Hey there, I'm copying this to the list in case others are interested. First thing is, I don't know for sure that the "cable" which comes from the CDROM is carrying digital or analog data, so it may be that even with the cable, you don't get the advantage of your card's higher quality d/a converter... I got a Prodif 24 card recently (yes, a bit old), and had a similar question about CD playback without the little CDROM cable. It turns out there is a free app called Exact Audio Copy, available here: http://www.exactaudiocopy.de/ which will take the digital output from a CDROM and send it internally (over the internal bus) to the digital sound card. I have not tested it exhaustively, but it seems to work, and seems to have lots of clever features. It is so far just a bit unstable as a CD player interface if you try to jump around between tracks during playback (I'm running Win98), but setting it up to play and leaving it alone seems to work quite well. If anyone else has experience with this app, I'd love to hear about it. Good luck. Mac >From: DAVEDARC@aol.com >Subject: Soundcard question >Date: Fri, 12 Jul 2002 12:29:51 EDT >Soundcard question. No cooledit, soundforge or winamp plugins for your 24bit enjoyment with this card. If anyone wants one, i'll sell you mine cheap. The auto0recognize feature did not work for me, I uninstalled Nero and ran 5.5, which recognized the drive on start up and would allow me to select it and burn to it.... hope that helps you... peace...kev >> From: "Bob Silver" >> Subject: Plextor 40/12/40 software burning issues? >> Date: Sun, 14 Jul 2002 17:02:17 -0400 >> >> I just hooked up my new Plextor (40x12x40) >> >> Got ready to burn the many B&P's, Donation Offers, and few Trades that I >> took in (That I have been behind on %^) >> >> And found that my new burner isn't burning when I use my old software >(Nero >> or Feurio) >> I know this is probably due to the fact that they are older programs and >> this burner is NT. >> But my problem lies in the fact that I can't afford to upgrade the burning >> software...and don't want to use the Roxio program...unless someone can >tell >> me if they have fixed it, or made it better! >> ------------------------------ From: "brian durham" Subject: extra cd's for trade (trey/phil/sci/other bonnaroo acts) Reply-To: durham_b@msn.com Date: Mon, 15 Jul 2002 16:13:04 -0400 hey now, i have the following extra cd's for trade (send lists): trey anastasio: 05-24-02 2cd's: schoeps cmc641v>lunatec v2>ad2k 06-20-02 3 cd's schoeps tubes (whole rig posted soon) phil & friends: 07-07-01 3 cd's official sbd release for download 06-23-02 2 cd's FOB B&K 4011>V2>AD2K+ string cheese incident: 04-18-98 2 cd's SBD Grateful Dead: 05-11-77 3 cd's sbd greyboy allstars: 10-22-95 2 cd's sbd seth yacavone band: 05-16-02 1 cd-source info soon umphrey's mcgee: 06-21-02 2 cd's AT-KPStudio Mics>Samson Mixpad4>M2-N707>SF 4.5 les claypool: 06-21-02 2 cd's FOB AT831>SP SB2>PCM-M1 ben harper: 06-22-02 2 cd's Schoeps MK4>rmod2K1>SBM (MOD)>M1 going where the climate suits my clothes, -bry cd-r list: http://db.etree.org/jadedphan _________________________________________________________________ Chat with friends online, try MSN Messenger: http://messenger.msn.com ------------------------------ From: jjjewett Subject: SCI darien lake request/favor Date: Mon, 15 Jul 2002 16:04:52 -0400 I have great fob seats for SCI at darien lake tomorrow. To day I found that one guy is selling the capsules on eBay. I am thinking about making a "poor man's taper rig" for myself and looked at the spec sheet on the Shure site and they say that it is a vocal cardioid mic with bass roll off begining at about 50 hz (can't remember exactly). Here are my questions. Are these mics good for live taping? Can I break the capsule compartment open make mods easily and use them with a mini disc recorder? I know that these are XLR capsules and I will have to add the required resistor to make them work with a mini plug Is the 50hz rolloff achived with inside capacitors or is it a characteristic of the mic element? The 50hz roll is too severe, IMHO. If the rollof is achived by capacitors I can take them out. Thanks in advance. Darren ------------------------------ From: Richard Hammond Subject: Digital audio OUTS on motherboards?? Any good?? Date: Mon, 15 Jul 2002 17:14:22 -0500 I'm not an expert when it comes to chipsets on motherboards... but several of the newer motherboards I have been looking at have digital (optical) outs on them. While I have a DAT drive for my computer to do extraction, I am interested in using the digital audio output function to either record from or pass to my stereo system to listen with from the computer. I am well aware of re-sampling issues on cards (SBLive series to name one), but I've only heard of those issues on input, never on output. Does anyone know anything about the current audio chipsets which provide digital audio outs, or where to find information on how well they do/don't work? I'm going to be building up a new system, and might as well make sure the board does what I want, the way I want it. Most of the documentation just lists "digital audio out" or "5.1 digital audio" which really means nothing as far as what it is doing to the stream it is passing. Thanks for the help... The chipset on the Soyo Dragon motherboard is the same as on the Zoltrix Nightingale sound card: no resampling. Seth ------------------------------ From: Mathias Rombach Subject: 48 KHz > 44.1 KHz Date: Tue, 16 Jul 2002 00:11:18 +0200 Hello, I donīt know anymore whether I wrote about this topic to you before, anyway ... As I know it from the electronic development there are some micro-chips that do the sample-rate-conversion. Most of these chips do all work with dithering and noise-shaping. Their design is very similiar and based on the Studer professional sample rate converter from the year 1982. If no dithering is applied to the process, you get nonlinear distortions and a certain amount of noise. If you have a very good headphone set you should hear that when the music is very silent. That is all from the theoretics of digital recording, I never tested this out. Donīt worry too much about that and have fun with the music. Mathias ------------------------------ From: Mathias Rombach Subject: Keneally Date: Tue, 16 Jul 2002 00:16:59 +0200 Hy Dave, interesting to read on the DAT-Heads something really interesting. I live near Freiburg and make many live recordings (2-track analog/digital, 16-track analog) at the Waldsee where Keneally performs on the 22th July. I met his manager there (Claude Kuhnen) and we talked about taping. Finally as I know they have somebody to tape there on 16-track digital. Perhaps I connect my machine to the SBD. Perhaps there is a recording from this event available in the future. I've always used one on my stereo at home, but never > >knew exactly what I was cutting out, and raising. > Hello, I think most DAT-Heads do not make EQ-ing with their recordings. I use it sometimes when making a rough-mix from my live recordings. A graphic-EQ is used for example when mastering a recording from the studio/live concert or when using a PA to give sound for a live concert. They work digital or analog. The whole frequency range (up to 20 KHz) is divided into 31 well-defined bands for each channel. Each band can be amplified from mostly -20 dB to +20 dB (that is 10 % to 1000 % of the original level of the signal). You have a fader for each band and each of the two channels. Hope this helps ... Hy, I donīt know. An advantage in using an external ad-converter may be the dithering process that should be built-in to the signal processing. SPDIF runs up to 24 bits of audio, the DA-P1 just truncates down to 16 bits. That should be the reason.
