Subject: Nomad 3: Usage 4 Live Recording?
Date: Sat, 28 Sep 2002 15:01:42 -0700
I read with interest the recent postings about the firmware upgrades to
the Nomad 3, a unit seemingly designed to rip and store MP3s, enabling
it to record n wav format, adjust levels, and otherwise do live
recordings with microphones.
If anyone has used one in a concert setting, could you comment on your
operation and results compared to a portable DAT?
Thanks

Subject: Off topic, concert tickets, staying home and gate crashing
Date: Sat, 28 Sep 2002 15:34:49 -0700
How the hell does going to a concert without a ticket equate to gate
crashing, and why should I stay home if I don't have a ticket? I have
gone to shows, where I have had extra tickets and sold them in the
parking lot. Those guys who bought the ticket showed up to buy tickets
in the parking lot. I had extra tickets so I sold them. Where is the
problem in that?
In 6/2000 I went to see Bob Dylan open for Phil Lesh. I didn't bother
to buy tickets, because I really wasn't interested in seeing Phil. I
told my now ex girlfriend that I wanted to go. She said "We don't have
tickets, how are we going to get tickets?" I said "It's a Dead crowd,
we'll get tickets in the prking lot, and if we can't get tickets in the
parking lot, the show isn't sold out. so we can buy them there." She
said "Your nuts!". I said "I know I'm nuts, but I know we can get
tickets in the parking lot." I learned that in 30 years of going to
concerts. We got to Irvine Meadows, and within 5 minutes of getting
there we had a pair of 6th row seats, directly in front of the left
stack, for face value.
I have snuck into a couple of concerts when I was young, like 18-21, but
I have never crashed a gate, or climbed a fence, at least not one more
than 6 or 8 feet, and none in over 25 years. Personally, I have never
been to a show where I couldn't havve bought tickets in te parking lot,
or in front of the theater. I have never crashed a gate, and the last
time I even snuck into a show was at the Skating Rink in Central Park,
NY in the early 70's. I have only bought tickets in the parking lot
once, but I have sold them many times. I don't think going to a concert
without a ticket is a bad idea unto itself. I also think the people who
climb fences, crash gates, etc, went to the show with any other
intention in general. Some human forms go to concerts with no money,
and a firm determination to get in. If they can't get a "miracle" in
the parking lot, they are going to resort to any means they can to get
in.
When my ex-gf and I went to see the Dylan-Phil show we were both
professionals in our mid 40's. There was no chance we were going to
crash a gate, or climb a fence. Also, I don't drink, or get high, so
nothing was going to imair my judgement enough that I would decide to do
somethig stupid.
I think the people who are being addressed as the problem causers in the
"if you don't have a ticket, stay home, are not the people who are on
this list. It seems a little incongruous that a given individual is
going to have a bunch of money tied up in computers, DAT decks, digital
audio card, and/or a full concert recording rig with a portable DAT,
Microphones, preamps etc, and all that goes with it, and be crashing
gates, or climbing fences.
Going to a concert without a ticket does not equal gate crashing, etc.
Going to a concert with no money, and an attitude "I'm getting in no
matter what" equals the problems described.

this is not publis bitching, i was trying to warn
people in this community about someone who i now,
hear more and more worse things about as i get emails
everyday about his trading standards, comments so on.
i understand that when i attack 1 person here i am
attacking a whole fleet, i said that me friend was
going to a show with or without a ticket,.
so you people can sit there and say that none of you
who has chimed in has never gone to a show without a
ticket, looking to get in. so what if some one goes
to a show without a ticket, whats the big deal,
what does this do to the community, what about the
time your brother or sister had an extra with them
, then sold it in the lot then boought you a beer or
a veggie burrito, or gas. thats what it does, it
helps someone out of a jam, if i had an extra & i
wanted to get back what i paid for it , then so be it.
don't try to bash me, i've been in this scene longer
than most of the people on this list, it's funny
when someone here trys to say "hey he's a bad trader"
or "hey he ripped me off" oh no, can't be done, but,
if someone sells a CD or has a crispy SBD of a band
that doesn't allow taping then by all means lets
hop on the band wagon.
my $0.02 and it wasn't even worth that, if you don't
know when someone is trying to help , well thats sad.

It really depends on a number of factors.
For instance, people showing up near MSG on NYE hoping to get lucky
aren't a problem. Even the 200K people who tried for tickets (by
somebody's estimate) wouldn't be more than a blip in the usual NYE
mess around Times Square.
At the other extreme, if a show is in the middle of nowhere, it
likewise doesn't matter much.
In between, the difference between 20,000 people with tickets showing
up and going to the show, and them plus 10,000 people without tickets
hanging around the parking lot, hassling passers-by, and otherwise
making nuisances of themselves (even if just by forcing people with
tickets to park some distance away by filling the lots) is noticeable.
Any one person likely isn't a problem. It's the numbers that are.

Problem is, the manual the unit comes with doesn't have this info. It was
revised shortly after the latest batch were shipped. It's all well and
good to say "read the manual", but you can't read what's not there.

That's why Apogee puts the manual up on their website. (Well, that
and it's probably a good selling point. I'm just waiting for their
AD1000 buyback program, probably.)

Subject: batch of pre-recorded DATs available for B&P value
Date: Sun, 29 Sep 2002 09:41:47 -0700 (PDT)
hi everybody --
i'm cleaning house, and i'd like to find a home for a
few DATs that i've uploaded and archived to shorten.
i'm getting rid of this as a batch only; don't write
me asking about one in particular.
in a move that i hope isn't too controversial, i'm not
accepting b&p for these, rather i'd like to receive
the amount you'd pay for these DATs as if they were
blank. more on this below.
before i explain further, here's what's on the 8 DATs:
60 Meter tapes:
Bauhaus 9-14-98 Tabernacle Theater Atlanta GA dsm-6
source
Bauhaus 8-17-98 Warfield Theater San Fran CA schoeps
mk4 source
Bauhaus 8-18-98 Warfield Theater San Fran CA schoeps
mk4 source
Love & Rockets 6-12-96 Newbar Raleigh NC unknown dAUD
(sounds great)
Naked City 5-3-92 Fabrik Hamburg GR FM source
New York (Trey/Mike side project) 5-21-97 Club Toast
Burlington VT DSBD source
90 Meter tapes:
Sex Mob w/ Medeski & Wood 8-8-00 Yoshi's Oakland CA FM
source
MMW 12-13-98 Philly PA Neumann km140 source
all of these are excellent tapes (data grade, mostly
maxell & sony), free of dropouts, etc. a fine start
to a newbie's DAT collection...
now, as for the value. american digital
(www.am-dig.com) sells 10 packs of maxells for $3.09 &
$3.19 for 60 and 90 M, respectively, so, using the
cheaper price for 60M tapes... 8 x $3.09 = 24.72. Add
to that whatever it'll cost to ship the tapes to you,
and these DATs are all yours. with this payback money
i'm just going to be buying into a CDr spindle... i
swear i'm not financing al qaeda or anything foul, so
please don't flame me! i am completely open to
negotiation if anybody thinks this is 'fuzzy math' or
i'm trying to pull a fast one... i'm not, again, just
cleaning house.
drop me a line if you're interested in this deal ...
first respondent who can paypal me within the next 24
hours is the winner. (if you don't have a paypal
account, let me refer you and we both get $5 free.
sweet!)
