hi, if you've got any live material by any Refugee
Camp artists (fugees, lauryn hill, wyclef, pras) I'd
love to arrange a trade with you!
I've only got 2-14-99 and some assorted BBC
performances, but I'd really like to find entire sets
if they exist!
My list is available at the URL in my sig. Drop me a
line if you've got anything.

I hope to have sent this early enough, but can someone tell me about Yes'
set. Basically I am interested in the length of the show. Typically I pack
2 hour tapes but want to make sure that if I do I'll have enough time to
switch tapes.
Also, does anyone open? If so, who?
Thanks,
Jeff

i guess that could be *one* potential problem with getting a Zefiro Acoustic
ZA2 card to coexist nicely in a PC; i'm glad RT solved his problem so easily
:)
sorry for this long post but i need to try to explain this to Za2 users so
as not to give anyone the wrong impression about how EZ or difficult it may
be getting a Za2 to behave in your PC
you (the reader of this note) may or may not have difficulties getting a Za2
to work well in your own PC, and although the difficulties may be solveable
by simply following RT's advice above, you may instead find that alot of
work on your part may be needed to figure out the problems (like Tim), or
you may exhaust your options and find the card just will not work correctly
for you (like me)
after mucho time & research on my part & tinkering etc i gave up on getting
it to work right in my PC; i believe in the end it just didn't like my video
card or *something that i could NOT figure out*
after a bunch of config debugging/work i was able to get around all the
buffer overrun errors (thanks to greg hanssen & the Za2 discussion group),
but nothing solved the most dreaded channel swapping problems that i only
discovered by chance (& a discerning ear)
there used to be a ZA2 discussion group solely devoted to debugging/figuring
out how to get it to work right - my point being, it is not as simple as
what RT posted above...there are many complex things you *may* have to do to
get it to work solidly
i gave up & replaced my Za2 with an EGOSYSWAVETERMINAL2496...works smooth as
silk....i found that there were just too many PC issues with using an ISA
based card like the Za2, in my particular PC...that is not to say that there
is anything bad about the Za2 card...it is just that it CAN be one hell of a
monster-sized problem to get it to work right in some PCs
also for tim - and RT - and any Za2 users - i recommend strongly that you do
some serious checking to be *sure* that the Za2 is NOT channel
swapping....after transferring several DATs to my hard drive with *no
errors* & thinking the card was working well (after i fixed the buffer
overrun problems with a bunch of config steps like tim discussed), i
discovered to my horror that something wierd was up with my transfers :-(
while listening to a show that had very distinctive stereo channel
seperation, i noticed that at certain times the musician on the left side
was coming out the right channel and vice-a-versa...at first i thought i was
going crazy...then i thought there must be something wrong with my
tape...then i went back & listened to the tape & discovered that the
switchover was NOT on the tape....then i researched horror stories on the
Za2 forum and learned about "channel swapping"
then i did a simple test.....and about 50% of the time i had "channel
swapping"...try this:
- feed your Za2 input that ONLY has one channel, either right or left
- let it soak that up for awhile
- examine the waveform in an editor like cooledit2k & MAKE SURE that the
sound is ONLY on the proper channel
- if you see it "switch" from side to side, you have a channel swapping
problem (& one hell of a problem to debug)
- to be as safe as possible try the test multiple times under different
conditions..if everything is ok breath a sigh of relief
if you see channel swapping, try reading through all of the posts at
http://www.hollister.nu/david/za2 and you may learn enough from the
archives to pinpoint & solve your problems..or search the net, there may be
other forums out there for Za2 users that can help
all the best,
- jon -

Hello Chris,
> Just wondering if anyone here knew how to remove the "clipping" noise
from a
> waveform.
As I know there is no way to do that. The clipping is in the "original
signal" you got from the soundboard, I guess you didn´t set the levels
on your recorder too high.
The amplifiers in the soundboard were at the maximum level and clipped
the signal, all above the clipping limit is lost and can´t be restored.
And normalizing the level to -12 dB in Cool Edit also brings no fun, you
can set the level even to 0 dB and you have the clipping from the show.
You can do a certain filtering with the signal. Try to "kill" some
higher frequencies, let´s say above 8-10 kHz, because the clipping noise
-or call it "crackling"- consist of higher frequencies. That should
give you a little, but not much.
Correct me anybody when wrong about that please.
Mathias

Dolby NR does not work on specific "curves" as in
so-many-db-down-at-x-frequency. It is an encode-decode, amplitude- and
frequency-based system using the principle of least treatment. You might
want to study the information at:

Subject: 2 Channel SBD<-->AUD recording. Suggestions?
Date: Mon, 29 Jul 2002 15:00:59 -0500
Hello,
I just recorded a bluegrass festival for the fourth year running, down in
Strawberry Point, IA. Some good groups played. Anyway, my masters in the
past were simply two channels mono, both the same, straight off the old
Peavy soundboard's MAIN B output. This was a nice source and always gave
me a good tape, but this year I put the SBD into the right channel, and one
of my Sanken COS-11 mics into the other channel, immediately in front of
the soundboard postion, about 35 feet from the stage. Listening back to
the masters, I can make a pretty good mix using the pan control, just
bringing in a touch of the audience to give the SBD spaciousness, but not
enough to make it sound like outerspace delay-land. I'm going to commit a
'mix' of these masters to DAT, keeping a .shn mix of the SBD-R/AUD-L for
future mixing. Of course, a 3 channel DAT would have been perfect for this
project, then I'd simply pan the SBD to the center, and the two audience
channels at 3 and 0 o'clock, maybe time delaying the center channel to
align it with the two audience mics. What can I do with these two
simultaneous recordings to make a cool quasi-stereo recording? I'm
visualizing maybe making a second channel of audience by comb-filtering
adding a few ms of delay, the panning that hard left, panning the original
audience hard right, then putting the SBD in the center. What would YOU do
with these two channels of material from this show?

“Are you ready?” he asks, then points his invention directly at the head of
someone who’s just entered the room 10 feet away. “Now, can you hear it? Can
you hear it? Isn’t that unbelievable?” What the person across the room hears
is, well, unbelievable: all of a sudden, the sound of a waterfall has
materialized in his head. And, it turns out, no one else in the room can
hear it but him.
