Anyone out there have any of the July "Beatlejam" shows? I'd love to trade
for any that exist - have several other Beatlejam shows as well as a
boatload of the older Blue Floyd dates.
Please send me an e-mail if you are interested in trading. Thanks.

Ben, (and all)
All boards being different, it is hard to give a definitive answer on
what exact cable to always bring. I am usually successful with plugging
into the board with a female xlr connector. It can't hurt to also bring
rca>rca cables as many boards will offer an rca out. I have even been in a
situation where I have taken a 1/4" out from a soundboard. Long story
short, most often, I have used a female xlr and been successful, but bring
other cables as a backup plan. The board usually is not flexible, but you
can be. Be prepared...it's the best thing you can do.

Adapters are available to convert an xlr into the opposite gender. You
should be able to find them quite readily at your local Radio Shack or music
store (ala Sam Ash, Mars, etc...)

Subject: ISA Digi Soundcard Tweaking
Date: Tue, 30 Jul 2002 11:03:02 -0400
Hey all,
After catching up on the recent conversation about the ZA2 it sparked my
interested for the ISA Digi I/O soundcard that I own. It is a Digital Audio
Labs Digital Only CardD (DAL DO CardD,
http://www.digitalaudio.com/support/discont_support.htm). It is a bit-for-bit
digital ONLY ISA bus card. It simply has spdif coax in and out, no analog
connections at all. I picked it up less than a year ago for like $30 on ebay
and figured for that price you really can't argue if you have to do some
tweaking.
Anyway, I am experiencing 'clicking' problems with my transfers. I get random
clicks on my recorded wav files that are NOT on the original dats. I'm
guessing this has to do with the buffer over/underrunning problem due to the
fact that this is an ISA bus card. I think an important fact to note is that
my CPU (PIII 550) runs at about 90%-95% when recording and this seems WAYYYY
high for a transfer that is not even doing any A/D! I actually just upgraded
to a 1.4 GHz Celeron and during recording it is still at about 90-95% cpu
usage. I am connecting my DA-20 mkII directly to the soundcard via a hosa digi
cable so this shouldn't be a deck or cable problem.
Currently I've experienced the 'clicking' problem with my Dell p3 system, 512
mb ram, scsi hd, running windows 2k and xp pro. Obviously it should not be a
hardware limitation, I'm thinking more of a configuration problem being that
this is an 16-bit ISA card, rather than a 32-bit PCI card, which do not seem
to hog up the CPU cycles nearly as much. I had a similar experience with an
ISA vs. PCI SCSI card that I used for my burner. ISA was a CPU hog compared to
the PCI card that was doing the exact same 4x burn. An interesting point to
note is that I have also installed this card in a Pentium 200 (older) system
with about 64 mb of ram and 2 gig IDE hard disk running Windows 98 and as well
as my ears can tell it produced perfect transfers! You can actually get ahold
of that transfer since I seeded it on etree:
http://db.etree.org/shninfo_detail.php?shnid=6086
As you can see on the DAL site, there are no drivers for win 2k or higher. I
have got the card to function properly under 2k AND xp with the win nt drivers
for the CardDplus (ftp://ftp.digitalaudio.com/pub/cardd/cardnt.exe). But
obviously still have the ISA (most likely) related clicking problem. Does
anyone else happen to use the DAL DO CardD? I'm guessing it's a rarish card
mostly because of its age.
If anyone shed any light to how this problem can be solved running Win
nt/2k/xp on a p3 system I'd appreciate it and be happy to summarize and post
them back here.
Thanks!
Brian

I don't know if this would be easier to record to my Hard Drive, but I
would like to record the Webcast of the Alpine Valley broadcast this
weekend. Dead.net are recommending purchasing a subscription to Real
Audio to be able to listen to the show, and I was thinking of using the
digital audio outs from my M/audio 24/96 to record the broadcast to DAT.
I do have a DSL line, and wonder if any one knows if the broadcast will
be of good enough quality to be worth recording. If anyone knows 1.
Different software to use other than the newest real audio version, and
2. is the quality of the streaming going to be good enough to record to
dat and make a quality recording? I'd appreciate any help.

Hy Ben,
> My one question is whether i need the male or female XLR ends...
As usually, the soundboard has male-XLR connectors. So you must use
female-XLR to get the signal. You need a female-XLR to RCA cable for
each channel. If you want to make the cables for yourself, I can give
you the connecting diagramm.

Sure, there is. But you need definetely female-XLR. I did not see
something else so far. Except sometimes phono plugs ...

Hi heads:
Anybody care to help me with a Who show? I've see a show
appear recently (10-19-69 Philadelphia, Electric
Factory) for sale (ugh) as a SOUNDBOARD! I'm very
suspicious as this is one venue that I've seen very
little surface on, particularly soundboards.
I saw a lot of great shows there as a kid but
unfortunately missed this Who date.
Can anybody confirm or deny the source of this show
and possibly consider a trade if you have a copy?

