For Sale: Library Card Catalog (solid wood) with 90 drawers
This is in the Berkeley area of the East Bay. It holds lots of
DATs. I can take a couple of digi pictures if you're interested. It's in
nice shape. The top can come off which has 30 drawers in it. Each drawer
can hold at least 25+ dats.
You will need some kind of truck to move, it's heavy!

I got some shows that are no longer "in my rotation" and i'd be happy to swap
for unwrapped blanks of sony or maxell , 60 or 90 m . I believe there is a
total of 12. I'm on the road right now but i'll be home in a week to be able
to mail these out. I'd like them all to go to the same home , they love
eachother.

Subject: Overloading mic pre-amp on a D8
Date: Fri, 9 Aug 2002 10:23:54 -0700 (PDT)
Hi, all. A question for those of you who know the
Sony D8:
Last night I taped Sonic Youth with Core Sound
Binaural mics with bass roll-off filter into the
mic-in on a D8. I kept the input peaking near -6dB &
-4db for the entire set and checked the levels
frequently during the show. When I played the tape
this morning, I can hear some of the bass distorting
(or clipping?) when the volume increases. I called
Len, and he was able to tell me that if you keep the
volume under 4 while running into the mic-in on a D8,
you are overloading the mic pre-amp. Also, he
mentioned that using line-in effectively negates the
bass roll-off filter altogether (which is what I did
when I taped Queens of the Stone Age in June, and I
didn't have any bass distortion, but I did notice the
sound was boomy).
Sorry if that's old news to some of you, but my
question is this: How can I attempt to repair that
distorted bass sound in Cool Edit Pro? It's not
prevalent through every minute of the tape, but when
things start heating up, the distorted sound is there.
Please e-mail me off-list with any suggestions you may
have. Unfortunately, I can't do a BWT or B&P right
now, but I'd love to be able to offer this show up if
I can fix the problem mentioned above, as the clear
moments sound very nice indeed.
Thanks,
*phiL*

A few different topics...
I'll be taping Beck this sunday. What is his stance on taping? How long
have his sets been? And I'll be taping from the balcony in a small theater.
I'm taping Rush the next night. What is their stance on taping? And I'll
be doing this one from the lawn, any suggestions there?
All info is welcomed! Thanks!

existed or were made when the hijacked planes crashed into the WTC and
Pentagon. We've obviously all seen the video recordings. Apparently

While I agree that what you say about Bonnie Raitt is true, and
personally Jorma probably feels the same way, comparing Jorma to Bonnie
Raitt s not quite the same. BTW, I am going to see Bonnie Raitt this
September at the Greek Theater in LA, and I have a front row seat right
in front of the sound system, I am disabled, and they have front row
disabled seats. Bonnie goes on tour and fills venues holding upwards of
15,000, and has concistently for the last 13 years or so. Jorma is
playing to venues of 150 to 1,000 capacity, Bonnie has won Grammy's, and
a whole pile of them about 10 years ago. Jorma got inducted to the R+R
Hall of Fame for work he did 35 years ago. They ain't in the same boat.
Everyting Bonnie records, ships Platinum, I don't think anything Jorma
has released has ever sold platinum. All I am saying is give the guy
every break he can have, regardless of his own feelings. I think to a
large extent Jorma is not to happy about allowing open taping for so
long, now has a contract that forbids it, so he personally is for the
people who have supported him for all these years. However, I feel to
support him with his contract with Columbia is the best thing we can do
for this great man, and put our wants aside.
Along with Bonnie Raitt, it seems every show Clapton plays, wind up as a
SBD Bootleg. Seems like some money is changing hands under the table.
That's another story.

Actually, that is the RIAA's OPINION of the Federal Law. The real statute
is:
---BEGIN
§ 2319A. Unauthorized Fixation of and Trafficking in Sound Recordings and
Music Videos of Live Musical Performances
(a) Offense.--Whoever, without the consent of the performer or performers
involved, knowingly and for purposes of commercial advantage or private
financial gain--
(1) fixes the sounds or sounds and images of a live musical performance in a
copy or phonorecord, or reproduces copies or phonorecords of such a
performance from an unauthorized fixation;
(2) transmits or otherwise communicates to the public the sounds or sounds
and images of a live musical performance; or
(3) distributes or offers to distribute, sells or offers to sell, rents or
offers to rent, or traffics in any copy or phonorecord fixed as described in
paragraph (1), regardless of whether the fixations occurred in the United
States;
---END
Pleaes note (a) which says "for purposes of commercial advantage or private
financial gain". Funny how the RIAA left that part out!

> has anyone on here recently taped at the state? i'm wondering what the door procedure is.
Hello,
I taped there once and have been back as a non-taper twice this year.
Here is the procedure.
You get in line. When the line commences to move and you get to the
outer doors they tell you "men go in this door and women in the
other." This is due to the searches.
You get a total pat down. Not 100% thorough, however. Sometimes
wands but if you have your gear in your crotch in front of the zipper
and belt buckle no problem. Before they wand you ask them where the
toilets are and that you have to go really bad. They may quickly wand
you and you'll be on your way. Works for me.
Get past the pat down and you are home free.
The venue is a converted movie palace. The balcony is still intact
but the main floor auditorium is a bar /dance floor type of design.
The rear 2/3 of the auditorium is bar / table seating and the rest
down front is mosh pit territory (fun spot) unless they put folding
chairs down there (only for assigned seatig shows).
You best bet is to tape from the balcony at the very edge. You are
less likely to get caught there. However, if you are with friends you
may want to get a seat at the main floor and have them sit on either
side of you.
As far as I know all the shows at the State have been general
admission unless staed other wise. You get to pick your seat at most
of them.
I taped Robert Plant there last year and it turned out fine. However,
it was assigned seating. I was in the 6th row. Saw Rob Zombie and
Garbage there this year at the barricades. General admission.
The State Theater is one of the most fun venues that I have ever been
to. The sound is also not too loud due to the size of the venue.
Hope this helps.
Have a nice day, :)

Subject: TO ALL DAT TAPERS HELP!!
Date: Fri, 09 Aug 2002 17:39:37 -0400
Hello Everyone,
I have a question for everyone who tapes Live shows using DAT. I have a
Sony TCD-D100 and a lot of you are probably going to write me and tell me
I've been doing it all wrong, but I've been stuck into using the 32K (Long
play / 4 hours of tape on a 120min) when recording because I don't know if
the concert is going to last over 2 hours and I don't feel comfortable with
having to switch tapes during a show and possibly missing one of my favorite
songs.
Many of you probably want to know if I plan to just keep these as DATs,
well, probably not, eventually they will be transferred to CDR, but you
guessed it, only after I get one of those Marantz Professional CD Recorders
that will allow Sample Rate Conversion and No SCMS copy protection. I'm not
interested in using my computer to transfer DATs to CDR. I'd probably have
to buy a whole new computer anyway to do this since the one I have now is a
bit outdated. I'm just going to stick with Home Audio CD recorders and DAT
decks for now.
Like I said, many of you are probably going to criticize me for using the
slower speed instead of 44.1K or 48K, But I'd like to hear any suggestions
some of you may have. What do you guys out there do when your not sure as
too how long a show might be?? Do you risk it and just be ready to switch
tapes anytime you can?? Or are there more of you out there than I think who
also use 32K just so you don't have to risk switching the tape in the middle
of the show and losing a song because you had to switch tapes? And what do
some of you do if you know for sure that a show is going to last over 2
hours?
Thanks Everyone!
