I have some dats ready for you. Please contact me! Thanks for BW! Todd ------------------------------ From: DCin10AC Subject: FS: Gear Date: Sun, 04 Aug 2002 19:29:10 -0500 Not sure if this went through the first time or not. Apologies to the list if it appears twice... I've decided it's time to consolidate and scale my rig and some of my home gear down a little, so I figured I'd post here first to see what interest there might be. I have the following available: 1. Casio DA-7 with AC adapter, plus Eco Charge battery and Eco-Charger and hard plastic padded carrying case. The battery was giving me six hours or so between charges, but the last time I used it I only got about 30 minutes so it may need a couple of full discharges and recharges. I usually use AC as this is my "board patch" deck so the battery has been idle for a while. Internal battery also included. $575 OBO 2. Panasonic SV-255 with AC adapter, 2 Eco-charge 6V batteries, 2 Panasonic 6V batteries and one Powesonic 20 hour battery, plus an Eco-Charger to recharge them all. Also comes with one extra internal battery. $1000 for everything OBO 3. HHb CDR-850 - still works great, just don't have much use for it now because I go direct to PC. Original box, manual, etc. $500 OBO If anyone wants all of it the total price is negotiable. Also have a Sony XM Satellite Radio (home) if anyone's interested. I like it, but I just never listen to it so it's probably better off with someone else. I've probably turned the unit on less than a dozen times. Paid $300; looking for $225 or so I guess. Make me an offer. Anyone interested in any of these items please contact me directly. Thanks! Crouch ------------------------------ From: "Candace Horgan" Subject: Cleaning up DATs Date: Sun, 4 Aug 2002 21:51:35 -0600 Brendan asked: Here's my general take on things. First of all, I don't use Cool Edit, I use SAW. If you load a 16 bit DAT tape into SAW, it automatically adds 8 bits on when you move it to a multi-track setting. All your compressiong, limiting, processing etc. then is done in a 24 bit setting, giving you more to play with. Before you burn to CD, you dither down to 16 bits. If Cool Edit works this way and you intend to do destructive processing to your masters, then yes, go to 32 bit. As for the other stuff: Order: EQ, compression, normalize, then do pop reductions to the new mix. On another note, I think you should try to avoid EQ at all costs, unless the master is really bad. Most CDs I've heard where people have done extensive EQ end up sounding worse. Besides, isn't the ultimate goal of the tape to give you the most accurate representation of what you heard at the show? If so, no EQ, unless the engineer didn't know what s/he was doing. Cheers Candace ------------------------------ From: CCR4EVR@aol.com Subject: In Response To Scott Brown's Accusations Date: Mon, 05 Aug 2002 00:11:34 -0400 I need to make an official response to Scott Brown's accusations and make it abudantly clear where both my son and myself stand in this situation. I am 100% guilty of the accusations made by Scott and the rest of his band of "investigators". I am not going to sit here and attempt to deny the charges. However, what needs to be made clear is the involvement of my son in my illicit actions (or rather, his lack thereof). My son never has nor will he ever condone the selling of live music for profit. In fact, from the very beginning my son was extremely clear in his defense of the above. This is predominantly why I had to keep my actions so discrete and out of the suspicion of Austin. Anyone who thinks my son Austin is guilty based on the evidence provided by Scott Brown in his post is relying on nothing more than guilt by association. There is absolutely nothing in his post that directly links Austin to what I was doing. The reason? He wasn't involved. I do want to make a direct response to one of Scott's "conclusions" he made in his post regarding the sale of U2 2001 shows while Austin was still "presumably a HS senior and living at home." First of all, the fact that Austin was home only made it that much easier for me to get my hands on the recordings he owned. But aside from this, the mere fact that Austin was living at home does not in any way immediately mean he HAD to have known what was going on. And he didn't. So Scott makes the "conclusion" that Austin must have been involved since he was living at home--- but unfortunately, one doesn't lead to another. Austin didn't know I was selling while living at home, and he also didn't know while at school in NYC. Bottom line, end of story. But perhaps I can't fault Scott entirely. He's obviously going to have to make a few assumptions in this situation in order to say anything meaningful. So let me say this to Scott and the rest of the list as well: Austin was in and out of the house his FINAL two years of HighSchool due to the treatment of brain wave irregularaties (which happen to run in our family). I can't believe I'm writing this on an online forum for DAT taping/trading but it certainly makes something quite clear: don't make assumptions and jump to conclusions in situations where you can't possibly be informed of ALL the circumstances of someone's personal life. While I'm on the subject of illicit actions, I also wish to make it clear