Date: Sun, 1 Sep 2002 16:41:08 -0400 I always use the LINE input of my D7.....totally eliminates brickwalling, eliminates any additional noise or distortion that the mic preamp may contribute, and I've never had a problem getting enough levels (I record mostly loud rock shows, usually stealth) with either a set of generic condenser capsules or Nak 300's....of course this wouldn't work for acoustic music, but you wouldn't run into brickwalling in that situation anyways...... thanks for the posting, john e. bogus ------------------------------ From: Mark Mayhle Subject: Re: Brickwalling Solutions.... I used to do this too, at Len's recommendation, but didn't care for the sound. I'm not sure if it reduces the high frequency response or what, but tapes sound better to me using an attenuator and Mic in. Just another opinion... -- Mark Mayhle mark@mayhle.com ------------------------------ From: Scott Goodwin Subject: D8 Brickwalling, revealed Date: Sun, 1 Sep 2002 17:32:18 -0700 I got some good responses to this post, and I'd like to publicly say thanks very much. I just finished a Rule #5-related experiment with the mics and would like to report my results: The Rig: Core LCBs > (at times) Battery Box (which I made and know to work well, flat response) > D8 Source: Vinyl, Charlotte 3/02 SBD > DAT > CDR Setup: Mics hanging off speaker tops, DFC on speakers, 1" out: Sony CD > Proton 1100 preamp > Proton AA1150 amp > Paradigm Titans / Fried 4B passive sub. Volume = Club show volume Tests: LCB > Battery box > Mic input (low sens setting) > rec vol at 3.5/10 > levels showed at -12 dB peak Result: Brickwalled. Big time. LCB > (no batt box) Line in > rec vol at 10 > levels at - 20 dB max but moving Result: Nothing / low level clicking. LCB > B Box > Line in Rec vol back to 3, levels @ -8 to -12 dB Result: Perfect LCB > Mic In (low level, no batt box, rec levels set at '3' on rec vol knob) Result: Brickwalled. Big time. YMMV, although I don't know how! Seems the line is the method, but requires mic phantom power for the CSB family of mics.. Hope this helps everyone! SWG WOB Tax: This Vinyl show is just plain sick. Thanks, Mark ------------------------------ From: "Gary Davis" Subject: re: Brickwalling CSBs>D8 mic input Reply-to: gdavisloop@earthlink.net Date: Sun, 1 Sep 2002 20:14:11 -0700 This has been covered many times, but it's generally better to use the Line Input with a D7/D8 and CSBs, especially for loud music. I usually set the level between 7 and 10. Sometimes (for softer loud music - ie Nels Cline w/o a PA), the recording level is rather low even at 10, but I think it's better to amplify the DAT later than to take the noise from the D8's mic pre-amp, and, of course, you don't have to worry much about brickwalling or going "over" ! --Gary ------------------------------ From: "john e. bogus" Subject: Poobah is still around and is taper friendly! Date: Mon, 2 Sep 2002 00:38:13 -0400 I recently discovered from the Monster Records website that the eastern Ohio band Poobah is still around and is about to have all their self-released albums from the 70's resissued on this label....not wanting to wait for Monster to start handling the current releases, I contacted guitarist Jim Gustafson to see if he would sell me the CD's by mail immediately.....I'm informed that Poobah is definately taper friendly, so chalk up another band to the list of Bands That Allow Taping! Upon discovering that the band has been around and still playing in eastern Ohio all these years, that of course begs the usual question.......has anybody onlist taped this band? If so, I'd REALLY like to hear from you! Anyone going to their show tomorrow night? If anyone in eastern Ohio is sitting on tapes from this band, you'd really make quite a few people happy by sharing..... Thanks for the posting.... john e. bogus ------------------------------ From: "Winnie" Subject: Denecke AD-20 modifications. Date: Mon, 2 Sep 2002 02:40:13 -0400 I'm starting to get mail in response to my for sale post. Sounds like a few Denecke AD20 users may be interested in increasing the size of their knobs. Sounds like the penis enlargement spam email... anyway... back on topic... Here's how I got READABLE gains on my AD20 that I could also easily manipulate. At your hardware store they usually have a bunch of drawers or boxes filled with small parts. Cotter pins, rings, special washers. I bought two knurled knobs that were made to press fit onto the heads of cap screws. They are used to make your own "finger tight" fasteners from cap screws. If you dont know... a cap screw has a cylindrical head that is usually knurled on the outside and is used with an "allen wrench", "hex key" tool. The knobs on the AD20 look just like the heads of cap screws, minus the hex socket. Since cap screws have a hex socket, these knobs have a plug that fits into the hole. You need to remove the plug, using the tool of your choice :-). The knob will now slide onto the AD20 mini gain knobs. You need to glue them on. The knobs are about 1/2" dia. Maybe 5/8". I printed gain markings "0 thru 9" and "hash marks" onto some adhesive backed labels using AutoCAD. Turned the gains all the way down.. and applied the adhesive labels aligned to 0. Remember that the gains dont turn a full 360. Using AutoCAD, it was relatively easy to configure the spacing. Now I have easily read gain pots on My AD20. Sounds like a lot of work. It was really quite easy... takes a long time to explain. Another easy modification is to get rid of the LARGE! XLR to mini adapter if your running a stealth rig... battery box type mic setup. Open the AD20. The XLR's are plugged into the board with a ribbon cable terminated by a multipin connector. Get another connector and ribbon cable at radio shack. There is room near the battery end to add another 1/8" mini plug for the mics rather than use the XLR balanced inputs and a large "Y" adapter. Of course.. if you run a different set of mics for "open" recording scenes, it's probably easier to use the Y adapter rather than have to open the case and switch the cables from mini-unbalanced mic jack to the XLR jacks. But then again... if your trying to stay light and small, using the belt clip with the AD20 for exampe.. getting rid of that bulky Y might be worth the time it takes to switch the cables. Good Luck! Mathias ------------------------------ From: Scott Goodwin Subject: Core Brickwalling, final Date: Mon, 2 Sep 2002 10:12:46 -0700 Thanks again for all the input, gang. I'd like to point out that, in case you didn't read the results of my testing which I posted yesterday, using the line input without a battery box DOES NOT WORK. So the suggestions of "just use the line input" are not a viable solution. Use line and a battery box for the Cores works very well. Every other combination of input and battery box did not work. I've got a circuit diagram for making attenuators, should anyone want it. Don't know if it works, but I'll know by tonight, and they should cost about a buck at the most.
