However, don't give up hope... > Yes, my experience is this - Radio Shack NiMH are 9V when charged, and the sticker says "9V 150mAh". A "9V" NiMH bought from Jameco (electronics parts mail-order place), with brand name "Millenium", is about 8V fully charged, no load, and the sticker on it claims 7.2V 150mAh. An unpleasant surprise. So, radio shack sometimes does have better stuff... Also, I remember a Consumer Reports article from a few years ago where they tested various alkaline batteries and were surprised to find the for many manufacturers the "D" didn't last any longer than the "C". Cutting them open, they found that the "D" was just a "C" cell in a larger case. But radio shack's "D" was a true "D". So this is a word to the wise for those building battery packs from "D" cells. I had no real issue with my deck being used, losing a tape or batteries. I was fully aware that I was stealthing and that taping was not permitted. My point in the original post was to describe my experience taping at the Birchmere which was on topic. Whether or not it was reflected in my original post I think I have a pretty decent sense of humor about the whole thing. I think enough of here can fantasize about getting your deck on the board for one of your favorite but anti-taping bands. I thought it extremely ironic that my deck which I thought would be stealthing was hooked to the board and used by the band. Man would I love to have that tape. I think we have had enough debates about the ethics of stealthing on this list and others. If you've paid attention to the debate here or anywhere else it's pretty obvious where Keith stands. That's fine with me but I'm just sick of hearing about it here and everywhere else. I'd rather read those DAT drive for sale posts over and over than get into this again. I felt the attitude that came out in Keith's post towards me to be off of the topic at hand, just a little too intense, and a real drag. Mark Lynn From: Keith Bode Subject: Re: Taping at Birchmere Date: Sat, 07 Sep 2002 12:19:05 -0700 Just one question of the poor, mistreated, individual, who had their taping rig taken away at Birchmere. Did anything tell you taping was not permitted, like your ticket? Did something tell you taping was permitted? If you got your rig taken away, and used by the staff, I guess that may be the price of assuming you have a right to tape where it may be clearly warned taping is not tolerated. Interesting how that was never mentioned. If you can afford a portable rig, you can afford aa tape and some batteries to go to someone else. I don't know if you were advised in advance of taping being permited or not, but I suspect you were. Keith Subj: Re: Birchmere (for DC/MD/VA tapers) Date: 9/6/02 3:31:53 PM Eastern Daylight Time From: Comnaround To: dat-heads@datheads.phish.net The Birchmere is one of the most anti-taping places I have ever encoutered and also the only place I've been busted. I was taping NRBQ and was turned in prior to the show by either the wait staff or another concert goer. To make this an even bigger slap they took my deck until the end of the show and actualy hooked it up to the board and recorded the show on my tape before giving me the deck back at the end with low batteries and no tape. Can we say OUCH!!! The new Birchmere or Birchmere bandshell I think as it's called is bigger and there is a dance floor in front of the stage and it's a lot easier to tape. My bust aside I dislike this place for their strict old school no taping policy, expensive ass craapy food, expensive beer, and the old general sit down and shut up vibe of the old place. Anyone want to trade NRBQ from the Birchmere or any other venue drop me a line. bwt:NRBQ:Bircmere July of 1995 Sonic DSM 5 Omnis->D7 On DAT or CD ------------------------------ From: Tony Amenta Subject: FS: Sonic Studios DSM Microphones + Denecke PS-2 Date: Sun, 08 Sep 2002 16:43:05 -0400 My visa payment is due for my the Apogee Mini Me and I have decided to part with a couple of items that I figured a dat-head might be interested in. Tony ------------------------------ From: "john e. bogus" Subject: Keith Bode / Digest #459 Date: Sun, 8 Sep 2002 17:52:22 -0400 In response to Keith's post in Digest #459, I have to speak in defense of the busted taper: Just one question of the poor, mistreated, individual, who had their taping rig taken away at the Birchmere. **Keith, after the word "mistreated", you have an extra comma that shouldn't be there.....you obviously can't count very well either, as you continue by asking more than one question.... Did anything tell you taping was not permitted, like your ticket? **Probably....that's why the taper was stealthing, wasn't it? DUH..... Did something tell you taping was permitted? **Probably not....that's why the taper was stealthing, wasn't it? DUH..... If you got your rig taken away, and used by the staff, I guess that may be the price of assuming