Newbie to DAT, and was hoping that someone could hook
me up with a B&P for some tapes or trade my CDRs (I
have around 900 shows) for your DATs. Drop me a line
if interested and I'll send a link to my list.
Thanks
John

The only way I've seen to adjust the level is if you are going from an
analog source, through an A/D converter, then you can adjust the level
(Gain) at the A/D converter. Otherwise it seems the original idea of
Normalization, or use EQ is the only way to adjust the levels. On the
plus side of this, I had a CD-R recording, that was transferred and had
the levels all overcooked, and massive amounts of distortion through the
entire recording. By using EQ to bring down the levels, and some
normalization, I was able to rid the recording of most of the
distortion. It's not perfect, but it's a lot better than what I
recieved.

If your using the RCA analog inputs you can adjust the input volume
with the
Monitor Mixer located in the M Audio Delta Control Panel. If your
using
digital in you can't, at least not that I know of."

I've been working on a linux program for reading/writing DATs on audio
capable DDS drives and have gotten requests to make it available from
a few people on this list. I spent a few days converting it from
its rather esoteric nature that only I understood to a bit more of a
usable program for others. I added some sanity checks and a wee bit of
documentation and a few command line options to make it useful in an
environment different from mine.
If you are a linux user (or experimenter), have an audio capable DDS
drive, know your way around a unix shell, and don't mind dealing with a
bit of my eccentricity, then download and tell me what you think.
Note: this is a command line program with limited functionality. It is
still in the ALPHA testing phase. It is designed mainly as a tool for
DATHeads like us to get audio information off a tape and onto a computer
(or vise-versa). I may decide to make a nice pretty GUI application
that will have DAT deck functionality (play, rew, ff, etc.) if there is
a demand for it.

without trying to be confrontational, new sony blanks cost about $2 a piece. charging over that, or even close to that, for used tapes is, in my opinion, kinda schmeeky....

Date: Fri, 11 Oct 2002 17:09:45 -0500
Guys,
I would like to either sell or trade my ADK's . They are brand new, only
2 months old. They are large diaphragm ADK A-51 TL's with 4 selectable
polar patterns of cardioid, hyper cardioid, figure eight and omni.
Brand new, 2 months ago, these mics cost me $1000. I'd like to either
trade them for equally priced mics, or sell them for no less than $850.
Included is a very nice ADK locking flight case, windscreens,
shockmounts and padded leather bags for carrying the mics individually.
E-mail me if interested or want to trade!

Yes, it's true to say you can adjust the volume down but I don't think you
can boost the incoming signal.

I'm a huge Television / Tom Verlaine / Richard Lloyd collector, and am
always looking to add to my collection. Right now, my collection is
comprised of CD-R and cassettes, no DAT. But, I figured I'd post here
anyway in hopes of finding kindred spirits. My list is at:

Subject: Rolling Stones 9-22-02 Tower Theater B&P CDR offer
Date: Sat, 12 Oct 2002 01:30:56 EDT
hey kids,
Thanks to Mark on this list, I can now offer a B&P for 2*cdrset (74 or 80
min) of:
Rolling Stones, 9-22-02, Tower Theater, Philadelphia
source info mk4v > sx-m2 > sbm1 (24 bit) > d100 row 12 fob
This sounds really good. The show is about 100 minutes or so. I barely know
any of the songs, but they start with Jumping Jacks Flashing and the set
includes Start You Up and another song whose title I've already forgotten.
Does anybody have artwork or setlist that they can email me so I can include
it with the B&P as a killer PDF? The Paul 4-16-02 Philly artwork really
rocked the house, and is it the same taper who did both shows?
Anyway I'll take up to 20 or so B&P (some people may remember that I did this
for Paul several months ago), CDR only, preferably Fuji because Toast seems
to have difficulties with non-Japanese CDRs. Actually let me just require
Fuji, it makes my life more easier, and I can be evil this way (is it an evil
petting zoo?). Hrm, deadline Sunday 03:23 Easter Island time, and I
sincerely hope that at least SOMEBODY who participates in this B&P is willing
to spread the wealth with their own B&P. Leadtime is 1 to 80 days, probably
closer to 7 (in all honesty). Email me for address, I'll do a joint mail-out
so that everyone can see who else is participating, and MAYBE shame you all
into doing equivalent B&P (hardly anyone was good at doing B&P for Paul
4-16-02 which was really disappointing for me to see, esp since Matt
specifically asked for people who would do B&P). Hrm, if certain people
email me, I may ask directly for a trade, just as a warning, but there are
only 4 targets on this list that I can think of at the moment.
I can't do DAT because I'm incompetent and I loaned my portable DAT to a
friend. Sorry.
Oh and I'll be gone Nov 5 to 15 so don't be too late. Oh! If anybody has any
good life sets for STEPS or A1 or H & CLAIRE (those bitches who broke up
Steps), then I'm definitely interested please please please let me get what I
want.
With unconditional conditions (yes I am a bitch),
Mike xx
bwt: CDR (1) of New Order 2-21-87 Red Parrot, Perth: last 4 songs from side
2, because side 1 of cassette was faulty, go figure... does ANYBODY have the
first side of this show? Songlist: kick-ass Blue Monday seguing to In A
Lonely Place, encore of Elegia and Sister Ray (really brilliant)

Subject: Question about AIWA HD-S200
Date: Sat, 12 Oct 2002 05:32:24 -0700 (PDT)
Hello all,
after solving the problem with the battery pack for my
aiwa S100, I now have a question regarding an AIWA
HD-S200 I got (looks like all my portables have some
kind of problem). The problem is: Sometimes the unit
does not playback unless I push the cover down, then
it plays back fine. The unit records perfectly, the
problem occurs only when playing a tape. I have
noticed that when I close the cover, it does not close
completely, meaning it is not flush against the rest
of the body. I have also noticed that the cassette
holder has two tiny springs on either side that get
stretched out as one closes the cover.
My feeling is that the springs have lost some of their
tension and therefore the cover does not close
properly, but I do not want to touch the unit before
asking around in hope that somebody has seen or
experienced the same problem and found the cause and
hopefully, the solution for it.
Thanks a lot
P.D: Anybody willing to offer me a B&P??? so far I
have only done one trade and gotten 16 tapes as I only
started trading a short time ago and stopped due to a
loss in the family. I am willing to trade the tapes as
well. Contact me off list to send a list of what I
have or to work out a B&P. I am mostly looking for
Phish, Phil, any good jazz shows and well, most anything....

This has been asked and answered before but I still can't seem to manage
it. I have a tape with music peaking at -3dB but averaging much less, and
applause peaking around -1dB (because I used the D100 mic limiter to
control the applause level). I'd like to squash everything above -3dB
down to -3dB. I tried the Dynamics processing in Cool Edit 2000, setting
it to flat (1:1) below -3dB and Compress 100:1 (essentially infinity)
above -3dB. But this cuts the -1dB peaks only to about -1.5dB. How can I
reduce them to -3dB?
