From: Charles Muccia <cvm900@yahoo.com> Subject: Rode NT5 Date: Thu, 18 Jul 2002 23:49:25 -0700 (PDT) Hey all, Just like to bring these great mics to the attention of those who might be looking for a good affordable starting point or even an upgrade for their tape rigs. I recently bought a set of RODE NT5's to use as my primary mics. They're $300 as a matched pair with clips, screens and case. I recently gave these mics their trial run at the High Sierra Music Festival and I was quite happy with the results, well worth the money. If anyone is looking to buy their first set of mics I would recommend these before the AKG c1000's,which I have also used. The NT5's are about the size of the KM184's and weigh about 100g each. Specs are 20 to 20k hz with a slight 10 dB roll off beginning at 12k hz,128 dB dynamic range, max SPL of 143 dB,78 dB s/n and cardioid pattern. From a user stand point I can't honestly compare them to Neumanns because I have never owned a set, they're a little out of my price range. I have owned the AKG c1000s and,IMHO,have been less than pleased with the results. But for one third the price of the Neumanns and a hundred less than what I paid for the AKG's,the RODE's are worth a serious look. Everyone's got to start somewhere,so it's always nice to get the most bang for your buck! Thought I would pass this on to anyone who might be considering a mic purchase in the near future. I can provide a copy of a show recorded with the NT5's if anyone is interested in what they sound like. The show is; Particle 7-6-02 High Sierra Music Fest NT5's > Rolls PB224 > D8 @ 44.1 > CD-R Hope this was helpful. Peace,Charles __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? From: Keith Bode <t.tunakebo@verizon.net> Subject: EAC Shortfall Date: Fri, 19 Jul 2002 01:36:37 -0700 As I was the one to make the original statement, that apparently has been discussed, and I didn't follow the thread, I stand by my original statement: If the program has a shortfall, it's the fact that it can't tell if the CD-ROM you are using is accurate or not, so the results are only as good as the hardware. A while back I was reading a study on the reults of DAE using EAC and different CD-ROMs. I wish I had copied that study, because I found it pretty startling, and also it would back up the claim. The study used 2 Plextor SCSI CD ROMs, a UW and a 50 pin. It also used various drives from other manufacturers. Using EAC in Secure Mode, the Plextor drives were able to perform the extaction of a given side of a CD with no errors. No other drive could do that. If the software sees the same error repeated, it won't see it as an error. it even checksout with matching Even though the report indicated that the number of bit errors reported was extrodinarily high in some cases >1 million, in no case were the errors audible. If this was not true, why would shn collectors clamor for SHN conversions made from the original transfer from DAT or Cassette? They believe that DAE is unreliable. It's not the DAE process with EAC which is used for virtually all extractions that creates the problemb but the variation between CD ROM's that leads to problems, and quality issues. Keith I really wish I had written down where I saw the study, Please check out http://www.wotwild.com for some great animal art and wall decorations.

They are usually 17" wide, so check the width of your componants first. Some are 19" which is perfect. Mike

From: Greg Gardner <gwg@well.com> Subject: Newbie Questions Date: Fri, 19 Jul 2002 13:15:54 -0700 (PDT) Sorry for the newbie questions. I am new to taping, so I don't know very much. I am starting graduate school next month, so I do not have very much money at all. However, I recently bought a D7 and a 7 pin Coax for connecting Sony portables. I also bought a mic with a standard mic cable. I think it was called XLR. What else to I need to have a rig capable of taping? I want to tape some live shows and also some quieter, normal talking tone situations. I can't afford a top-notch setup, but I'd like an affordable setup that will work. What is the minimum that I will need? Also, what else do I need to run a patch? I know I need some additional connectors and adapters, but I don't know what to look for or where to get it. Also someone told me I would need to know the differnce between active and passive cables and how to make them coexist. Can someone give me a brief intro on how to patch and what else I'll need? Thanks in advance for the help. I'm trying to patch at the Phil and Allman shows in Atlanta. If I can, I'll offer them up to the group as a BWT. By the way, is there anyone in this group who will be there? I'd love a patch. Thanks Greg
From: "Glyn" <glyn@who.net> Subject: Transferring DAT to PC to CD? Reply-To: <glyn@who.net> Date: Fri, 19 Jul 2002 21:57:40 +0100 I have a Casio DA-R100 portable DAT recorder and have a PC with Yamaha DS2416 DSP Factory soundcard (amongst others :-) and was wondering the best way (i.e.. highest possible quality transfer) to record this data to my PC. I was thinking of connecting the DA-R100 to the DSPF via a 75 Ohm stereo-jack->2 phono lead but was wondering what software you guys use to record/save with? I use Cubase VST 5.1 and also have Cakewalk Pro Audio 8 Deluxe but this seems unnecessarily complex to set up the software to use the DSPF and I was worried about ruining the recording with effects etc. I also have SoundForge XP 4.0 that came with an old SBLive card and it would seem that this might be a better way to record the DAT into - it will also convert sample rate from 48KHz to 44.1KHz so that I should be able to burn a CD to listen to in the car etc. Should I record in 16 bit, 24 bit or 32 bit for highest quality? I assume 16 bit would suffice as it is 16 bit in the first place! What/how do you guys carry out this task? Any other help/tips would be appreciated. Thanks & regards, -=Glyn=-

They allow taping, so long as the venue doesn't mind, you should be able to openly video and even get SBD patches. The Festival dates will have to be stealthed, but everything else can be openly taped, big rigs and all... For sound samples of the band to check them out, see http://www.barsuk.com/web.cgi?dcfc I've also got some live mp3's at my website http://www.dcfc-tour.net/ Thanks much!! -Andy PS: If anyone is on a UK specific tapers list, please post this to that list for me!
