The fewer or thinner the struts of the thing are the better, so as to minimize reflections, and the double protection of the mics own windscreens and the stretched nylon should really be able to 'knock the wind out of it'... (sorry, couldn't resist the chance for the pun...) Stan Smith ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ From: "Terry Berrett" <terrapin1@adelphia.net> Subject: Re: Limiting Wind Date: Sat, 14 Sep 2002 15:34:19 -0400 A friend of mine used this set up with surprisingly good results: Pick up an 'open' parabolic structure. He used the back half of an electric fan with the motor and fan blade removed. This left just a parabolic chrome metal lattice. Rig a setup whereby the mics are sitting inside the lattice with windscreens on. This may necessitate bending the lattice in the back so that the mics can fit thru it, and bending the lattice on the bottom so that the mic stand can pass thru as well. Make sure that the front of the mics are behind the most forward part of the lattice. Then run panty hose over the front of the lattice and as much of the sides as possible. The hardest part was getting the mics and the metal lattice to be attached and stable on the mic stand. The panty hose purportedly had no noticeable effect on the audio but did act as a suitable wind diffuser. Warning: be prepared while using this odd looking thing for the know-it-alls out there to come up and ask which brand of panty hose works best.... --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. From: "Stanley W. Smith" <swsmith@ix.netcom.com> Subject: Re: Re: Re: Limiting Wind Date: Sun, 15 Sep 2002 13:42:40 -0500 Nope, no joke... a fairly common solution in the touring theatre & musical world... Not only does it keep the actors from sweating out the capsules of the rather expensive body mics, and cut down on plosive and rumbling noises, it has little effect on the frequency response of the mic... (the usual loss of high-mid frequencies, but the close placement lets the proximity effect kick in hard, and it's not much of a problem in that application) The transmitter packs are similarly treated before use... nothing like actor-sweat inside a mic element or electronic circut board for corrosive effect and ugly noise potential... ;) Also, in a desperate attempt to keep a set of mics dry and running in heavy rain, gusting wind, and/or wet set location recording you can cover the mic and connector body completely w/ a condom... secure w/ a velcro tie or gaff tape (looks a bit odd, but WTF...it's not in the shot. ;) ) Stan Smith ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ From: David Nolan <LiveAir995@earthlink.net> Subject: Re: Limiting Wind Date: Sun, 15 Sep 2002 11:04:12 -0400 I swear to god this is not a joke - when I used to gather sound for radio news, we routinely used a dry condom over the end of the mike (no reservoir tip) if the mic was big enough... Amazing results in high wind situations... dave n --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). From: Keith Bode <t.tunakebo@verizon.net> Subject: Dynaco Preamps, vs newer recievers, amps etc. Date: Sun, 15 Sep 2002 11:46:40 -0700 Gd, I haven't heard of one of thse Dynaco Pre-amps being discussed in decades. My brother had one in the early 70's with 2 Dynaco mono tube Power amps, about 60 watts each as I recall. The Preamp was beat up, but it was very reliable, the power amps ate tubes at ridiculus rates. I believe Chris about the quality of the Dynaco and it's sound, but I do know there was one thing to watch out for on these. Dynaco made a complete unit and also a kit version. I would tend to stay away from one that was a kit version. I dn't know how to tell the difference in the finished products available today. I had a couple of High school friends wh tried building kits of the later integrated amp that was being sold in the early 70's. Neither of them worked right. I know the problem with one was my friend took a hit of acid, and sat down with a solderng iron, and finished it, but he swore he got it right. My question remains: Is there a problem with the 90's era recievers tape out using the MM and tape output, as there seems to be stated thee was with some earlier, 70's era phono and tape outs? I bought a Technics SLD-202 turntable a year ago. I have no records, as my entire collection was stollen in the mid 80's, and I only bought CD's after that. If anyone has a record that I could try to convert to digital using the SLD-202 Direct Drive with a Grado GF3 cartrige and a brand new stylus>Sony STR-D715>Tape Outs>ART DI/O A/D converter>Delta Dio 2496>wav>Shn, I would be very interested to compare, and give ters the opporttunity tto compare the sound quality to the set up Chris used. I would prefer an excellent condition 2 track stereo record to try this with. I would definitely return the record and the CD of it to whoever would be willing to provide a LP in excellent shape. From: Edward Davis <niceguy1222@earthlink.net> Subject: Gomez Taping policy Date: Sun, 15 Sep 2002 11:52:18 -0700 Hi, I was wondering if Gomez still allowed soundboard patches on this tour. If so, who should I ask for in case there are problems at the venue. Also, does anyone know their soundguy's name. Thanks, Ed -- "You're not going crazy Arthur. You're going sane in a crazy world." From: "William J. LaPier" <wjlapier@charter.net> Subject: HHB Portadat Question--- Date: Sun, 15 Sep 2002 16:42:07 -0700 well, i didn't think it would happen to me--famous last words. i bought a used portadat from someone who has sold stuff on this list in the past. the deck was supposed to have 36 hrs on the heads--reported to be in excellent condition. i thought i was getting a great deal! well, i got it and it doesn't work properly. and there is a small gold piece on the spdif output that is missing--i