that I was also responsible for any/all instances of ticket scalping that Austin may have been accused of being responsible for. Austin does not scalp tickets...he's too busy helping out all of his friends and family to be making money from the tickets he acquires. And I doubt very much that any will contest this---I can only imagine the number of people Austin has helped along the road in getting what they needed. And one other situation to address: the sale of an Incubus show that Scott claimed was proof I was still not finished selling. I think it's pretty obvious that I wouldn't even think of selling a show for quite awhile, let alone a mere few weeks after all of the trouble and attention I have brought upon myself. It was my plan to get the person's real name who was asking me for the Incubus show so I could find out who it was trying to harass me/trick me into selling once again. It was just another pathetic attempt by Scott to implicate my innocent son in the actions of his guilty father. Not to mention Scott also accused Austin of avoiding him at a show Austin didn't even attend! (and yes, this can be proven quite easily). So in conclusion, the bottom line is that Austin is innocent (as he has claimed all along). Whether you choose to believe him is entirely your choice. If you do decide to deal with my son in the future, do be aware that I am through selling and that giving Austin access to shows will not lead to more selling on eBay. I think it's pretty obvious that I've done enough harm to Austin's reputation and that I would not even think of even attempting to further harness his ability to collect live music. However, I do urge you to keep any accusations you might have to yourself and refrain from further attempts to damage my son's repuation. Any other personal attacks made upon my son will be dealt with the appropriate manners...so take that whichever way you wish to take it. If you want to come after me for my illicit actions, go right ahead...but you had BETTER leave my son out of it. Oh and one question for you Scott: I know we're all in agreement that the sale of your Jackson Browne show was wrong. I was wondering.....did Mr. Browne himself give you permission to tape his show? Didn't think so. So just keep that in mind the next time you start preaching just how terrible selling shows is. (DISCLAIMER: This in no way implies that I think selling music is fine. It is not.) I apologize for making this so long, but there was much to be said and much to cover. Thanks for your time and space. I'm planning to run audio out to a DAT recorder in REC mode (no tape) to bypass the typically questionable computer sound card issue and use a known good D/A converter. I plan to then hook up the analog outputs of the DAT to a pair of active monitor speakers. Would anyone care to make recommendations on active monitors in both the <= $300 range *and* the <= $600 range, as I'm willing to give up one of my other planned purchases if the <= $300 range isn't worth considering. I think you likely have the lock (hold) switch turned on. THis is the switch that prevents you from accidentally changing anything while you are recording. I had this problem with my D-3 some years ago, and was very embarassed when I took it in to Sony (45 minute drive each way, then) and the tech took one look at it and pointed to the offending switch! Guy Clark <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> From: "Fares Halteh" Subject: R300 Problems Date: Sun, 4 Aug 2002 13:45:38 -0400 I set my deck to play back a tape to my digi card before I left my house the others day. It was a 3 hr Sony dat. Anyways I was gone for about 24 hrs, with the tape sitting in the deck the whole time (probably not the smartest idea). I got back home this morn. only to find a message reading "caution" on the deck. I now can't get the tape out of the deck; the door won't open. I tried powering the deck on and off with no luck. I can't rewind or play the tape back either, I just get the "caution" error. I want the tape out of the deck, and if possible I'd like to save the tape. I figured I'd post here before I hacked the machine with a pair of plyers. I bought the deck used with no manual. I have no idea what this "caution" sign signifies. Any help is very much appreciated. Again the deck is the Sony PCM-300, thanks. --Fares ------------------------------ From: eric spag Subject: Tobin selling saga Date: Mon, 5 Aug 2002 13:38:33 -0700 (PDT) i have been friends with Austin & Michael Tobin for upwards of 3years now, and just wanted to chime-in on the latest controversy... having recently spoken with both parties on several occasions, i'm _convinced_ that Austin was not aware of his father's actions. this distinction is important to Austin... i surely don't condone the selling of recordings, and i must say i was surprised and disappointed to hear of this having taken place. however, i believe Michael deserves the same opportunity that i appreciate when i make a mistake: the chance to acknowledge my error, learn from it and correct my ways. this taper/trader will continue to allow both men unrestricted access to my music-library and will continue to count both men as friends. sincerely, eric spagnoli spag8@yahoo.com __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
