Subject: AKG C1000s
Date: Tue, 23 Jul 2002 14:28:21 -0700
Having recently purchased a pair of C1000s', I tracked down some recordings
done with them to see what they were capable of. This fine seed is floating
around etree right now:
Phish
07-06-97
Spiaggia di Rivoltella, Desenzano (Brescia), Italy
Source: AKG C1000's
Transfer: DAT > TASCAM CD-RW 5000
...and it sounds GREAT. Reply if you'd like a b&p (wav or shn), or we can
trade...
Additionally, who ever said these were drum mics? The AKG website describes
them as so: Excellent vocal microphone works perfect even from a greater
distance, e.g. for picking up choirs and so on. Outstanding performance when
used for instruments. Ideal for home recording applications.
Oade.com:
The one inexpensive microphone that is at home in the studio, in the field
or on stage.
Sospubs.co.uk:
AKG's original C1000 was the first back-electret capacitor mic I ever owned,
and the difference it made to my recordings was both obvious and immediate.
Whereas dynamic mics always left my acoustic instruments sounding choked at
the high-frequency end, the C1000 produced a far more open, articulate
result -- but at the same time, the sound remained warm and musical. That
was a very long time ago and since then, the C1000 has undergone a number of
small design changes.
Later versions of the C1000 were designated the C1000S, largely because a
little plastic widget could be slipped over the capsule to change the polar
response from cardioid to super-cardioid. My own view is that while the
hypercardioid response may be better for live work, where spill can be a
major problem, the regular cardioid pattern may be more forgiving in the
studio, especially for vocal recording where the sound source has a tendency
to move.
Kraftmusic.com:
With a C1000 in your toolbox, you'll find you'll be able to pull it out for
all sorts of applications, including vocal miking, snare drums, hi-hats,
string instruments, and drum overhead miking. Rarely does one microphone
effectively serve so many needs.
...and so on. I urge you all to educate yourselves on this and other
matters and don't rely on uninformed opinions.

Hey all.
I had my house broken into about 2 days ago and my microphones were stolen.
Does anybody have some small (preferably stealth) mics that they can sell me
quickly?
FYI, I was using Core Sound Binaurals with the bass roll off box and I'd be
more than content to get another set of these....
Get in touch with me if you can. Thanks!

and i'm damn proud of it! sorry, i work for a living. i can't afford to
spend $3000 on a pair of mics. now, would it be cool to offer if i'm the
only taper at the show? or what if i'm using shure sm-11's to stealth? and i
have many damn good recordings made from the c-3000. i have some that don't
sound so good. i have many schoeps sources that freakin suck! the c-3000
have a larger margin for error than the schoeps. and, no offense, but most
people with the money to buy expensive mics, don't know how to run them, and
therefore end up with bad tapes. please do not tell me not to spread my
music. please do not tell me how to tape. if i had the money, i would be
running dpa 4011>v2>ad2k. but i don't. do you know how many people told me
just to bypass the adc-20 & run straight into the hhb? i'm surprised no one
said anything about this. so, now for my WOB b&p offer... i guess i can do
this, cause it's a schoeps source...
soulive - 6/21/02 bonnaroo, arena stage - cd only - 2cd's
source:schoeps 4v(aka not sh*tty
mics)>v2>ad2k>dap1>hhb830>eac>cooleditpro>cdr- i hard limited -3 db, and

just how bad are the c3000's,, i've used and heard countless tapes of the akg c1000's and have been very impressed with the quality considering the cost,, whenever i know someone wanting to put together an affordable simple setup to tape small shows they hit, i always suggest the c1000's, then again maybe the two mics have nothing to compare, still i'd never discourage offers, especially those providing the source

Hy,
c) Is there alteration of the signal and loss by going from 96Khz 24 bit
down to 48Khz 16 bit.
Yes, there is ...
96 K gives you the "higher" frequencies up to about 40 KHz. 24 Bit give
you an enhancend usuable dynamic range of more than 100 dB on analog
recordings, 16 Bit give you less than 96 dB.
BUT:
- When you record on a "normal" 16-Bit DAT tape it´s not worth to record
with 96 KHz, you can do it also with 48 KHz. I do not know any
microphone that has a range of more than about 25 KHz in frequency.
There are many amplifiers, sure ...
When the digital data is converted from 96 KHz to 48 KHz, two samples
(that are momentary values of the analog music signal) are calculated
together and so one "new" sample which is "similiar" to the other two is
recorded to tape. And the frequencies up to 22 KHz are still in that
signal.
- Using a AD-conversion with 24 bit makes sense:
An old 16-Bit AD-converter can not perform the whole dynamic range of
about 96 dB that are theoretically possible with 16 bit. That´s due to
its hardware-design.
A newer converter (20, 24 bit) has more "headroom" due to the higher
resolution
and as I know a better hardware-design and so on...
If that data is calculated down to 16 bit, you have the full 96 dB
dynamic range on the tape. And that makes really sense !
Why not to buy a 24-bit stand-alone harddisk recorder with a built-in
CD-burner ??
sorry for the long mail (;)) ...

Copying audio from a CD disc through the CDR drive on a computer,
whether using EAC or a "single-pass" program (such as CDRWIN), generally
produces an excellent copy of the data onto your hard drive. In cases
where there is a slight error, it is generally in the
least-significant-bit (ie, a sample of 12345 might change to 12346 or
12344), but these differences are not audible.
Playing a disc on a CD player through a digital output is simply another
method of "single-pass" reading of the disc, and unless you have an
extraordinary CD player, will probably produce results less exact than
reading the disc though the computer drive.
