Probably your DMA buffer size is low
Open panel of Audiophile and set higher.
I select latency 1600 samples and works ok

Hello. I just joined the group and although I am making my way through the
FAQ, I was hoping some experienced people could get me going in the right
direction.
I just purchased a Sony D8 dat. I have been shopping around for mics and
was very pleased to see that the ones I have been looking at, the Sp-CMC-2,
were mentioned favorably in the last digest. I will also be purchasing the
battery module from SP as well.
I am wondering about any other equipment that I might need to make a good
recording on a moderate budget. With the above equipment, would a mic
preamp be necessary or just a way to improve the sound?
As far as transferring, I want to be able to get the music onto my computer,
a Compaq Presario 7471. What is the best way to do this? Should I upgrade
my soundcard? What program is easiest to use to transfer (I have CoolEdit
2000)?
Any help would be appreciated since it is very obvious that I am very new to
all of this. Please feel free to email me with any questions you might have
and thanks so much!

Has anyone in the UK purchased a DAT from a US
supplier(eg Oade) and if so are there any
problems on warranty, power supply to battery
charger and most important how did they get
round(if they did that is) on not paying import
duty or VAT? Do you pay VAT or duty if it was a
"private sale"?Any help would be greatly
appreciated.After 27 years recording from
cassette to DCC to mini disc,I'd really like to
go up to DAT but at an affordable price-not more
rip-off UK prices.Thanks

Older receivers and amplifiers from the early-mid 1970's usually make great
power amps to drive your speakers, but usually contain lousy phono preamps.
The reason? The phono preamp section is usually really noisy. To
understand this fully, one must first understand signal-to-noise ratio (s/n
from here on) and dynamic range. S/N ratio is how quiet an amplifier stage
is (how much noise the gain stage contributes to the output signal),
measured in decibels (db from here on). Decibels are a ratio....doubling
the power mains a gain of 3 db.....double the power again and you have a 4x
or 6 db power increase. A good rule-of-thumb test of a power amplifier is
how heavy it is.....this implies a more heavy duty power supply that can
supply more power to the output stage on instantaneous signal peaks. This
results in an increase in what is called dynamic headroom. As an example,
one of my power amplifiers is a 1970 Sherwood S-8900. This receiver is
rated at 50 watts per channel and 6 db dynamic headroom, meaning that on
instantaneous signal peaks the amp can deliver 200 watts per channel without
clipping (distortion, or DC on the output signal). It weighs quite a bit
more than practically all amps/receivers rated at 50 watts per channel that
were produced 10-15 years later. The line input stages of the amp are rated
as having a 80 db s/n ratio.....this means that the noise floor (the hiss
and hum you hear with the volume cranked and no input signal) of the line
input stages is 80 db below the full rated output of 50 watts a channel.
But the phono input stage is rated as having a s/n ratio of only 65
db.....turning the input selector from the phono input to one of the line
inputs causes a drastic reduction in the noise level of the output .
Small-signal level low noise transistors and FET's were not developed and in
common use until the mid to late 1970's, but by that time, the days of most
amps/receivers having hefty power supplies were pretty much over. Generally
speaking, you do not get a good power amplifier AND a good phono preamp in
the same box (the exceptions are mostly very high priced products from the
1980's and later). Other than buying an expensive intregated amplifier, the
best way out is to get a good separate phono preamp for your vintage power
amp. As I bought it used and did not get a manual or specs, I do not know
what the s/n ratio of my AGI 511A preamp is, but it sure is a heck of lot
quieter than the phono preamp on the Sherwood.....I would guess it's
probably around 80 db, which is close to about as good as phono preamps ever
got. Another advantage of a separate preamp and power amp is that the
preamp usually gives you more line inputs to select from.....a big advantage
when you have 2 DAT decks, 2 cassette decks, CD player, turntable, 2 VCR's,
and maybe a DVD player all hooked into your stereo. For best results from a
phono input stage, nothing beats a high quality separate preamp.....next
best option is a decent receiver or integrated amp from the 1980's or later.
I also highly recommend older amplifiers (yeah, those old Marantz, Crown,
Pioneer, Bogen, McIntosh, etc. amps were and are still great) as power
amplifiers, but not as phono preamplifiers. To make the best transfer from
a good old analog record, your signal path should look like this: High
quality phono cartridge > well isolated (mechanically) belt drive turntable
> low noise (greater than 80 db s/n ratio) preamp > line input of DAT deck
or CD burner or soundcard. Remember to clean your record and cartridge as
well, this will help to preserve your records and also reduce surface noise.
Long live vinyl!

As far as I know he still allows board, stands and video. He made it sound
like he enjoys it when people tape him. If you can talk to him before/after
the show and send him a tape/video. I've always had no problem talking to
them before the show and they let the venue know that I would be bringing in
gear and that it was ok.
hope this helps,

Actually, AT&T, Cingular and Voicestream are the primary carriers going to
GSM. Verizon and Sprint remain solidly committed to CDMA technology. At
some point in the future (much further out than pundits will have you
believe) we will move to "3G" cellular, which is mainly going to be CDMA-based.

Technical explanation of US cell phone standards, companies and
implementations follows. Skip this email if this bores you.
I spent a number of years working with each of the major phone companies in
the US as they first implemented Pre-WAP (HDML) phones, through the
implementation of WAP and to the point where everything got pushed to the
back burner as the high-tech companies who were their biggest data customers
all went bankrupt.
In the US there are currently 3 systems being used. Verizon and Sprint use
CDMA and are on their way to (eventually) implementing 3D in the form
CDMA-2000 or WCDMA, two similar 3G implementations.
T-Mobile (formerly VoiceStream) and Cingular each use GSM and have already
implemented GPRS in major metropolitam areas, which is a 2.5G solution
leading toward EDGE as its 3G solution.
AT&T is mostly TDMA and partially GSM. They have moved their GSM network
toward GPRS and will be converging both networks toward EDGE as a 3G
solution.
While all of these companies were moving rapidly toward 3G solutions in 1999
and into the beginning of 2000, the timetables have slipped as the
telecommunications industry took a huge downturn as the recession which
began in 1999 got worse through 2000 and into 2001. As things are starting
to recover now, look for te timetables to be spead back up as companies
start to increase their telecommunications budgets over the next fiscal
year.
When it has all finished there will be 2 competing standards, 3G CDMA
(either WCDMA or CDMA-2000) and EDGE. Each has its positives and negatives.
As it stands right now, CDMA has the clear advantage, as it can has 10x
the capacity of TDMA in the same bandwidth and a multiple over GSM as well,
although I do not remember the exact number.
The biggest problem here is the limited bandwidth in the spectrum. The 3G
networks could all have been implemented by now, but you can squeeze
somewhere in the area of 100 phone conversations in the same bandwidth as 1
3G data stream. That means that if everyone started using 3G and used it
about as often as they do now, a 200 minute plan would have to be about a
thousand dollars per month because every saturated cell, which in NY for
instance is every one of them) would have to be replaced by something with
100x the capacity.
In early 2000, AT&T was at 350% capacity in New York City according to an
R&D guy that I met with. They had a long ay to go just to get new capacity
for the existing voice customers before 3G data could even be considered.
That about does it for the boring lecture!
