From: "Axl 2076" <axl2076@hotmail.com> Subject: TO ALL DAT TAPERS HELP!! part 2 Date: Sat, 10 Aug 2002 17:51:43 -0400 Hello Everyone, Thanks to all those who wrote me and gave me info about my problem with concerts that last over 2 hours. I think I'm going to take the advice many of you gave and Record at 44.1k to avoid sample rate conversion when I transfer to CDR and use 3 hour tapes (Sony DDS tapes DG90P from American Digital at $2.09ea.) That seems like a way better price than what I was paying for standard 2 hour Sony DAT Audio Tapes at $6ea. The only thing now is I'd like to hear from some of you guys out there who have used these 3 hour tapes in your Portable DAT decks. I've heard that some people have blamed these long tapes for ruining their decks. And these tapes have been known to stretch and become unplayable after some use. Anyone who has something to say about this please let me know. I think I might be safe though, if I only use these tapes when I do believe a concert may go over 2 hours and that if I retention the tape once prior to recording, Rewind it after the show, play it once back during the transfer to CDR, then Rewind it again to the beginning to store away and hope that I won't need it again since I've made a CDR, this should be fine I think and not put too much wear on the tape or deck. Open to any suggestions or info any of you may have about these 3 hour tapes or recording shows over 2 hours. Thanks again everyone! Or if you won't use 3 hour tapes, just switch tapes between songs the tape starts getting close to the 2 hour mark. Using 32k is not recommended because there is compression involved nor accepted as a "standard" in CD trading. If these CDs are just for yourself, then go right ahead and do what works best for you. From: Dan Gale <dgale@loslobos.org> Subject: Help with 80's Mic Info Date: Sun, 11 Aug 2002 00:54:52 -0700 I'm hoping some folks out there who were around the GD taping scene in the mid 80's can help me identify some taping gear I patched out of a few times. I'm in the process of transfering some of my analog masters and sadly wasn't always very good about keeping track of the recording gear I plugged into back then. In particular, I'm transfering some shows from a rig I remember well but don't know any of the specifics of what it was. The mics were each mounted on flat ~8-10" diameter plexiglass discs. The mics themselves were always in a homemade silk windscreen when I remember them (always outdoors obviously) so I don't know the exact shape/appearance of the capsules but the overall size/shape was about the diameter of a 50 cent piece and about 1/2" thick. If I remember correctly, the each mic was attached to a cable with some sort of RF connector through the back of the plexiglass discs. I don't recall any specifics on the rest of their gear and can't remember the guy's name who ran them, although I know he was always around west coast GD shows in the mid 80's. Specific show I remember patching into this rig are: 8/24/85 Boreal Ridge (we ran FOB, halfway from Sbd to stage on a stand and never got hassled) 9/7/86 Ranch Rock - Pyramid Lake NV (w/Kingfish, Robert Hunter, John Cipollina and Mickey Hart) 6/27-28/85 Lindley Meadow , Golden Gate Park, SF (free show w/John Lee Hooker, Jessie Colin Young, KBC Band etc.) I know this rig was at many more shows then this but I definitely remember these shows in particular. Please contact me if you can help with the source info for this rig. Once I get all this straight I'll get some of this stuff out to the masses. Thanks in advance for any help folks can offer.

From: Keith Bode <t.tunakebo@verizon.net> Subject: Re: Jorma Stealth Taping Date: Sun, 11 Aug 2002 02:54:35 -0700 "If Jorma is okay with people taping him, and he's aware of his record contract terms and status but still says he's okay with people taping, than what harm is being done? Jorma probably realizes he will not be a big recording star again, nor will he likely sell out 15,000 seat venues on his own. However, by having people tape him and spread his music around he makes sure he can continue to earn a living doing what he likes to do, which is play live. And his live performances will contribute to his album sales. I saw him open for Phil Lesh twice this summer, and based on the excellent material he played I've gone out and bought his latest album. I also have tapes of the performances I saw (which, btw, were done with his full permission as all the shows were open taping). If a performer is okay with people taping, and in fact encourages it, who are we to tell him people shouldn't tape him?" So, we should do anything people will say under the table "it's OK" and not consider wether what is in the individuals best interest? I think the argument that Stealth Tapes creates fans is total BS. I would be willing to bet that playing his Columbia release woould be more likely to convert a non fan into a fan than a Stealth Tape. Personally, I did not engage in an Analog trading, because I heard a few tapes, and I was appalled by the sound quality of what was circulating. I never got any Dead shows except comercial releases from 1967 to 1999. I still went to plenty of shows. Same thing with Hot Tuna, or any of Jorma's other releases. I thing the argument that playing a Stealth recorded, or even an Aud recording is the last thing I would think of doing to convert an indivdual to a fan. Listening to an AUD, for me anyway, was something I had to learn to apprecciate. I certainly didn't enjoy the first AUD I listened to, and a lot more after that. There are still alot of AUDS that just suck. I had to get used to it. Use all the rationalizations and justifications you choose. The bottom line is "Is what you do more likely to hurt or help Jorma, in spite of what he wants?" I went to see Jorma this year, because I wanted to see Jorma. I saw Phil, too, front row seats too. After seeing both, if Jorma was opening for Phil, it would decrease the likelyhood of my seeing him. I bought Jorma's CD, because I planned to buy it, once I read about what he was doing, not because he was a good opening act. I think with the arguments you have expressed here, take people to see Phil. If you want to justify doing what you want, it makes me aggravated that people are so selfish as to not care about the mans welfare, not just you, but hundreds more Stealthing Jorma also. Why don't you find out from a Columbia exec how they feel about Jorma encouraging Stealth taping under the table? From: Keith Bode <t.tunakebo@verizon.net> Subject: Re: Stealth Taping Jorma Date: Sun, 11 Aug 2002 02:58:25 -0700 BTW, how does taping Jorma, in a concert where taping is allowed relate to Stealth Taping? It doesn't, so why bring it up in a discussion of Stealth Taping? Keith -- Please check out http://www.wotwild.com for some great animal art and wall decorations.

From: "Javi Dieguez" <jdieguez@wanadoo.es> Subject: OKMIIR: which preamp? Date: Sun, 11 Aug 2002 15:33:50 +0200 I have been using OKMIIR mics for a year and i'm not fully satisfied with the included A3 adaptor. The bass roll off filter cuts too much bass and the bass distorts if it's too loud (not sure if it's because of the A3 or the mics themselves though). I would like some feedback from other OKMIIR users who have upgraded to other preamps. Which one do you recommend?? Thanks! Javi

Reply-To: dnemeth01@sprynet.com Date: Sun, 11 Aug 2002 12:30:29 -0400 Hello, I just recently defragmented my harddrive and have about 12 shows on my HD. Many are raw WAV files and some are SHNs. Does defragmenting my HD cause me to have files that have errors in them? Will I have any sound files that have been altered? Nothing irreplacable is on my HD but I need to know if I should just re-rip some discs and make new transfers from my MDs. Thanks in advance.
