Hello Heads.
NPR is reporting all about silicone breast implant lawsuits, but implants seem more popular than ever in my town. Ha! That still cracks me up.
Meanwhile...
Time for my annual post in search of tapers who got any captures from David Bowie's 1997 Earthling tour.(WAAAAAY back in time, eh?) It was a tough capture-- mostly small clubs, tight security and all that.
While quite a few of those shows made it out, still more than 1/2 of the american tour is MIA.
If you or anyone you know taped this tour please contact me or drop me a line.
Here are the US dates that are still missing or where the existing ones are botched tapes:
September 06 Plaza of Nations Vancouver Canada
September 07 Paramount Seattle, WA (I know 5 Seattle tapers and no one got this?)
September 09 Warfield San Francisco, CA
September 10 Hollywood Athletic Club Los Angeles, CA
September 12 UA Amphitheater Los Angeles, CA
September 13 UA Amphitheater Los Angeles, CA
September 15 Warfield San Francisco, CA
September 19 Vic Theater Chicago, IL
September 21 State Theater Detroit, MI
September 24 Metropolis Montreal
September 25 Metropolis Montreal
October 03 Electric Factory Philadelphia, PA
October 07 Chili Pepper Ft. Lauderdale, FL
October 08 Chili Pepper Ft. Lauderdale, FL
October 12 Capitol Ballroom Washington, DC
October 13 The Supper Club New York, NY
October 15 Radio City Music Hall New York, NY
October 17 Aragon Ballroom Chicago, IL
See? A whole LOT of these are still missing!
There are a LOT of UK & EURO dates missing, too, if any of you out there in London, Germany or Spain managed to get to a show. Hope to hear from some of you on this. It's been 5 years and I still listen to these shows regularly, but have found them the most difficult things to acquire.
Thanks!

Anyone tape the Freedom Sings benefit at the Bluebird
in Nashville last night? Looking for all audio but
would easily settle for Steve Earle's set. E-mail for
a list...lots of Earle and other Americana.

The surprise comes with Phil Lesh. Even though he was snubbing
tapers at Beacon Theatre shows by not only putting them in the back,
but in the corner where the sound is poor, his policy did change in the
summer at the sheds. FOB taping was permitted, as long as mics
were 'head high'. Even heads of security would come to the gates
and announce that policy through a bullhorn.
Now Bob Weir is playing the Beacon soon, and I just got my taper ticket.
It's back to the older Phil Lesh trick of sticking us back in the corner. I wonder
if Bob is the overriding influence of where the tapers go for The Other Ones?
I agree with a some who say The Allman Brothers are one of the best. A most
unusual situation happened to me at a Saratoga, NY Allmans show this summer.
I was up front center (9th row). As I was setting up my mics (before the show
started) I had them about 7' up. A 'security guy' came up to me and asked if
that was as high as they go. I looked at him strangely and said no. He then
asked me to put them up as high as I could. WHAT? I asked him to repeat
his request a couple more times (as I'd never been asked that before), including
asking him his name. He told me his name and that he was the 'head of
production'. Wow....was I in heaven! That was a truly taper's dream. It worked
out great, as the people around me were chatty, but my stand was way above
their heads. True...being up that high (~13-14'), the 1" diameter mic stand was
now 'blocking'(?) the view of more people behind me. However, the larger part
of it (T-bar, clamps and mics) were not in the way of people right behind me.
Perhaps 50' behind me....yes. When looking at the top of the rig from that far
away, and when put in perspective those mics however, do seem smaller.
If only more bands and venues took that approach....

Subject pretty much says it all. I would be eternally grateful if anyone
could hook this up. I can offer CD's of the shows...as well as CD's of the
Hampton shows. Not to mention...your Karma would probably be safe for the
next couple of years for doing something so nice. So, if you can help me out

Lately when my friend and i have been taping with our Sony D7, and our tapes
are coming out a little scratchy. Also whenever we play it back or try to
convert it, the sound occasionally drops out and a bunch of diginoise occurs
at different spots. They aren't consistently in the same spot, so I don't
know what's going on. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks,

I've got a D7 witha Core Sound cable and a Mac G3 (OS 8.6). I've got an
Audiophile 2496 card in the Mac. What I want to do more efficiently is
capture audio from the DAT with the Mac, do very simple cleanup like fading
out applause, eliminating tuning between movements, stuff like that, then
burn CDs.
My question is, is there some simple software (preferably free or cheap)
for importing the audio digitally via S/PDIF? I mean, the Cakewalk software
that came with the card is HUGE and complicated, made to create 100 MIDI
tracks and whatnot. I've looked at many other audio editing programs, but
they lack the ability to import digital audio via S/PDIF. Even Digidesign's
Pro Tools can only use the Sound Manager, not the card's inputs.
Thanks.

