Subject: RE: VIRUS ALERT (it's a hoax)

Synopsis The file jdbmgr.exe is actually a dangerous Microsoft Windows virus
and deleting it will prevent it from spreading.
See the warning here.
Is it true? No, it is a hoax.
Like the SULFBNK.EXE virus scare, this virus warning attempts to trick the
unwary user into deleting a legitimate part of Microsoft Windows operating
system.
While the Urban Legend Zeitgeist waffled on whether the SULFBNK.EXE virus
scare was a deliberate hoax or a just the product of a misundertanding, we
won't be wishy-washy this time: it's a hoax.
The virus scare trades on the presence of the Java Debugging Manager,
jdbmgr.exe, that is a part of the Microsoft Windows operating system.
While jdbmgr.exe can be a target of the W32.Efortune.31384@mm virus, the
mere presence of jdbmgr.exe does not mean your computer has been infected.
Unfortunately, it doesn't mean that it hasn't been infected. Popular
anti-virus products offered by Symantec and McAffee are capable of detecting
and removing the W32.Efortune.31384@mm virus but they aren't capable of
restoring jdbmgr.exe if you have deleted it.
To recap:
The presence of a file named jdbmgr.exe does not mean your computer is
infected with the W32.Efortune.31384@mm virus.
The W32.Efortune.31384@mm becomes active immediately upon infecting a
computer and does not lie dormant for fourteen days.
Deleting any file named jdbmgr.exe will not remove the W32.Efortune.31384@mm
virus nor will it restore any damage done by the virus.
The W32.Efortune.31384@mm virus can infect a number of other Microsoft
Windows systems files besides jdbmgr.exe.
Popular antivirus programs such as Norton AntiVirus and McAffee VirusScan
are capable of detecting and removing the W32.Efortune.31384@mm virus.
Why? The email is debunked here.
When? May 2002
Comments It's that sinister teddy bear icon that gives it all away.
One thing to note, the Urban Legend Zeitgeist does not specialize in
analysis of computer virus warnings. There are a number of sites that do,
please see the links below.

The message in the previous digest suggesting you find and delete
a file jdbmgr.exe strikes me as suspicious. The line that struck
me as suspicious was:
>> The virus is (called jdbmgr.exe) is not detected by Norton or
>> McAfee anti-virus systems.
Usually these people are on top of real viruses!
I suspected that jdbmgr.exe would be a file required by windows,
and after you delete it, your system will break. But, in my case I
didn't find it on my system. Perhaps it's a file used by another
version of windows.
In general, keep in mind that chain mail about viruses often *are*
viruses, in one form or another. If you have a message that you're
not sure about, you can go to Norton or McAfee's web sites and
often learn about the latest hoaxes.

This is a load of bunk.
See this page for the truth:
http://www.snopes.com/computer/virus/jdbgmgr.htm
These hoax chain emails are often seen passed around AOL losers,
resulting in people deleting necessary files and spamming the rest of
the world.
Do not forward these chain letters around unless there is a link to a
reputable site that backs it up, like snopes, Mcafee, Norton... etc.
The email chain letter is the virus itself... it results in people
doing the damage themselves, deleting necessary files and emailing
everyone in their address book. If you forwarded anyone else this crap,
you should do them a favor and tell them that it is bologna.
Sorry to post of topic, I just hate getting these emails, espicially on
a list. Besides, I use Mac & Linux not the virus prone MS "OS".
Peace.

You should have done what you usually do and ignore the email you received
about the virus. It's a hoax. You've been had.
jdbmgr.exe is a system file. Yes, of course you found it, it's supposed to
be there. You've damaged your own operating system. You would be wise to
replace the file to it's original location.

you have to have phantom power for the oktavas. so, you will need to buy at
least a portable 2-channel power supply. i would suggest a denecke ps-2,
but you could probably get away with a rolls pb 224. my suggestion would be
this:
mc012 > ps-2 > transformers > D8
this will give you some extra gain so you can use the line-in on the D8.
the transformers run XLR>Male 1/4", so you'd need a 1/4" Female X2 > 1/8"
stereo cable. you should be able to get this from radio shack. let me know
if you need any more help.

VIRUS HOAX
BEWARE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This virus warning that has been added to your digest #517 is a hoax. The
file (jdbmgr.exe) is a file that is needed and shouldn't be deleted.
The virus is actually the note being spamed
all over the internet. We got this same warning and our company security
administrator verified that is was a HOAX.... Everyone who receives this
will find the file (WHICH IS A SYSTEM FILE) and think it is a virus. You have
served as a vehicle to spread the virus not the cure!!!!!!!
Anyone who has removed this file it should get it restored. GOOD LUCK.

Hi there,
on my way back to Munich last night I was virtually SHOCKED to hear the
first three songs of the Springsteen Berlin show live on the radio (what a pain
to be in the car, without access to a DAT recorder, in the middle of a two
hour trip and hearing a Springsteen show live on the radio!!!)...."thank God"
:-) they stopped the broadcast after the third song ("The ties that bind") and
switched to their regular schedule..
Did anyone , by accident, get the entire show last night?? Did any other
radio station (beside "Bayern 3) braodcast the entire show maybe and did anyone
catch it (or any bigger part of the set??)

This is sure to be a touchy issue, so my personal anecdotes should be
taken with a grain of salt, but...
I use DDS a lot at work and home for data backups and have tons of
tape so naturally I've tried this. My Sony PCM-M1 didn't mind it a
bit as far as I could tell. The tape is even thinner still than DDS
90M, but the deck seemed to maintain the proper tension throughout.
Everything seems to indicate to me that 120M DDS2 media is compatible
(DDS machines have no problem interchanging the two, and the only
mechanical difference AFAIK is a dual speed head in the DDS drives);
however, I'd only do this if you REALLY REALLY need 4 hours non-stop
for some reason (unattended radio broadcast comes to mind) and I would
convert back as soon as possible.
In short, I think the worst case would be a snapped tape due to thinner
media and different tension requirements between DAT and DDS. YMMV.

I don't have any cdr/dat copying capability but I do owe a bandwith tax.
Here's what I'll do...I have 3 shows that are extra copies or I can make a
copy from my master later. As such...I can only offer the single shows. It
would be nice for the person(s) who get them to be willing to copy and offer
them up as b&p's. Here's what's for grabs:
11/18/01 INCOMPLETE - The Mars Volta - Graceland Seattle 1cdr*
*includes full show of Les Savy Fav from same day/venue
??/??/?? Neil Young*
*This is a show I got in a b&p from Dan(?) at Am-dig. He offered it up
earlier this year. I don't have source info. It was listed as a
digi-soundboard show. Neil solo.
11/8/01 INCOMPLETE - Tool - Tacoma Dome 2 cdrs*
(I'm missing the first 2&1/2 songs. I have a clean recording with little to
NO CROWD noise. If you have the whole show...help a guy out?
*the Neil show is from a dat source (I assume)...the other two shows are
from MD but are very decent for such.
