Well, if you are serious, then I am going to give you an ethics lesson you
idioit. People like you who sell tapes are the reason more artists don't
allow open taping in the first place. I don't stealth tape because I don't
have the patience for it. I've been able to convince some artists who don't
usually allow taping to let me tape, but it can be difficult, and their
first question is usually, "Is it for commercial purposes?" And they ask
that because they don't like people like you ripping them off. Why don't you
take your sorry ass attitudes over to e-Bay? Either that, or grow up.
Stealthing is one thing, but selling the tapes is so beyond fucked-up that
you will probably reincarnate as a parasatic fungus, because that certainly
would be a better reflection of what you are.

yes, qotsa allows aud taping... taped the pittsburgh
show a few days ago with no hassles at all, other than
the occasional person trying to use the micstand as a
support device... try and find the soundman (Hutch)
before the show, if you have any problems drop his name
at the door... video may be allowed as well, tho could
depend on venue policy? great show!

My hats off to all that have responded to all of the "keith, ethics" post. I
assume that most of the people on this list tape shows & that most of us have
beliefs that selling these recordings is wrong, however, because I have my
beliefs does not mean that I am right or lily white either. I stealth a large
amount of shows & have been taping for alot of years. I am fully aware of what
I am doing, I am of (a somewhat) sound mind, and I am sometimes a little self
righteous, and something that really gets to me is another self righteous
person preaching to me about the ethics of something that I am fully aware of.
I reminds me of the cause of more killing since the beginning of time,
self-righteous people who believe so strongly in something that they will kill
in the name of god. Here is my self-righteous belief: we all on this list know
where the recordings that we trade come from, if you like it: enjoy it, if you
don't: please keep it to yourself or just go away! Thanks for listening to my
rant, I feel better now.
Now on to something more important, Does anyone have any recordings of "The
Blind Boys Of Alabama?" STEALTH OR NOT, I have about 2800 shows to choose from
in return.

Subject: Grateful Dead and Related Bands Dats Offer - Round 8
Date: Mon, 9 Sep 2002 08:12:38 -0700
Hi,
This is Round 8 of my Dats for CD blanks offer.
Since 1997 I have traded dats, primarily Grateful Dead. I am converting my
dat collection to cd. This is the 8th and final batch. I will not break it
up into smaller batches so please don't ask. Round 8 goes to one person.
If someone wants to get a quick start in the GD and related band dat world
this is a great way to do it.
Dats are Maxell labeled, Maxell unlabeled, or Sony DDS. Some are 60m, some
are 90m. All have printed j-cards with song lists, lineage, etc.. Lineage
is as it was provided to me at the time of trade. Caveat emptor, these are
great tapes, however, they may have the occasional anomaly. I acquired them
primarily through trades on BUDD, Deadlists and other credible sources...
The following 66 shows reside on 60 dats. Several shows are filler on tapes.
Several of the dats have filler not listed in this posting.
I'll accept five (5) Taiyo Yuden blanks for each dat. This totals 300 cdr
blanks. At .30 cents/CD blank the exchange is well below current market
prices
for new dat blanks (as published at various sites, including TTapes.)
I will pay postage to ship the dats to you for continental US only.
If interested, please use the following in the subject field: Grateful Dead
Dats Offer - Round 8
Thanks.

Keith,
I dont know what kind of music you are listening to, but if you prefer to
listen to live music, as many of us do, your tape list must look something
like this:
Phish 500 shows
String Cheese 300 shows
Galactic 347 shows and counting !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Widespread 500 shows
Moe 460 shows and counting!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Grateful Dead 3 shows
Bob Dylan 1 - the "bootleg" series
and 1000 shows from other "taper friendly" bands that non datheads/tapers
have never heard of.
if we weren't out there taping the hard stuff while you and your bong chill
in the back 40 section there'd be a lot less for everyone to listen to.
Why would you try to embarrass this guy for going through the difficulties
of recording a good show? we have to deal with tattletales, having to pee,
and major stress - and moretimes than not - we trade the better recordings
away. the guys in the first 20 rows of the uptight - in demand shows and the
sneaky guys at the clubshows are the ones to be praised, not the masses of
taper geeks who run expensive rigs side by side, making nearly identical
tapes well outside the sound pressure zone.
i am not saying its "bad" to be a section guy. many of us started
there....(and i am a taper geek too, so dont get mad at that) but the fact
that this guy is willing to tape outside of the box should be recognized as
a labor of love and nothing less. he does not deserve to be belittled.

