I'm simply going to state the facts so that if any of you run into this person or think of trading with him you might think twice. I was contacted back in May of this year by a taper who wanted me to tape a show in Seattle for him. He offered to send me a show and said he would put me on the guest list. I told him that I needed to be sure that I'd be on the list since I had to drive 90 miles roundtrip to tape the show. He assured me that I would be on the list. That was the last honest thing that he told me. When I went to the venue I was on the list as promised. I arrived early so as to get the best chance to get a soundboard patch. I was one of the first people in. When I went back to the board I was surprised to see another taper already there with a lot of gear. 2 decks, a mixer, and a huge bag with all kinds of taper gear. She had been able to get in with the bands and was all set for a matrix. My only choice for a board recording was to patch from her which I did. I watched my levels and made sure that they were good. I didn't have headphones with me so my levels were all I had to go on. I went home and listened to the show. There were a few spots that were a little hot. The other taper had been getting too hot of a feed but I had no way to tell. Let me say right now that when I say that the feed was hot it was only hot in a FEW spots. Not a ruined recording by far. I sent the taper in question the DAT master. I told him what I had found and that I would get back to him on exact source info. I did so less than a week later. That is when the lying began. I didn't bug this guy. I gave him space. Remember...he's the one who contacted me. He's the one who offered to get me on the list AND send me a show off of his list of my choice. I didn't hit him up. Here's the copies of his e-mails he sent me: From : BillyCorgansBald@aol.com To : johnwil1@hotmail.com Subject : Re: tape a show Date : Sun, 19 May 2002 23:08:30 EDT OK. I still have to send your CD out, ive started a new job and have been tied up. Joe This was his response to whether or not he wanted the source info. I made no mention of the show I wanted in my e-mail. I simply asked if he wanted the source info. next:BillyCorgansBald@aol.com To : johnwil1@hotmail.com Subject : Re: tape a show Date : Tue, 18 Jun 2002 13:46:02 EDT It'll be out tomorrow. Take care. Joe note the date...I finally e-mailed him and told him that I wasn't in a hurry but wondered when I could expect the show he OFFERED me. That's the last I heard from him. You decide to tape for him/trade with him...do so at your own risk. He is a liar. You are a liar Joe. I was a man and did what I said that I would do. You didn't. I will remeber Joe. I will be there when and if you post again to warn others. I'm sorry to WASTE space but this guy lied to me and I thought I should warn others. The deck I was being offered was defective which in the end made me decide not to get it. However, I just bought a Sony DTC-57ES at Ebay Germany for $100, which I think was a good deal. Now, my question is this: how do I start trading tapes, since this is my first DAT deck ever and I do not have a portable recorder to start taping (which I plan to get for my birthday in September)??? What is the best way to get started building a library of tapes for somebody like me who is just getting started with DAT? Anybody from Germany or Europe who is willing to sell me some tapes to get started? If anyone is willing to do this, send me your lists and I will contact you directly off list to find out the best way to go about this. Any and all answers are more than welcome. Thanks a lot! Alejandro Montiel P.S: I am local to Munich/Germany in case it makes a difference. ;-) __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Any advice would be much appreciated. Obviously, recording with a cardioid rather than an omni mic would probably give you better results in this situation; they would pick up less of the audience, so the crowd would not spike your levels so much. If this is not an option, I would advise you to try using AGC (auto recording levels) in this situation. I know this goes against the gospel, but I would cite my experiences recording under these conditions with CSBs and an M1: 1. manually set levels based on the music, applause went way over and distorted horribly. 2. manually set levels and used the mic limiter, applause still went over and distorted but not quite as often. 3. manually set levels conservatively and used the limiter, tape came out okay but the levels for the music were lower than I'd like. The strongest peaks on the tape were the audience applause. 4. used AGC. Music levels were strong, yet applause _never_ went over. On the tape there is very occasionally a noticable "clamping" effect as the gain control kicked in which is slightly annoying, but much better than the alternative IMO. When dealing with this problem in existing tapes, I've found using a hard limiter works well...you boost the input by however many db to bring the music up, and the limiter automatically scales back the applause to keep it from going over. The result is a recording with more consistent and listenable levels, where the applause at the end of a song will not have you leaping for the volume knob. -Michael ------------------------------ From: Jason & Monique Riggs Subject: Fs: 2 tix- Terrapin Station, GD reunion Reply-To: mkwilson@iquest.net Date: Wed, 17 Jul 2002 12:31:03 -0500 Hey All, Well, I hate to do this but we can't go..... 2 tickets for each day @ Alpine Valley Aug 3rd & 4th.
