I, however, am looking for folks recording direct to their PCs. I know they are out there, but info on interest groups and hardware seems pretty scarce. So, I'm hoping for directions to find "direct-to-PC" recording info. No offense intended! Date: Wed, 31 Jul 2002 08:15:39 -0500 I just bought a DAT and have a few questions on transferring shows from DAT to cd. I currently have a standalone burner w/ optical in so I was planning on going DAT -> Standalone burner -> EAC -> .wav in order to get it to my pc to do the normalization & track splits. Does anyone see any problems going this route? I don't have the money to spend on getting a new soundcard, so I'm hoping this will work. I'm guessing I'll have to record 44.1kHz in order to keep it from resampling when I go from DAT -> Standalone burner right? I won't be doing any dat clones so I don't see the reason to go 48kHz? Sorry I'm fairly new to all of this and want to make sure I'm understanding this. Also what cables would I need in order to do this transfer, and also what cable would I need to patch other DAT. BTW I have a Sony TCD-D100 if that makes a diff. thanks, stoopidstp bwt: Free upload of any show on my list (; to the first two people to reply w/ BWT as the subject. ------------------------------ From: "Arnold, Joseph" Subject: ISO:Janes Addiction tour dates Date: Wed, 31 Jul 2002 09:22:32 -0400 All, Anyone know the current tour dates scheduled for Janes and could post them here or email me off list. I don't use a ZA2, but I do use it for a vriety of tasks. It's an AMD K6-2 450 ased computer, with an Asus P5A MOBO. I keep 256 megs of PC 100 RAM in it, and it seems to run almost as fast as a P3 700. I have a Plextr 12x10x32 SCSI Burner, a Plextor Ultrapex 40 max CD ROM in it, and an Adaptec 2940 SCSI card in it. It seems to burn faster than the claimed burning rate, and the rest of the box is reliable as an anvil. Use it to burn, sometimes throough a Network, sometimes using the 2 smaller older IBM drives, that have been quiet as a church mouse since 1998 or so. I think of selling it, but the money I coud get for it isn't squat compared to the use I get out of it. Craig ------------------------------ From: Mac Subject: Fwd: RE: ISA Digi Soundcard Tweaking (Clicking and Popping) Date: Wed, 31 Jul 2002 12:24:12 -0400 Hey folks, In my search for info about my Prodif24, which has documented problems with clicks/pops/etc (it is an ISA card), I discovered a newsgroup at news.sekd.com > alt.sekd. It appears to be maintained by SEK'D, but it seems to have a wealth of info regarding digital soundcards (mostly SEK'D), transfers, software (mostly Samplitude, but some others), etc, which I think may well be generally applicable. Specifically, they mention some solutions to the clicking and popping issues, which sound like they may be generic ISA card issues... Here are some excerpts: "Regarding the clicks and pops: I had this problem for several months. 1. In control panel:system:performance:graphics turn hardware acceleration OFF 2. Disable swap file 3. Have Virtual memory size NOT be handled by Windows, and manually set a large size, like 40 megs. Try swapping DMA channels... This worked for another Prodif24 owner." This info is accessible via "newgroups", which I couldn't get at with Netscape 4.08, but I could with Netscape 6, under Tasks/Mail & Newsgroups. First you have to subscribe, and download headers.... Well, I will leave this as an excercise, since I can't quite remember how I did it... (Never actually looked at newsgroups before yesterday!...) Another thing which I have come across is this: "Bring up the Control Panel and double-click on Administrative Tools. Click on Services and sort the list by Status. Turn off every service that you possibly can. You'll be told when a service can't be shut down. Some of the problematic applications like Antivirus apps running in the background or the *****Auto-Insert CD detection service that constantly checks to see if media has been inserted in your CD drive(s) (thus utilizing the I/O bus and potentially disrupting your DAT transfer) can be shut down here****." (emphasis mine) I found this at http://www.cdrfaq.org/ , which has a HUGE FAQ all about recording CD's. Quite worth checking out. Sorry if this is old news... Hope it helps. Mac Brian Kelly said: >"...Currently I've experienced the 'clicking' problem with my Dell p3 system, 512 mb ram, scsi hd, running windows 2k and xp pro. Obviously it should not be a hardware limitation, I'm thinking more of a configuration problem being that this is an 16-bit ISA card, rather than a 32-bit PCI card, which do not seem to hog up the CPU cycles nearly as much...." ------------------------------ From: "paul gluchanicz" Subject: WTD: Phil and Friends 7-28 WPB/DYLAN/Springsteen Date: Wed, 31 Jul 2002 17:16:37 +0000 Looking for the Phil and Friends from West Palm Beach 7-28-02 and also anything from the upcoming Dylan and Springsteen tours(also any of the Asbury shows). Anyway, Thanks to all who have sent thier best wishes in this crisis. We are now back to a one hour evacuation notice because the winds have kicked up and if the two fires merge its adios homestead. So once again for those that did not read the first message I sent ( digest #411 ) I am unable to do any dubbing and/or burning right now. So please be patient. I have had a couple of unpleasant notes from people saying I am flaking. To them all I can say is grab a shovel and some heavy boots and work clothes and come help out the fire fighters that are working so hard to get these fires put out. I will keep all posted as things change and when I can get back to trading.... Peace, Michael __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! I plan to distribute some of the items to friends on CDs, so I'm going to be putting the audio on a PC for cleanup, tracking and burning. In particular, I've got some wonderful recordings of falcon ridge folk festival from this past weekend. My best attempt so far (though the musicians and sound staff did a fantastic job too, of course!). :) As an aside, I've learned about all the pre-processing things: Pre EQ Dos: =========== o Monitor using isolating headphones. o Find a good location. Location, location, location. o Place your mics on a stable stand. o Place your mics as high as reasonable at that location. o Seat your louder friends as far away as possible. o Have other people in your group aware of the sensitivity of the mics to conversation (for themselves and the interventions with the inevitable middle-of-song curious people who show up on your tarp asking about the mic stand) o Have attenuator cables (5db and 10db) at the ready for swapping in to prevent brickwalling. o Hope the people in the creaky aluminum lawn chairs nearby stop squirming and take a nap. Pre EQ Don'ts: ============== o Scream too loudly. o Kick the mic stand. o Use zippers or velcro close by. o Use the mic limiter as a compression circuit. My questions, though, are on post processing. I can see myself performing the following tasks (a couple for all recordings, the others for some of the more problematic recordings): o EQ (mostly low-low and mid-mid attenuation, some high-high enhancement)* o Normalization o Slight Compression (to raise some quiet sections up a bit) o A few click and pop reductions (a case of a bad mic cable, which mostly caused problems in between songs). The last two are primarily to be "nice" to people's stereo equipment. My questions are specifically: 1. What would the recommended order of steps be? Where best is defined as "best output" based on both the reducing the effects of resampling errors as well as allowing my ears to make the best decisions along the way. 2. Would it behoove me to work in the 32-bit domain if performing multiple transformations or is 16-bit good enough? -brendan * I'm listening to some of the DATs on a Sony PCM-R500 hooked up to a cheap sony all-in-one bookshelf stereo unit. The neat trick is that the unit has some drop in "eq-profiles" instead of bass/mid/treble knobs. I find that the "Sports" profile matches the EQ settings mentioned above, odd but true. And it makes things sound great. ------------------------------ From: "Marc Nutter" Subject: Mid-Summer Sale at Sonic Sense Date: Wed, 31 Jul 2002 15:41:36 -0600 Hi All, Here's just a quick note to let everyone know: We have a nice collection of pre-owned microphones and pre-amps on sale through Friday, August 2, 2002.
