From: Scott/ Debra McPherrin <hippies@frontiernet.net> Subject: C'Mon...Really?... Date: Sat, 21 Sep 2002 20:58:25 -0500 is this for real?... are you actually trying to give us some "heads up" on Recording issues?... Grateful Dead recording issues? No wait...Other Ones Issues? obviously, you're a newbie (as we all were once)... so i'll go easy...=) my man, you have alot to learn...=) there will be as many, if not more FOB Tapers at these shows as any other... the shows are not gonna stop if some wookie gets busted taping FOB... these directives are sent out to try and keep people such as YOU from taping FOB... please leave this to the folks who know what they're doing... (and get out from behind the pulpit)... you'll be searching for the FOB's when these shows are done like any other...=) all due respect... ~scott From: ISTEIN2@aol.com Subject: "Taping is a privilege. Not a right." Date: Sat, 21 Sep 2002 16:04:45 EDT I'm not some right-wing person spouting party-line statements! The realization to me is that, "Taping is a privilege, not a right." Think about all the security issues involved here for venues in light of 9/11 events. Everywhere you go, you get inspected now. Sports arenas are one of the tightest security areas going. These places have insurance, and their premiums are based on how tight their security policies are. Now here come us taper dudes! We pretty much storm the doors when they first open the place. There are thousands of other fans behind us pushing to get in sometimes. We have to open up all our bags for inspection before going in. But, nobody else is allowed to bring in a bag or backpack, let alone tons of high tech recording equipment. We tapers have been pretty lucky that the bands think enough of us to give instructions to the venues well beforehand. What we are hearing from the band now is a reasonable solution to a potential security risk. The amazing thing I've noticed about tapers is the ease at which everyone gets along with each other. The important thing here is to immediately put the venues at ease when they see how professional and polite we are to everyone. I'm the first to admit that many people around me over the years have gone out of their ways to insure I get a good recording. These are ordinary people sitting next to, and around, tapers FOB. They don't have to inconvenience themselves, but they offer to anyway. I've never really had an issue with a fan, that everyone around me didn't have the same issue with. I consider myself very lucky to be able to publicly tape shows. I could make this a real long post, but I won't. I think it's most important that all tapers (remember, one rotten apple can spoil the whole bunch!) handle the upcoming taping situation with The Other Ones in a relaxed friendly manner. It's really up to us to insure we'll always be able to tape shows and events. Yours, Ira

Even Digidesign's Pro Tools can only use the Sound > Manager, not the card's inputs. Most cards come with a Sound Manager driver that allows you to use the card through the SM. With my Audiowerk card, I just open the Sound control panel and select the card's digital in as input and digital out as output. You may need to track down the full Sound control panel to do this, however. I believe 8.6 only installs the combined "Monitors & Sound" control panel, which lacks the I/O selection items. Check the "Apple Extras" folder or try a custom install of the OS. For recording, Pro Tools might work fine, once you have the input selected, but I personally have had great success with a freeware program called "Coaster". (Only once have I had any glitches, though I don't try to do anything else with the computer while transferring.) One tip: increase the memory allocation if transferring long blocks. Also, make sure the input gain is set to 1.0 to get bit-accurate transfers. -- Michael
From: Ben <jambandman2002@yahoo.com> Subject: Actions speak louder than words at the Town Hall - Bruce Hornsby Date: Sat, 21 Sep 2002 20:29:41 -0700 (PDT) Hello list, I attended Bruce Hornsby with Steve Kimock on guitar (opening act - all too short, Leftover Salmon) at The Town Hall in Manhattan last night. None of us would have been able to tape this fine show were it not for the generous contribution to the Union by Mr. Suicide Sound himself, Taper Todd Sniden. Todd singlehandedly enabled all tapers to set up rigs by forking over the exorbitant $800. This was a noble gesture as Steve Kimock and Hornsby sounded great in the room! He wanted me to let you know that if you are interested in kicking down to reimburse his "cause celebre" he would very much appreciate it. The tapes sound very good though and while I do not condone spending $800 to make things happen, I am in favor of the karmic balance of the universe. Todd has soundboards of the show and here is his email: SuicideSound@nyc.rr.com or you may use the forum to leave messages for Todd. From: Keith Bode <t.tunakebo@verizon.net> Subject: FS:DAT Cleaning Tapes Date: Sun, 22 Sep 2002 10:10:47 -0700 I got a god lecture on this before when I offere bcause dry cleaning tapes, although effective, are abrasive and can/will cause decreasse tape head life. So, in answer to Mathias question, yes Sony does make a ddifferent version called the DG15CL. It's 15 meters long, and should last about 15 cleanings. I have found a supply of them s I can pass them on fr $5 plus $1 shipping each in the states. Outside the US shipping would be higher. I would guess that most of the US members of this grup who use a dry head cleaner, use the Sony DG15CL. From: "Zach" <zach@funkytulip.com> Subject: DAT Liquidation Reply-To: <zach@funkytulip.com> Date: Sun, 22 Sep 2002 14:10:16 -0600 this would be a good start for a newbie...if there's any left. http://www.funkytulip.com/list.html total is 28 DAT's. mostly Sony's, but a few Maxells, and a Fuji or two. I'd prefer they all go to one person. I'd like a 100disc spindle of 80 minute Taiyo Yuden CDR's in return. That seems fair to me...they're going for $50 at Am-dig.com right now. If this is way out of line let me know. Peace, Zach
