If it miss loads it will still show A time and levels. A little trick somebody told me and it has worked for me amy times since. Turn on the light when the door is open. When you close the door and it miss loads then the light will go off while it is loading. If the light stays on you are good to go. If it goes out when you close the door, while loading, eject and turn on light and try again. I have had the light go out before. I reloaded and tape was just fine. Oh, a couple of times I have had to reload a couple of times before the light would stay on. Does the same trick work on a M1, who knows. jerry ------------------------------ From: "Tatina, Bill" Subject: ISO: Blues Fans / Tab Benoit 2002 Date: Wed, 25 Sep 2002 16:39:18 -0700 I have ton's of killer Tab From Colorado for Trade. When I first started into electronics in the early 1940's hearing aids used very small electron tubes with 1.5 volt filaments that drew only a couple of milliamps - they would run for days off a AA battery. The plates were at 22.5 volts or less. The tubes were the thickness of a small pencil and about 1 inch long. If you could find a few of those (or a couple of antique hearing aids) you could roll your own real small stealth tube preamp. In the late 1940's miniature tubes became available - and battery operated portable radios used lots of them. Again 1.5 volt filaments, but plate voltages were higher. Those should be a bit easier to find. ( These used a 7 pin socket, while the hearing aid tubes only had wires coming out of them - no base - they were soldered into the circuit.) A 1T4 would be a good miniature tube to use in a preamp circuit - it was very linear, and the filament did not draw much current. Good luck! (No - I am not interested in another project!) Cleve Svetlik, Cleveland, Ohio ------------------------------ From: Kurt Vogel Subject: Tube mic preamps in the field Date: Wed, 25 Sep 2002 18:37:55 -0700 (PDT) Glass audio volume 1, issue 1 has a brief article on building a vacuum tube preamp: http://www.audioxpress.com/magsdirx/glassaud/gabilist.htm There is a lot of information on designing and running tube gear off of batteries at Steve Bench's site at: http://members.aol.com/sbench101/ Sorta related in the area of portable/tube/battery-powered is the car-audio tube amp by Milbert at www.milbert.com. It is possible to run tubes in physically demanding conditions (heat, vibration) as long as you are using the right tubes. A stealthable tube mic preamp is on my "to-do" project list (meaning I should get to it around 2007...) If anyone here has built one I would love to hear about it! However, my friend was there two nights ago and she said that everyone was waved over by one of those metal detector wands. Does anybody have any tips on how one could get a D8 and a coresound battery box past these things? BUT...I do have an extra seat for the gig. The concert is a tribute for Timothy White called "Music to my Ears" or something. Sheryl Crow, James Taylor, Brian Wilson and Roger Waters will be performing, among others. Tuesday, October 8. Sec 129, 3rd row. The seat is $116 face, but I'd be happy to give it to someone who'll tape for me and give me the dat master. I suppose you should have something better than what I would use (CSB). I really just want to sit back and enjoy the show. Any super-experienced NYC tapers wanna do this? Keep in mind the conditions I mention in my 1st paragraph. Then again, I'm sure most of you get a kick out of the challenge ; ) E-mail me privately ASAP. best, Anthony ------------------------------ From: "Tyler Huff" Subject: suggestions for best transfers of MD -> CD transfers? Date: Wed, 25 Sep 2002 19:51:29 -0700 Just thought i'd get everyone's expert opinions before i buy anything. I tape with a Sharp MD, and want to now be able to transfer those MD's into my computer so i can make .shn's from the masters with optimal quality. Optical (digital) connections are key, correct? And because of this, i need to buy a stand-alone Mini-Disk home player/recorder with a 'Digital OUT' plug. To go with this, i need a soundcard with an Optical IN on it, correct? Is this a good setup to purchase?: Sony MDS-302 Standalone (old but good, and has the digital OUT) or Sony MDS-JE500 Standalone (This seems more common on eBay, and is the onle one in the JE series that has the Optical OUT) which one should i go for? Both just as good? These two are the only 'cheap' ones i can find with the Optical OUT. The Sony MDS-E10, E11, and E12 are too expensive for me. for the soundcard, i think i'll go with this: M-Audio Delta DiO 2448 not too expensive, and has the optical in that i need, right? Any thoughts on this one? *** Thanks for the help everyone. I can't wait to start transfering my own MD's. Jamie did extensive testing to see if the Nomad 3 could be a viable replacement for DAT. It wasnt. But his detailed efforts and subsequent postings caught the eye of the engineers at Creative. They contacted Jamie and with his help over the past several months have finally coded new Firmware that is bit for bit accurate, making the Nomad 3 an alternative to DAT recording!!! Jamie posted this announcement yesterday. I hope I've got the "terms" above correct. But if not.. the point is that its great to have people with his expertise hanging out on DATheads and Laptop tapers forums. It also is of note that people out in the industry watch our forums also. Efforts such as Jamies stand out and help us all. While I dont suggest that posts about the "human nature side" of life as a taper, concert goer, ticket hunter have no place here. It does seem that we would all benefit by having more posts in the vein of Jamies type efforts. If engineers and designers from the industry are to take us seriously as a knowledgeable and lucrative consumer group.. then we would benefit by staying on topic and lets talk taping and equipment, "sprinkled" with the "human factor", not overwhelmed by it. Thanks Jamie! And to all listers! The taping community is a great bunch of people!! Winnie PS...