was told the rcas were in fine condition when i asked specifically about them. no response from the seller regarding this--yet. actually, my question is this--what does the "caution" message mean on these decks. i didn't get a manual, so i'm wondering if there is some sort of "reset". when i power up the deck and load a tape i get the word "caution" flashing in the lcd screen. now the inner lid can't open--wtf!?!? why would someone sell something in this condition and at the same time say there are no issues. btw, from what i was told by this person she was a phish and moe taper for awhile. i can't believe one of our "OWN" would do this. my bubble has been burst. this whole situation has been one huge bummer for me. so much for trusting someone you don't know--- i apologize for the rant. but i think some of those considering buying gear from this list and others need to be very careful. i've bought and sold my share of gear and never has this sort of thing happened. buyer beware! bill

From: Joshua <sprung598@yahoo.com> Subject: reducing wind noise Date: Sun, 15 Sep 2002 19:09:25 -0700 (PDT) > Any ideas on how to limit wind noise in outdoor venues? A very cheap and fairly effective way of reducing wind noise is to cut a swatch of acoustically transparent fabric (the same stuff they use to cover speakers) and cover the end of the microphone with it. Then, while holding the fabric in place put on your windscreens over it. This does dampen the high end of the recording a bit, but, as some one else mentioned, high-end solutions to wind noise are pricey. -Josh __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? From: "john e. bogus" <mallness@surfbest.net> Subject: more on phono preamps and specmanship Date: Sun, 15 Sep 2002 22:13:52 -0400 I think a person doing the transfer of records-LP's, 45's etc neeeds to weigh the condition of the records, and the desired use of the CD's produced against the ccost/benefit of getting the ideal equipment, such as external separate Pre-amps and A/D converters. **An excellent point! Few of us have the cash to blow on the "ideal".....the components that make the most audible difference are going to be those ahead of the A/D converter in the signal path.....unfortunately these days, the choice of available turntables and cartridges has narrowed considerably.....good luck to those shopping for anything but the most expensive gear or the cheapest junk for analog LP reproduction. I'm not sure why John specified using a Belt Drive turntable vs a direct drive. I know the Technics SL 1200, and it's varius versions have been the standard in both live music and I believe broadcast studio applications. I can't think of any reason why a belt drive would be desired over a direct drive, unless there is a chance of some rumbling from the direct drive. **I was speaking in terms of a general rule-of-thumb, to which there are, of course, always exceptions.....mechanical isolation from floor vibration and rumble is precisely why most belt drive turntables are the desired choice for a given price range.....the SL 1200 is one of the exceptions for sure! This is a GREAT turntable.....had them at a radio station I worked at some years back, and it has by far the best isolation of any direct-drive turntable I'd ever encountered. If I remember correctly, it was kind of pricey, but these days might be one of the best values for the money compared to the other choices on the market. As John brought up the s/n ratio of the older equipment, his post didn't address the s/n ratio of 90's era recievers, or integrated amps on their Phono inputs. I realize that in the 90's these inputs were put in, and in most consumer units the manufacturers probably doubted they would be used, but none the less were they improved, as IC boards became the mainstay of these products? **An EXCELLENT question.....anyone have the answer to this one? My personal guess is that the phono preamp stage in the 1990's went the same way as the PA stage did in the 1980's....from discrete components to "gain block" type IC's.....more cost effective to make, but hardly high performance. Maybe they went to "low-noise" FET input op-amps? Answer? Recommendations? Anyone? Thanks for the posting, john e. bogus

From: Bob Dobalina <bobdobalina22@yahoo.com> Subject: M1 eating tapes Date: Sun, 15 Sep 2002 21:21:09 -0700 (PDT) Thanks to everyone to responded to my first post inquiring about DPA mics. Now I've got another problem. I recently purchased a used M1 DAT to get into live taping (about a month ago) and more than once now its decided to eat the tape on me. When it does this, it will go into a loop where it displays that its Loading then Unloading the tape continuously. And when I open up the deck the tape will be out of the shell and wrapped around the inside of the deck. I don't think I'm doing anything wrong, but if anyone has some helpful advice or could tell me what the best way to go about getting this repaired would be, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Bob I'll start giving a BWT once I have taped a few shows and have something to trade :) __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! From: "Gary Davis" <gdavisloop@earthlink.net> Subject: Cleaning heads on DAT decks Reply-to: gdavisloop@earthlink.net Date: Sun, 15 Sep 2002 23:31:52 -0700 Routine cleaning of heads is not necessary and it's also not a good idea - dry cleaning tapes put excessive wear on the heads. Helical scan systems - where the heads spin at high-speed across the tape - are intrinsically self-cleaning. Normally, you should only use a cleaning tape if you are having problems, ie, a steady high error count on one or both heads. (If you don't have or can't access the error counter, the audible result would be constant noises in playback, or no sound at all). --Gary