Dear PHISH, ( JOHN, MIKE, PAGE , and TREY),
I am a long time Phish fan. I am sickened by the the fact that out of 30, yes 30 of my friends who tryied every way to get tickets to MSG and Hampton, not a single one of us recieved 1! But some how Ticketbastared and this www.ticketsnow.com (and you all should look at this site, type in phish, and see what happens!!!!!!!!!!)did ! I do hope you know that this is Highway Robbery at it's finest!!! I refuse to see Phish play for $3000.00 YES $3000.00. If you did not know that this was going to happen then SHAME ON YOU!!!! Instead of playing MSG, you could have play another festival in Fla., or somewhere else large enough so YOUR FANS , AND I REPEAT YOUR FANS, could all gather with the same chance to see the most anticipated return of truely a great band. You know that the majority of the people who recieved tickets for your upcoming shows , are NOT FANS, and stand to make much more MONEY than you wil. I'm not jealous that you make money at what you do, because YOU deserve the finacial reward for working very hard! This just takes the cake! So I guess that I'll just go see String Cheese instead, and thanks for the Music you have worked hard to bring so many people, and THEY will NOT get to see it !
Sicerly, Jesse D. Scott, first show was 12-5/6-92 Vic Th. Chicago, ILL , and those tickets cost me $24.00 for both shows. Do YOU remember those days? I DO!!!!!!

This rule sux. Yeah, I understand they want mics behind or next to the
board... ...I agree - ABB & SKB & JS and others are the taper friendly bands.
No
special tickets or secret handshake is needed. TOO should put the live =
shows onsale for charity like the Who did this summer to cut down on =
unathorized taping, IMO.
============================================================================
Excuse ME, but I am a little confused. I am primarily a stealth taper, however
I started out taping the Dead before there was a taping section. When those in
charge made the decision to create a taping section I was faced with several
choices, 1) be grateful that they were allowing us to tape & go with the flow.
2)decide to disregard the rules with the knowledge of the possible
consequence's & go for the phat tapes, or 3) choose not to go to the show at
all. As far as I can see, "THEY" still run the show & "THEY" don't have to let
us tape at all! I actually think that I should applaud attitudes like this
because if more people have attitudes like this than we will all be running
stealth rigs & more people will be understanding of how good it is to have a
band that in any way supports the minority of its fans as well as the
majority. As far as I can tell, taping is a priviledge not a right.....unless
of course you are stealth

you dont really think they are making up rules 'just for the sake of
rules' do you? Its MUCH easier for a band to not allow taping than it is
to allow it. and as soon as it becomes another headache the crew has to
deal with on tour, for them to continue to allow it shoows extreme
deadication and love for the fans. some of the normal issues they have to
deal with, ontop of putting on a normal show are:
- extra staff/training needed to inspect packs/gear at gate.
- extra liability by allowing packs and gear into the venue (especially
after 9/11)
- worry about copyright infringements from illegal duplication and sales
- and the *biggy*... deal with concerns from non-taper fans complaing
about having their seats commandeered or being surrounded by gear, or
being told not to yell etc.
(in fact, i have been told that recent notice from GDTSTOO was sparked by
an incident at Alpine involving people from the 'dead family' and some
stealth tapers who figured they had more of a right to be taping in seats
that belonged to those other people than those oother people had to sit
in their own seats.)

SSIA...
I'm of the opinion that if you are patching and ordering a tapers
ticket, you are robbing the masses of potentially good sources that
*could* have been *if* the guy with all the great gear would have been
able to score a tapers ticket.
if you use one of these high demand, short order resources for
patching...then you are being selfish.
Think about how fast the Alpine shows got out.! The circulation of this
pending tour has much more to do with the success of the tapers than
that of the patchers, so give us some breathing room please.
Its obvious that tapers tix will be tight. The rules have been laid,
and i plan on respecting them. Don't suck up these tickets just to
bring in your D8 while I have to leave $4k in gear in the trunk because
of it.
You know what would be funny? Everyone converging on the TS at show
time and finding that there are no microphones...just patchers.