you have a right to tape where it may be clearly warned taping is not tolerated. **One would assume that being busted for stealthing would get you kicked out of the show, asked to take your equipment back to your car and allowed re-entry, or have your tape and / or batteries taken away from you....that would be a reasonable assumption. But to assume the venue and / or band's staff has a right to use your equipment after taking it away from you is not a reasonable assumption by any means.... Interesting how that was never mentioned. **Exactly, that is the point.....this taper did NOT mention to the venue staff or the band that they had permission to use his equipment after taking it from him. If you can afford a portable rig, you can afford aa tape and some batteries to go to someone else. **The word "a" is spelled "a", not "aa". This statement may be true, but how do you know that this taper did not spend his last dollar getting into the show? Maybe we all aren't as rich as you are Keith, that we can afford to give away batteries and tapes.....how often do YOU give away your batteries and tapes? Since you're on this list and therefore probably own a DAT deck, how about if I assume that YOU can afford to send ME a fresh set of batteries and a sealed blank? I'll be glad to give you my PO box number if you want to put your money where your mouth is..... I don't know if you were advised in advance of taping being permited or not, but I suspect you were. **So what? When it says on your ticket or a sign in the venue "no cameras or recorders allowed", the translation is: "expect to run stealth if you want to get this show on tape"...... Keith, your post does a beautiful job of showcasing your mentality.....I wish you luck in getting anyone to trade with you. You should attach your post to your resume in the future when you apply for jobs at nazi venues like the Birchmere and places of similar ilk. I'll bet you have a great tape collection, with every recording being sanctioned by both the performer and the venue, right? Put your money where your mouth is, Keith, and mail all your stealth tapes to the staff of the venues at which they were recorded....be sure to include a fresh set of batteries.... Now a couple questions of my own: 1) Why didn't the taper in question demand his equipment back and leave the show? 2) Who would want to tape anything at this venue in the first place? I've never heard (yes, I live in the general area) of anything good playing there.....I'll bet there has never been a guitar solo played on that stage.....what a waste..... If venues treat their patrons that poorly, BOYCOTT THEM and see the band somewhere else! Being lucky enough to live in an area of high population density, I find that a band will usually play at several venues within a two hour drive and can select the venue that presents the least amount of hassles to tape in.... Thanks for the posting, john e. bogus ------------------------------ From: "Chris M." Subject: Converting LP's > CD Date: Sun, 8 Sep 2002 15:01:45 -0700 (PDT) Hi, my dad has a buddy who has a nice, old, and rare LP collection. He'd like to be able to convert some to CD to make a few mixes and what not. I tried a few of them by going LP player > RCA>eight-inch analog cable > Sharp MT-99 MD.**(see note below). Well it sounds alright (I have a digital soundcard and a MD player with dig. output, so I converted it to CD), but I'm wondering if there's a better way to do it. I was thinking since we are amateur hobbyists (and he has no digital equipment at all, but I'm supervising his purchases), he could get an outboard A>D converter like the one shown here: http://www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-bin/gold/category.cgi?category=570&item=SP-AD2000&type=store He could then get a Zoltrix Nightengale digital soundcard for $30 and there you go, a decent set-up. Now for people who know more about this stuff, do you have any suggestions as far as him purchasing equipment? Maybe he could go LP player > home DAT Deck > dig. soundcard? Or even LP player > outboard A>D > Stand Alone CD-R Deck? This brings up another question, if he was to go find a way to go into the computer, would it be a good idea for him to get like, CEP and do some noise reduction? Any suggestions AT ALL will be gladly accepted. :) **Ok, when I was going LP Player > Sharp MT-99 MD something weird was going on. I had the RCA>eight-inch analog cable. I plugged the two RCA's in the output of the LP player and the eight-inch end into the Line-In of my portable MD recorder. but I picked up no sound. I had to go in through the Mic-In where I did get a sound. Why is that? Would I be better off using LP player > amplifier(one from my dad's home stereo system or something like that) > MD? Thanks!!! :) ===== Check out my site: http://www.geocities.com/chris_83_01/ChrisDMB.html __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo!