Just one question of the poor, mistreated, individual, who had their
taping rig taken away at Birchmere. Did anything tell you taping was
not permitted, like your ticket? Did something tell you taping was
permitted? If you got your rig taken away, and used by the staff, I
guess that may be the price of assuming you have a right to tape where
it may be clearly warned taping is not tolerated. Interesting how that
was never mentioned. If you can afford a portable rig, you can afford
aa tape and some batteries to go to someone else. I don't know if you
were advised in advance of taping being permited or not, but I suspect
you were.

Date: Mon, 9 Sep 2002 12:00:12 -0400
It's tearing me up, this whole Birhcmere rap, so just a quick flash....it
wasn't always like this, ya know. I have 5 or 6 shows (and access to
more!!!), cassette of course, that were taped at the birchmere by my friend
Kevin Preuss (K, get in touch man), using Naks and a D5. i'm hoping someone
is willing to clean these up and convert them to CD.
These tapes constitute the bulk of my foundation in bluegrass music:
>Tony Rice Unit - Jan 1989
>"Superpickers" (Bela, SamB, JerryD, Tony, AlisonK, MarkS) - April 1989
>John Hartford Band - 1990
>Doc Watson - 1990
>Norman Blake (w/ Nancy)
>New Grass Revival (w/ Bela and Sam)1989
I got these from Kevin in 1997, and then moved to Atlanta for 6 months,
where i easily found lots of folks who loved to pick (and wanted copies of
those tapes), so they are circulating somewhere.
I mention this because I take my music pretty seriously, and if not for
these tapes, made at the Birchmere, I would not be into bluegrass like i am
now. If anyone has the time/interest to convert the above mentioned shows
from cassette to CD, I can send them to you ASAP. I'd love to preserve
these and reseed to the list; apparently, we won't be getting any more
Birchmere shows anytime soon :) they are all masters, but have some serious
wear.
And yes, Tony did play at least 1 solo (per song) on that stage. and yes,
keith was not in the best of moods on his reply to the original post.
WOB tax : due to lengthy post, I'll take as many want in on ...
Sam Bush, Russ Barenberg, Jerry Douglas, Edgar Myer - "Be Here Now" saloon,
Asheville, NC. 1996. Thanks to Jeremy and etree, I can offer this on CD or
shn. (2 discs either way) The sound quality is so good on this, it gives me
chills (especially Edgar, whose bass is "in the room" with you on this CD).
if you've got a server, i can upload. Highly recommend this show.

I am not going to debate this on list. I have no stealth recorded
shows, that I am aware of, except a dead show or 2 the Fillmore East
crew patched a reel to reel deck into the wiring. I also have the last
Dead run at the Fillmore East, which the Dead's crew allowed someone
Board access to record the shows on a Reel to Reel. I also have
virtually no AUD recordings. Although I know virtually all the Dead
Soundboard shows in circulation were stolen from them, to be technical,
and I have a lot, oh well.
I have plenty to say about the personal assumptions and comments that
were said to me on list. I am not going to air them on list. This is
getting to be a flame war, and I am not going to write about anyone else
on list, just me.
I usually don't trade at all anymore. I get on some tree's here and
there, and I act as a branch. I will do some B+P's for people at times,
and I will ask for B+P's at times. Most of the rest of what I've done
with music over the last 2 years, is spread music that hasn't been
widely spread, if at all and spread it. I have a show I am working with
a little when I get a chance, that will be circulated on another list.
I did get the DAT for it doing a B+P or trade on this list, and I will
be making it available in CD format. It is an artist who died 22 years
ago, and I really don't know what his family's trading policy is, which
is why it will get minimal circulation. I do know I have bought about 5
CD's of his since then, and will buy more.
As far as Birchmere is concerned, I don't have a clue what the venue
looks like, or who else plays there, but I do know Bill Kirchen and
Commander Cody played there together a few months ago. I don't like
everything Kirchen is into, but there are very few with his ability to
rip a lead on a Telecaster. The list of piano players equal to
Commander, from what I have heard, is really short, if there is a list
at all. There's other kinds of music played on a piano, but I've heard
very few if any equal Commander Cody playing Boogie. If I get back to
the East Coast this winter, and Kirchen and Cody are playing at the
Birchmere together, I would go from Patterson, NY to see the show.
Now I have one comment about what was said about me. One of the
comments about me related to my typing and grammar skills. I am not a
clerical worker. If I was writing a major paper, all of that crap would
be corrected. This is a forum for ideas, not a creative writing class
given by someone AR in that area. Sorry for the misplaced commas and
crap. Having Multiple Sclerosis my muscles don't always do what my
brain wants.
If anyone cares to flame me, please do not subject the list to it.
