From: Philip Smoker <psmoker43@yahoo.com> Subject: Re: mailing cd-r's Date: Sat, 17 Aug 2002 17:27:20 -0700 (PDT) Hi, all. I use a relatively inexpensive method for mailing cd-r's that I picked up from a good friend of mine. I place the discs in a small ziplock sandwich baggie with a piece of scrap paper the size of a cd-r between each disc. I've never had a problem or complaint from using this method, and a baggy is cheaper and lighter than numerous disc sleeves. The baggy full of discs always goes in a bubble envelope, although I've received discs in a regular manila envelope before without any problems thanks to careful packaging. BWT/B&P: I owe a freebie to the list, so I'm offering a Queens of the Stone Age show from 6/2/02 at the Nightclub 9:30 in Washington, DC (with Dave Grohl drumming). I'll take the first few responses once the digest hits my inbox. Please include "QOTSA" in the subject line. Thanks, *phiL* __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? From: GaoBest@aol.com Subject: ISO hall&oates/todd tour Date: Sun, 18 Aug 2002 02:27:11 EDT Hey people, I just found out that Todd Rundgren (who produced some of H&Os earlier albums before they made it huge) and Hall & Oates (aka Daryl & John, not to be confused with Dave & Tim) are touring in the East and MidWest for some dates in August. Has anybody taped any of the shows, because I'd love to get one or two nights; I'm assuming they're all doing the same songlists each night. I can swap on dat/cdr, although due to being superbusy with work and having moved, I'm a bit slow on trades (so probably best for me to send first), but I am interested in trying to set something up with a patient trader. I live in San Francisco and taped Love in July but haven't gotten around to listening to it, also taped Doves in June, Neil Halstead in April, Sleater Kinney in January, and allegedly will do Coldplay on Sunday. Also have a zillion or at least 400 other dats of music out there, including some other good live Daryl and John. ta Mike

I set up a trade for the Jorma show I offered. I've seen this guy post a lot so no big deal. I get the disc today. they were wrapped in news paper and taped in cardboard. I pop them in and they are not the year listed (really don't care about that. I can figure out what it really is) and they were TAO. I sent him a email. I thought it was nice enough. >>>I got the disc today. they are mislabeled. it is not from 74. it's got a song off the new album. and its TAO!! I would not have traded for it if I had known this.>>> didn't even mention the fact that they weren't in sleeves or a bubble mailer. this was his response. >>>then I fucked up. dot have a friggin heart attack, like some broad. you let me know about it, nicely, and I take care of it. now, you can stick it up your ass.>>> ===================================================================== all the guy had to do was say i sent the wrong discs. i dont need a lecture , or attitude. if i need any of that, i'll call my house :). i trade a lot, with a lot of you. done a lot of repeat trades too. i've also made a few mistakes over the years too. always made good on them, often times throw in an extra for the hassle. never once when i fucked up did i get an e mail like that . it was always mike, i think you sent the wrong discs, can you check for me . or something along those lines. its a hobby, a pleasant one. i try to be pleasant, he wasnt. he can still stick the discs . please see my music trading page: New URL http://hometown.aol.com/mhooker216/myhomepage/index.html being its AOL, its not always up. try it a few times, or ask me for a text list. thanks have fun, mike hooker

The Dudes? If this is a reincarnate of the Subdudes last time thru here Tommies manage was very taper friendly as well. From: "Stanley W. About 1 tape (new, factory wrapped) in 100 will refuse to load or misload in the R-300, R-500, DA-20, or DA-30 rackmount decks. The ratio of misloads in the portables (D7, D8, M1) is slightly higher, 3-5 in 100 (_especially_ on tapes that have not been repacked first...), and lower in the HHB PDR-100, about 1 in 300. (you know it's really a $^(#&d-up tape when the HHB won't load it ... ;) ) For example, a friends D7 (of much milage) has been recording occasional "blank" tapes for the last 6 months or so. The cause of the problem was an out of adjustment tape tensioner, so that while the the tape would load and advance, the meters would show level and A-time, and all apeared well, the tape was not actually in contact with the heads... !!! =| I've seen similar problems on aging P1s... If the tape is not retracting fully into the shell when ejected, then either the loading arms, tape idlers, or some other part of the load/eject mechanism is out of adjustment. There are many moving parts in DAT drives, in delicate adjustment. The more moving parts there are in a system, the more likely it is that some misalignment will occur. (Murphy's corollary #6) These types of problems are more likely _symptoms_ of a mechanical problem with the specific deck, and not necessarily related to either the type of tape or the type of deck. The other main cause of misloads and tape jams (other than the off-sized shell issues) is pilot error... an anxious operator pushing buttons before the deck has had a chance to load and seat the tape... From: John <jjq68@optonline.net> Subject: Sample Rate Conversion - Prodif 32/Soundforge Date: Sun, 18 Aug 2002 12:30:01 -0400 Please forgive me if this topic has been beat to death on the list already, but I am just entering the world of PC recording. I picked up a cheap (used)Prodif 32 PCI card, and copies of Soundforge XP 4.0 and Cd Architect 4.5 with intentions of recording my dats to hard drive, and then burning red book audio cd's from the files. All is well if I am transfering a dat originally recorded at 44.1, but for dats recorded at 48k, it seems the Prodif 32 does not support real time sample rate conversion (can anyone verify this??) Soundforge will not allow recording to start, unless the sample rate of the incoming signal is matched, and chosen in the drop down box (in this case 48k) So, I record the file at 48k, but when I pull the file into Cd Architect, it plays at the wrong speed! (too slow). It seems the software automatically changes the file to 44.1 (which is what I want obviously)......but its useless if the pitch has been altered. Changing it back to 48k restores the proper pitch, but it cant be burned to cd at that frequency. Any ideas what could be wrong?? The strange thing is, if I pull this wav. file into the shareware program CDWAV, none of this happens! I can edit the file (no pitch issues), burn it to cd, and somehow it ends up in 44.1 without me doing a thing !! So perhaps its a Soundforge issue... Any ideas/suggestions would be greatly appreciated by this frustrated newbie! :-)

I've seen it all! Here's the trading Gospel according to Tom: Do not use cdr's on your electric sander then send them to me in trade :( Remove all sticky substances from recording surface, i.e. peanut butter & jelly, super glue, and the like. If you're going to wrap my cd-r's in newspaper, please don't recycle the used paper from your bird gage ! Photo copies of one's ass do not constitute suitable art scans :) Enough silliness, all it takes is a little TLC.Use good media, burn DAO, handle with care, and mail discs in individual sleeves for protection. How hard is that? Tom
