Tall way or short should make no difference, whichever one allows you to read the labels without moving the tape is probably best. Some folks prefer tails out, I am not concerned about print-through due to the digital nature of the recordings. I store mine head out for convenience's sake. . . I do leave a good 2 minute leader at the head of tapes though, in case of a misload, it is more likely to be at the head, and only eat blank leader. -t PS- If you store them "tails-out" you know how long the program is as soon as the tape is loaded, and you can select the proper length blank to clone onto without fast-forwarding. Rob Asked: should DATs be stored like analog tapes, tails out? (i.e., don't rewind them after you play them?) does it matter? also, does it make a difference whether you stand the tape vertically up the tall way, w/ one reel above the other, or the short way, w/ both reels parallel to the surface? anyone have any experience or data on this? many thanks. rob. -- -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- ------------------------------ From: "craig davis" Subject: J. Mascis info Date: Sat, 27 Jul 2002 22:21:27 -0400 I traded with Richard Campbell from this list & got a May 2002 J. Mascis tape. I didn't save the original post & the tape didn't have the date, source or venue on it. Was wondering if anyone else has this show & can provide any of the missing info. Craig ------------------------------ From: Steve Marshall Subject: RE: Problems with Delta Dio 2496 Date: Sat, 27 Jul 2002 21:30:45 -0500 I've got a Delta DIO 2496 in an XP Pro box. I had problems with pops/clicks at first too, but it's working fine now. Change your DMA Buffer setting to 1024 & you should be fine... Reply-To: Date: Sat, 27 Jul 2002 22:58:12 -0400 Here's what I had to do to get the audio clicking and channel swapping to stop with my system during DAT transfers. Please let me know if you had luck with any other methods. My list could be overkill but as far as I can tell it does seem to work, or at least one the things I did worked. I've got a Win2K Pro based system that includes dual-800 MHz P3 CPUs, 500 MB RAM, ZA2 card, Asus AGP TNT2-based video card, and a Maxtor (OEM from Promise) ATA-133 card with an 80GB ATA-133 drive (not the boot drive). Some of the things listed below might work for you even if you don't have a system configured like mine. - Change video resolution to 640x480 with 256 colors (lowest possible setting) - Go to Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager > IDE/ATAPI Controllers. Turn off the DMA setting by clicking on the Primary controller choice, and clicking on the Advanced Setting tab. Do the same for the Secondary IDE controller. - If you're comfortable playing with the BIOS settings, see if changing the DMA options makes a difference (this didn't work for me but it might for you). - Bring up the Task Manager (Alt-Ctrl-Del) and click on processes (make sure no applications are running). End all of the processes that you possibly can. You'll be told when a process can't be shut down. If you crash the system, reboot and don't turn off the same process again. - Bring up the Control Panel and double-click on Administrative Tools. Click on Services and sort the list by Status. Turn off every service that you possibly can. You'll be told when a service can't be shut down. Some of the problematic applications like Antivirus apps running in the background or the Auto-Insert CD detection service that constantly checks to see if media has been inserted in your CD drive(s) (thus utilizing the I/O bus and potentially disrupting your DAT transfer) can be shut down here. - After making all the changes listed above, I can start the DAT transfer process. My setup is a Sony R500 > Shielded Coax SP/DIF > ZA2 > Sound Forge 6 or Cool Edit Pro. I try not to touch the system at all once the transfer process begins. I set the auto-timer during the recording in the audio software so that the recording process stops automatically after the DAT has completed playing. This way I don't have to touch the system to see if I need to stop the recording process from time to time. - Once all of the transfers are done, I reset all of the changes I made back to their normal settings and reboot. It sucks to have to do all this stuff, but the problems did go away and I didn't end up having to invest in more equipment. Hopefully some of the things I listed might help you out. Good luck! - Tim ------------------------------ From: "rush fan" Subject: RE: Stopping Clicking During DAT Transfers... Date: Sat, 27 Jul 2002 23:05:51 -0400 I actually spent quite a bit of time on the phone with Greg Hanssen a few years back trying to figure this out. It is actually a lot easier than all the stuff you posted. Turn off auto-insert notification on your CD and DVD drives. When the computer goes to check the drives it ties up the DMA for too long and causes these problems. I have two sections from Keller Williams' Thursday show where he must have pushed up the output slide on his mixer which resulted in some clipping. I normalized the first section to -12dB but the clipping remained. Is there anything to be done? Thanks in advance for your assistance.