Subject: Re: ZA2
Date: Tue, 30 Jul 2002 13:46:45 -0500
HI, all!
I"ve had a ZA2 since 1997 and had virtually no difficulties with it, using
it with WIn95, 98, NT4, and now WIn2000.
Back in the days of WIn95 and 98, I followed some of the suggestions made on
this list as well as on the Zefiro website, regarding DMA and CDR drive
autodetection.
I think the main reason that I have so few problems is that I have as simple
a computer setup as possible for my audio work. This means I have two
seperate computers for my use. The Internet computer is completely seperate
from the audio/photo computer. I use removable IDE hard drives for
booting, and have seperate ones for audio work, and another for Photoshop
and scanning. I even (still) have a couple of older drives that have NT4.0
on them for safety. This way, I don't have any bus busying, clock cycle
stealing applications running on my computer when booted up for audio work.
This way, I've also not had ANY computer crashes (that I didn't create
myself by fooling around with things I don't understand! ;-) ). It also
allows me to troubleshoot in the event of a problem, in that I can EASILY
change out the operating system and verify that a non-working CDR recorder
(for example) is not working because IT"S dead or because something got
messed up in software, due, perhaps, to a power failure while the computer
was running. (I have had this type of problem on the internet computer,
generally due to my having too many pieces of shareware software installed,
or by an unexpected shutdown due to power failure (or my knee hitting the
power button!!!! ;-) ).
One can successfullly make CDs on VERY obsolete computers,,, I've used a
90MHz Pentium with only 64Mb RAM running WIn 95 five years ago. I now use a
450Mhz PII with 1Gb RAM (for Photshop, mainly) and really don't see much
difference in speed (execpt when running signal processing routines on the
audio files.) I also have an IDE RAID array on this box as my working
drive set, but I boot from the IDE removable disk. Thus, it might be
worthwhile getting someone's cast-off computer (cheaply), and dedicating it
to ONLY audio work.
Thus, my advice to you (unsolicited, of course!) is to simplify the system
you use for audio purposes as much as you possibly can.
Hope this helps!

I've owned a ZA2 for quite some time, and I've never been able to get
it to work well in Windows, but it works GREAT in DOS.
Simply make up a DOS diskette, copy the relevant ZA2 configuration
files over to it, boot from the floppy, use the command line to record
to a WAV file, absolutely no problems.
The ZA2 is an ISA card, many motherboards think of ISA support as an
afterthought... current m/b don't even have ISA slots (!) and so on
modern systems with lots of stuff going on (ala Windows) the ISA bus
is often starved for CPU cycles and samples are missed. Missed
samples cause channel swapping.
So, use a DOS floppy, and the ZA2 will work like a champ.

I would say either 2 2-hour tapes or 1 3-hour tape. The first set clocks in

don't have exact times, but I am working from a friend who taped MD.

This is for their recent show at Jones Beach in Wantagh, NY.
It was recorded to the left of the soundboard with B&K's.
Mickey Hart plays on the first 40 minutes and Reid Genauer
sings lead on FOTD.
It's on two (2) SONY 90m DATs (one per set). Unfortunately
the first DAT (set I) has no A-time on it (but the music is there).
In return, I'd like two (2) sealed Sony or Maxell 90m DATs
plus postage.
First to respond after the Digest hits my mailbox gets it...unless
you're willing to do B+P's for others, which I would give
preference to (and then you wouldn't have to be 'first'), in
which case please tell me how many B+P's for others you're
willing to make...the highest # of B+P's offered will then get it.
'The contest' ends Friday when I leave for Alpine, but I will
email back all who respond.

Go ahead and try to met up with Geoff before the show...I taped Queensryche
4 times early in 2000 here in Germany/Switzerland.After the first show I
stealthtaped in Stuttgart I was able to get backstage and confronted the band
with the fact that they apparently changed their attitude towards taping since
they once were known to be taper friendly. They were very surprised to hear
that anything changed here and they said they are totally cool about me taping
their shows. They said they don't want to make it an official policy and tell
the venues in advance but if I was able to sneak my gear in I could tape
whatever Queensryche show I'm able to make it to.They even put me on the guest
list for the 3 shows to follow and were all very interested after the show
whether or not I was able to get past security and how my tape came out.Geoff was
especially kind and interested and listened to my efforts after every show.He
asked me to send a clone of all four shows to his wife in Seattle which I
gladly did.
My advice would be to met up with Geoff in advance and tell him about the
problems you had getting your gear in at previous shows...They way I got to
know him he'll surely try to help you out, especially at his solo shows...
