Kaz kowrzesz@aol.com ------------------------------ From: David Toomey Subject: 2496 Audiophile card/software Date: Tue, 8 Oct 2002 12:49:54 -0700 (PDT) Howdy All- Is there a kind soul out there who could take a sec to help a very unsavy "computer wise" guy. I got a new sound card and Im having a few problems, which Im sure are a result of small issues Im justunable to recognize. I purchased the M-Audio 2496 Audiophile card/software. The sound card appears to be installed correctly and drivers downloaded . Before this card: Transferring into CDwav, I set the levels, recorded the line in, added track marks, then went to Sound Forge for any editing. Now: With the new soundcard I have been unable to set the levels to record into CDwav. I have a line level showing, but its not hot enough, or adjustable for that matter. Its the same level no matter what I attempt to adjust. Before: I would go to my Windows sound/volume icon where I would choose the input source/line in, the rec mode, and set input volume levels. The new software has overidden that apparently. If any of this is familiar to you, drop me a line.. If you use this card and can help me get over the hump here, please contact me offline. I would really appreciate it. Thanx in advance for your help- Dave Toomey __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Faith Hill - Exclusive Performances, Videos & More http://faith.yahoo.com ------------------------------ From: "DRider" Subject: Re: Oade bro mods Date: Tue, 8 Oct 2002 18:33:28 -0400 Bill, My M1 was modified by the Oade's. However, they gave me a deal because I bought their stealth mics. They do it as a package deal, that if you buy one, you get the deal on both. There is no battery box etc. w/ their mics. I am happy w/ my setup, but I am not a massive stealth taper. I do it when I have to and I have been very happy w/ the results. The recordings that I have made w/ this setup sound better than many recordings that I have heard made w/ the setup you are running, but many variables could contribute to this opinion. It is my understanding that Doug's modification to the M1 is similar in theory to your external bass rolloff filter. If you plan on continuing to use the same mics, I am not certain how beneficial such a modification would be for you. If you are budget minded, I think your money could be put to better use. Have you called them? If not, call and ask for Ben or Jim Oade himself. They will be happy to answer your questions in detail. Doug is extremely busy and does not talk on the phone often. But...... Doug is great about responding to emails pertaining to technical questions. Have you emailed him w/ this same question?? If not, get typing man! Some things to ask yourself........ Do you have a full rig or are you a patcher at taping friendly shows? Do you stealth alot of shows? If you primarily stealth and patch when you can, you may want to save your money for some really nice stealth mics such as DPA, MBHO, Neumann or Schoeps active capsules. Then you could save some more cash up and go for the Sound Devices MP-2 preamp. It's small enough to stealth. Then if you save even more cash, you could go w/ the SBM-1. You might even luck out and find one that the Oade's have modified. These 2 components along w/ the M1 are small enough to stealth and make some phatty recordings. If you don't want to spend this much money, you may want to spend your cash on some blank DATs and/or something for the head to enjoy the next show ") Peace, D-Rider ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ From: "Bill J" Subject: Oade bro mods Date: Mon, 07 Oct 2002 12:27:51 -0700 I was wondering if anyone here has gotten the Oade Bros. modification to a Sony portable. Preferably...a PCM-M1. I don't have much cheese to spread around so I'm looking to improve my sound for the least cost. I run Core Sound Cardioids with a battery box/bass roll off filter>20 dB attenuator cable> Mic in. I've run it this way since I've heard bad things about running Mic in alone. (people having clipping at a lower level than normal) The Oade site explains a bit about this but I'd like to hear from people who have done it to see if it is going to make a big difference or little. (I say all this realizing that my mics are the major limiting factor in my sound quality here.) Laurent ------------------------------ From: greg weston Subject: sorry, a CDR burning question Reply-To: gregweston@frenzmail.net Date: Tue, 8 Oct 2002 17:48:36 -0700 (PDT) I wasn't sure where to ask since this is a CDR question but maybe some kind folk(s) could point me in the right direction. Due to some recent pc problems, we recently had a cheap CDRW writer installed (Lite-On 40/12/48 IDE running with Win 98) and even though it offers DAO, it is still putting in brief gaps in-between tracks (not the full 2 second gaps associated with TAO but ultra brief gaps) on my CDs. The crappy software that came with the burner doesn't offer WAV or anything like that. Will I need to add a software package in order to solve my problem? The included software also doesn't seem to allow me to store the master CD onto the harddrive either. Can anyone offer me some advice or at least point me to a website where my questions can be answered by another person online? I've dreaded the day I'd have to start doing trading via computer where I am a complete idiot instead of DAT>DAT where i am only marginally an idiot. At least my DAT clones come out the way i want them. Thanks! Date: Tue, 08 Oct 2002 22:58:58 -0500 Looking specifically for John Cowan's set. This is the only set from the Jamgrass tour that I haven't been able to find *at all*. The band's gear crashed the night before so they were unable to tape it themselves. Local reviews said Cowan and Sam Bush were the highlights of the entire festival, so the band would love to hear this one back if anyone has it. Dirk ------------------------------ From: "Will Foy" Subject: Problems with vdat and dat2wav Date: Wed, 9 Oct 2002 01:52:21 -0400 Awhile ago, I purchased on of the Peregrine drives being repeatedly offered on the list. I'm itching to get it running now that my box is finally configured. FWIW, I'm running WinXP Pro SP1, on a system configured with a Soyo Dragon motherboard, featuring the 4 independent IDE controllers on the board. This comes into play b/c it sees the ATA controller as almost a SCSI controller in the System control panel. The drive is detected as "ARCHIVE Python 01931-XXX Scsi sequential device" I'm using a Tekram SCSI card, sitting on a PCI slot, with a 50pin rounded ribbon cable in between it and the drive, with the drive on the "2nd" of the two connectors intended to be connected to, the first has nothing connected to it. Now, windows "sees" the tape drive in the system control panel, but doesn't show it in the drive listing. The drive accepts power, and will accept a DAT tape inserted into it. I've installed the ASPI drivers from Adaptec, for WinXP, from their site. I've downloaded the reputedly most recent demos of vdat and of dat2wav, but I can't get VDAT ro run, even in compatibility mode for win95, and dat2wav returns aspi errors for every combination I throw at it for x:y:z, using the command dat2wav x:y:z outfile, where x:y:z represents a number from 0-7:0-7:0-7 and outfile is the file I want to write to.. Are there any gurus with Dat2wav on the list who can give me/us a few pointers in the right directions? If so, I'll be glad to document this process and tell the list what we come up with, so it'll be searchable in the archives.
