Date: Wed, 11 Sep 2002 13:25:39 -0600 I'm sure you'll get a variety of responses, so here's mine. I started out with Minidisc and when I finally got a set of mics I went for the Sound Professionals Premium AT Cardioids (AT-933s). They are very stealthable, and to my ears still sound pretty nice. I also got a battery box to go with them (also from SP) and this is a must for anything that could get a little loud. I made a mini t-bar so I can put them in all the usual near-coincident configurations (ORTF, NOS, etc). They also fit nicely inside Croakies if I want to stealth. I still use them when I'm traveling light or trying to be unobtrusive, and they go well with my M1. The mics and battery box (don't bother with rolloff if you get the cards) come in well under your budget, and the t-bar can be made for under $5. You can also get different caps for these little mics, so you can run them as omnis, hyper cards, or even shotguns. A great value. (and no, I don't work for SP) Matt > ------------------------------ > > From: Scott Goodwin > Subject: Best "beginner" mics? > Date: Wed, 11 Sep 2002 13:03:48 -0400 > > I just heard two recordings made from the same stand using two different > sets of mics, and I am now bound and determined to buy a decent set of > inexpensive mics. > > Yes, I know the two ideas, "good", and "inexpensive", do not usually live > together. > > I would like to spend $400 or less, and used vs. new doesn't matter to > me. Date: Wed, 11 Sep 2002 14:40:05 -0700 I received the best advice on this topic and i recomend you get: AT831 mics .. (aka SP-CMC-2) here: http://www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-bin/gold/category.cgi?category=search&item=SP-CMC-2&type=store only $109.00 for DELUXE AUDIO TECHNICA CARDIOID STEREO MICROPHONES. Great for stealthing, and for only an extra $20 get the mini clips. If you need a great Batt. box get this: SP-SPSB-1: http://www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-bin/gold/category.cgi?category=search&item=SP-SPSB-1&type=store for only $59.00. Get the Bass roll off setting modification for another $20, and you're set. I have used the AT831 mics stealthed in a backwards mesh hat, and it got unbelievable good results. just 'point' them at the speaker stacks, and you're set. you can blow more money, but i just highly recomend these mics. the best quality for so little of a price. I hope that helps and enjoy the live recordings! Tyler << Subject: Best "beginner" mics? Date: Wed, 11 Sep 2002 13:03:48 -0400 I just heard two recordings made from the same stand using two different sets of mics, and I am now bound and determined to buy a decent set of inexpensive mics. Yes, I know the two ideas, "good", and "inexpensive", do not usually live together. I would like to spend $400 or less, and used vs. new doesn't matter to me. I will use them primarily for folk/pop/jamband shows and would very much like it if they were in any way stealthable.>> _________________________________________________________________ Join the world’s largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ From: "Chris Rees" Subject: sony mic help.... If you like indie'ish music you'll like them. If you like Dylan type music (you know.. kinda folky), you might like them. Anyways, they're pretty open taping although they have no official policy. As long as they aren't filming for a documentary that night they should let you set up a stand and/or pull from the sbd if you ask nicely. If not, you can always stealth. They probably won't mind. Tickets are usually only $10 as well. If you plan on taping them or would like more info, please contact me at pzane@hotmail.com. I may spring for a ticket if you have a nice rig or plenty of masters to trade for a copy. I was going to post the dates here but it was way to long and didn't format right. It's difficult to predict when it will happen, but I've noticed it definitely seems more likely after playing 3D games. There was also one really bad driver revision where it happened all the time. I've just gotten into the habit of rebooting every couple of days which seems to keep it happy. I used to get occasional small skips/dropouts recording from DAT in CE2K which I believe were due to hard drive fragmentation. I created a fairly small hard drive partition that I use exclusively for recording...Cool Edit writes its temporary files there and I save the final versions elsewhere. Because the partition is always empty fragmentation is never an issue. This completely solved the problem for me. I seem to recall a project someone tried to put together to make manuals for DAT and other consumer electronic devices available for people who needed them, but I don't know if it ever made it or not. In the course of my job, I've recently had to do a bunch of programming to add Postscript stuff to some of my applications. I've become fairly knowledgeable in this area and decided to give a shot at making a manual from scanned images. The images were supplied by Ian Blumgart about a year ago in response to my request to DatHeads for a Denon DTR-80P manual. I've produced a nice PDF document from these files and you can check it out at: http://www.hoxnet.com/denon_dtr80p_manual.pdf (it's about 1.8 megs) Anyway, I'd like to entertain ideas on putting together some sort of project like this for other manuals. I'm going to give it a try with my Sony PCM-M1 tonight. I'd happily pay round-trip postage to anyone wishing to loan manuals to me for this. I can also take ftp uploads of scanned images too.
