700
Great -show me one person that actually _tested_ it for dropped samples by
recording two streams digi-in and inverting them, and I'd be amazed.
"Dood, it sounds good to me" is not an acceptable test method, IMHO. If so,
we'd all be using minidisks and mp3's
Let me reiterate that the places where samples were dropped led to quite
audible clicks, this isnt just technobabble.
I have one, I love it for playback, but the thing does not record from the
digi in without dropping samples. at least not in the current firmware
state.
If people want to record with it, so be it. I just hope they label their
recordings as such, so people who choose to keep flawless tapes can avoid
them.
one thing I need to clarify, 'dropped samples' is not the same as what we
call a 'dropout'
a 'dropout' is caused by the inability of error correction to read a tape
with very bad errors, and so the output is muted instead of playing the
stream of heinous digi noise. Certain decks do this (I beleive panasonic, as
sony and tascam decks tend to just put noise on)
'dropped samples' are when a stream is being recorded to a hard disk, and
the stream is interrupted briefly. Some bits are lost, and the result is
that when the strem resumes again, the wav is not in the same place, so you
have a steep slope to connect the sections of the wave before and after the
event. This steep slope creates a pop or click. Its the same thing that
people complain about when they get pops and clicks from their DAT>soundcard
transfers due to poor buffering, hardware conflicts, interrupts, etc. Its
also the same thing you hear with sector boundary errors, when a flat 'zero'
waveform is inserted into the otherwise continuous waveform. The steep
slopes at the end make the 'pop'
so if the tapers using the jukebox are basing the bit accuracy of the unit
by listening for dropouts, then the will come up with the erroneous
assumption that it is bit accurate.

Subject: About the Nomads
Date: Mon, 15 Jul 2002 11:46:12 -0700
i have seen several people asking about the Nomads on this list recently.
As someone who has had the misfortune to own/use these devices (both Nomad
JukeBox and the newer Nomad 3) let me state in no uncertain terms
*********************************************
the Nomads are NOT suited for Field Recording
*********************************************
these products were designed FIRST AND FOREMOST AS MP3 PLAYERS with large
storage..the recording features are afterthoughts
--even as a mp3 player the nomad is second rate (get an iPod)
the only applications i feel these devices are (marginally) suited for are
as
-mp3/wav (44.1k or 48k) playback
-BACKUP recorder for DAT deck in the field where you have line level input
and you are wanting some insurance
there are many technical reasons why the Nomads are deficient, but more
importantly they are a pain in the ass to use and not nearly reliable enough
i have never personally seen the "dropout" problem described by some others,
but
i have seen many other flakey behaviors (no real pattern to any of this)
-recordings just stop for no reason
-premature shutdowns of device (even with all power saving crippled)
-recording "lost" in filesystem
-recording not playable
some significant missing features on the nomad 3 in particular
-lack of a hold switch (the nomad jukebox had this actually)
----there is a soft hold function for playback, but it is not usuable when
you are recording
----add to this the fact that hitting nearly any key on the device takes you
out of record mode
----and you have a device which is not very stealthable
-lack of VUE meters
----sure you could use an AD-20/Inbox with one of the Nomad 3's and make
digital recordings,
----but where exactly would you know what levels you were running at?????
i encourage people to try the nomads out for themselves if they think it can
be a useful recorder, but i would make sure wherever you buy it has a
friendly return policy
instead of spending $700 on a nomad 3 and an inbox, buy a D8 or M1/D100, you
will get a far more reliable solution that should outperform the nomad every
application even with the A/D happening inside the DAT..or if you are
unwilling to spend the money for a DAT, get an MD recorder which will also
run circles around the nomad for recording applications (the lack of 48k
support on the MD is usually an non-issue as most people are recording for
44.1k playback)
plain and simple the Nomads just dont work all that well..check out their
newsgroups for the tales
of woe from others if you want more info
