Hi there,
I have several recording issues I'm trying to resolve and I knew you guys
would be able to help... I'm an old DAT trader who has some new projects to
work on... There's just two things I need to be able to do really... and
wanted the best advice on how to do it...
I need to be able to get my dats from my tascam DA-P1 to my hard drive so I
can burn them, I already have everything to do the burning... and a brand
new sony vaio computer... I got a soundblaster extigy but I'm thinking of
sending it back because I don't think it will work well with the second
thing I need to be able to do... Which is record microphone sources into my
multi-track recording software... which is syntrillium cool edit pro... Is
there a better way to be able to record from my da-p1 using spdif and also
be able to take microphone sources into my computer.... the extigy could
possibly work for both, but i'd have to get a microphone that used a 1/8
inch phono plug.... Do good ones even exist like that??? HELP!!!!

Finally got a line on an original Sony 7pin>coax active cable thanks
to Spyros from Down Under (BTW -- he still has some cables available
shipped at less than Sony's US retail when they were in production;
see Digest #429 for details)!! But now the question is what kind of
adaptor do I need to use to go Zefiro mini-coax out>7 pin standard
coax>M1? Can I simply use a standard stereo (or mono?) Radio Scrap
miniplug>RCA adaptor out of the InBox's mini-coax jack?
I bought the Zefiro InBox second-hand and it did not have the
mini-coax adaptor that apparently is included when purchased new.
I've had a lot of problems using the Toslink (optical out) with this
when I stealth, I assume caused by bending the cable sharply when
going out of the InBox.
Any help appreciated.

Here's how I have mine stored away. I think I have over a thousand cdrs
there. I bought the tupperware at Zellers here in Canada, which is
equivelant to say Walmart in America.

Note also that the digi-in (-) terminal is common with the chassis
ground while the digi-out is not (it is coupled via a capacitor to
chassis ground). Both digi jacks have a 75 ohm resistor across them
internally in the deck (I just happen to have a DTR-80P that is in
pieces right now). I've played a little with the digi-out both with a
regular tip-ring-sleeve cable (which effectively grounds the digi-out
to chassis ground when inserted) and using a test jumper to ground the
digi-out (-) to chassis and it doesn't seem to affect anything while
playing or recording. I don't know why Denon (Casio) decided to leave
the digi-out (-) floating, but they probably had a good reason. I
suppose in a chain with lots of gear all powered from different sources,
it might cause a problem. I'll stick with my tip-ring-sleeve cable,
but I'll bring the tip-ring-ring-sleeve cable along from now on in case
there is ever a problem in a chain.

After converting my 800+ dats to cd, plus trades, I have around 3000 cd's.
I use Caselogic 3-tray boxes. Each will hold 200-300 cd's. I keep each cd
in in a case logic sleeve with a disc song list with show details for each
disc. While not the most aesthetically pleasing storage it does the trick.
I have nine of them and will need more by year end...

I've always used a homemade battery sled, using some Radio
Shack parts and 3 'D' cells. Great battery life, more
life than the 1.2v 1300 mA batteries that came with the
unit, but not exactly the most planet-friendly approach.
Recently, my boss bought me a digi camera, which came
with a set of 1800 mA Sony 'AA' 1.2v Nickel Metal Hydride
batteries.
Question: Has anyone used these, and what kind of recording
time can I expect? No time to test before a long recording
gig.

Tom (and all),
These B-stock M1's are in perfect working condition. According to our
man at Sony they have ZERO hours on them. All were floor models used for
display purposes only and come with the same warranty as "new" M-1's. The
only thing that looks the slightest bit used on these decks is the box!! I
would highly recommend these to anyone considering purchasing an M1. We've
sold a bunch of these in the past 3-4 weeks and haven't had any problems
with them yet. Feel free to call us with any questions/concerns.
BWT...I'll offer up my Disco Biscuit 8/16/02 Central Park masters for Clone
for another couple B+Ps. If you didn't get in last time give me another

These DDS-2 tape drives can read and write audio DATs. They
have been sold as Archive/Conner/Seagate drives with the
model names of Python 4326/CTD8000/Peregrine. They come with
mounting rails and a faceplate that result in a 5 1/4 inch form
factor for mounting in a standard drive bay. They are SCSI
drives with the older 50-pin interface. These drives are used
but are in working condition.
They have the 01931-XXX 5AC firmware, which allows them to read
and write audio DATS at more than double speed using the dat2wav
or vdat packages. They are excellent for getting audio from a
DAT onto your hard drive, with .wav files broken up by start ID,
a perfect solution for converting to CD-R. Because they operate
at double speed, they are also excellent for cloning.

If I purchased such a drive, would it enable me to make digital copies of a DAT directly onto my hard drive? Could I use it to make clones?
