Each drawer easily holds about 100 CD-R discs in Heavy Tyvek CD envelopes one t a envelpe. I have started (slowly) to move all my CD-R discs to them. I have about 8 units, which should hold about 1600 CD-R discs. Once I fill them up, I'll get more. I have stacks of CD-R discs that I need to file away. I have ben using Case Logick boks, and I have 2 256 disc boks, 1 96 disc book, and 3 48 disc boks in brand new condition that I'd like to sell. These actually wrk pretty well if your collection is not that big, but they are bulky and limited. Keith ------------------------------ From: "Wayne D. I first got an original DDS-1 drive with an old SGI IRIS workstation I picked up at a ham fest. This drive had hundreds of hours on it but seemed to work well as a backup drive in the Sun Sparc workstation to which I transplanted it. I discovered Marcus Meissner's DATlib program and tried it out on my Sparc with success, but it was quirky. It would lockup sometimes and pretty much every rip I did from a tape of more than an hour or so had glitches in it. I though it was due to the age of the drive, and purchased a new DDS-2 SGI drive (like the one's that pop up alot here on DAT-heads) but was surprised to see that I got the same glitches from it as well. I've since learned that this is probably from weak spots on the tape. Your typical DAT deck has real-time error-correction and/or interpolation algorithms within its firmware whereas these DDS drives have audio as an afterthought and pretty much send the stream as it is on the tape. If they can't read a block correctly, they just spit out whatever happens to be in the buffer. Unlike their DDS mode they don't stop, rewind a little, and retry on errors. They just send the data realtime. These glitches are usually easy to spot in a wave editor as there is usually a spike well above the amplitude at that point in the file. You can use software to correct it (I think cooledit or soundforge have algorithms for this) or do what I do and use your normal DAT deck to run the tape up to just before the glitch, then record a few minutes via S/PDIF, then patch it over the bad spot. This can be a chore, but alot of times it still ends up being faster than realtime if you're in a hurry. You may get lucky too and have a tape that is pristine (as with most of my masters recorded on a new tape the night before), but I still prefer to just plug my deck into my S/PDIF and run it while I sleep. The audio drives do seem to allow a lot more slop in the tape though. I've had tapes that had regular digi-noise throughout (probably recorded on a misaligned deck) that came out perfect when ripped via the audio drives. Personally, I'd stay away from them unless you are a habitual techie kinda nerd like me. I now have a Sony DDS-3 SDT-9000 that is audio capable and it seems to do alot better than the Seagate/Archive/Python line, but to my dismay, it is not any faster than those. It is great in that it does data backups of up to 24 gigs on a single DDS-3 (identical dimensions as our audio tapes) tapes and is great for archiving music. Note also that I've never used any of the Windows tools on any of these, but have heard that both VDat and Dat2Wav are kind of quirky (or it might just be windows ASPI support, I don't really know since I don't use windows at all). I trudged along with DATlib for awhile, but have since started trying to write my own tools for these. Meissner's goals were quite different than ours. He wanted a replacement for the standard unix `mt' command that would handle audio tapes too, and wanted neat little play/record tools like the original SGI workstations (and current workstations as far as I know). Most of us are just looking to get the data onto our computers to burn CD's with, and possibly clone DATs. -- Wayne D. The adapter that comes with a new Inbox is an actual coaxial cable with RCA on one end and 1/8" on the other. The cable is so cheap that I wouldn't let my worst enemy patch with it. I used the optical out for 2 years while I was using minidisc and never had a single problem. You should never have an optical cable bind with a diameter smaller than one inch. Lots of mic stands inside. So Sunday I set up at my seats which were dead center in front of the sound board. I've got some pristine Trichromes. They had kicked out all the tapers before the show. I managed to remain unnoticed until midway through the Trichromes. I would lay down the mic stand between sets and set it up once again for each main stage set. But I had to keep it low. I've recorded many shows head height before. I dont know if it was the shape of the roof, or I was extra paranoid being right in front of the sound board and kept them just a few inches too low. My sound is really flat!! I'd love to set up a trade for a good quality set of Sundays shows... Trichromes through Other Ones. Check my list.. its not current. Got to try it out last weekend following Glen Phillips and Nickel Creek around the east coast. Ran Royer SF-12->Lunatec V2->DA-P1. Taped in a variety of settings, mostly club type settings, some near the soundboard some up almost on-stage, even once on the streets of New York for an impromptu encore after the Glen and Nickel Creek ran way past the allotted time in the venue. I can honestly say that it is the most accurate microphone I have ever heard. To all those who warned about serious reflection problems, etc. with the blumlein pattern; I don't know if it's the ability of the ribbons to resolve the detail needed or the lack of high-frequency phase issues but the image is rock solid when played back on headphones or any system capable of good imaging. A bonus I noticed is that the blumlein pattern is very conducive to surround sound recording. The crowd noise which was picked up by the rear lobes flows nicely from the extreme sides of the image to the rear of my room when played back in surround, at that point the crowd level / room ambiance is variable by adjusting my rear levels. One other aside is that due to the "low output" of ribbons I was worried about providing enough gain, but this was not an issue. At the unity gain level of my DA-P1 (near 7) to get -3db peaks I ran the V2 around 35db gain. All in all I am very happy with my purchase and finally found a mic which I will own forever (I still may add a few more to the collection but you won't see this up on eBay in the future). I have uploaded some samples in mp3 192kbs format to my online drive. Mike tapentrade@aol.com ------------------------------ From: Greg Teltschik Subject: Re: DAT-heads Digest #436 Date: Mon, 19 Aug 2002 20:56:02 +0100 Unless you go back to the venue and ask the soundguy, I'm not sure you'll ever figure out 100% what it was. It sounds like one of the pieces of equipment was in standby or pause mode and patched into that aux as well. It reminds me of my portable CD players that beep every few seconds when the unit is on pause. Laptops also can do something similar with a rather long period. So either the house CD player was on pause and beeping, or a piece of equipment used for the opening act was still engaged. Again, short of returning to the venue and finding the offending component, you may just have to chock it up to experience. I'd love to hear if someone knows something more definite.
