Subject: Questions regarding JVC XD-P1 and IEC-958 type 1 digital I/O
Date: Mon, 21 Oct 2002 13:30:53 -0500
I am looking at purchasing a this portable DAT unit (JVC XD-P1) but have a
few questions that maybe some people on this list can help me out with.
First of all, are their some people on this list who have experience with
this unit that can give me some info regarding their experience with this
machine??
The one I am purchasing I believe is missing the battery, but JVC uses a
proprietary battery so what are the chances of finding one of these
batteries or making my own battery pack??
One last question involves inputs and ouputs. The only info I can agther
regarding inputs and outputs is that it does have IEC-958 type 1 digital
I/O. I am not familiar with this type of digital connection. Is this another
name for spdif or is it AES/EDU? If spdif is it optical or coaxical?
Thanx for your help
Boone

Hey All.
Since my last post was actually tearned me mail from some tapers (and I thank you!), I thought I'd just be more specific with another one.
I am desperately seeking tapes of these 3 David Bowie Earthling shows:
9/6/97 Plaza of Nations, Vancouver
9/7/97 The Paramount, Seattle
10/12/97 The Capitol Ballroom, Washington, DC
I know the Washington one was taped, don't know about the others.
Any help at all is greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

Hi,
Can anyone with more experience offer a DAT-newbie some words of advice?
I recently bought a 2nd hand Sony D7 and although it worked OK for
approx. 4 hours, it now 'sticks'.
By 'sticks' I mean that when I power it up it seems to get caught in a 5
second loop. There's no tape inside but it makes a slight noise and then
turns off before making the noise again. This goes on forever and it won't
even let me open the door.
Is this a common problem and if so, what is the solution?
I've only used it for one gig so far and was very impressed with the
results. I've bought several tapes for future recordings so I'd like to
repar it as soon as possible.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Best wishes,
Gordon Comstock (UK)

just to clarify, since I just got 20+ emails asking 'why are you selling the
v3?' 'does it suck?'
the answer is a definite NO! I think it sounds sweet, is built like a tank,
and is an unbeleivable deal for the price. I just happen to prefer the
v2>ad2k sound slightly over the v3. i'm dithering down the tacoma sci fob's
I did this weekend with it, and will be circing both the 64>v3 and the
64>v3>analog out>ad2k versions shortly. Anybody who has the capability to
properly playback the 24bit sources is welcome to download those, if you
email me for a login.

Unfortunely was broadcasted only the first three tracks from other two
german Radios:
"NDR2" and "Radio Eins"
I really hope in future will be re-broadcast in longer version.
Expecially Radio Eins each summer (late of July-Late of August), for an
entire month, broadcast each night two hrs of Concert of last/current year,
mostly of them recorded in Berlin.
So think we have to wait till next July 2003, crossing our fingers.

Virus alerts have nothing to do with DAT/taping/trading. The digests are text
only, right? So you aren't going to get a virus through the digest. If people
are concerned about viruses they should monitor the appropriate venues, and
not rely on (usually incorrect) info from this list. Everyone might not
agree with me, but I am requesting that there be a policy that frowns upon
posting virus alerts to this list.

Does anyone out there have a custom active cable solution for use with the
Neumann KM-140's? The stock LC-3 active cables seem like too much for use in
low-profile situations. And is it possible to use the active cables without
the KM-140 mic bodies? Reading through the archives someone mentioned how
the KM-140 capsules contain all the electronics. Any ideas would be

I have come across some used data DATs that have been erased. I will put
anything you'd like from my 950hr DAT collection to tape in exchange for
the same amount of new blank DATs. No money changes hands and you get a
good bunch of DATs for trading. I started my first tape collection in the
very same way. You can choose as many DATs as you like (really! as long as
you're patient). Also, if any tape has a problem, I will copy it anew and
send it your way.
This offer is good as long as I am able to clone dats, so essentially,
there is no expiration or limit to number of people. I have 13 x 90meter
DATs and 2 x 60meter DATs on hand, so after they're gone, the trades are
all B+P. I would really like to trade the prerecorded DATs below in a
block of ten 90 meter DATs because a fellow backed out of a large trade a
few months back. The following on tape ready to send as a 10 x 90meter DAT
block. For other recordings from which you can choose: Contact me

I just ran my first set of shows with the MX-100 modified to take pair of 9V
(as per Nakamichi techs suggestion). I run a CM300s with a CP3 (super omni)
in the center and a pair of CP1s (card) for the stereo pair (NOS more or
less, the 3 capsules are aligned on the same horizontal plane). I set the
center channel to about 10:30-11 and the stereo pair at 2:00-3. I have
noticed that the hole in the middle I some times get with the cards alone
has vanished but I have noticed other artifacts. Can people who have some
experience email about this mixer and the results they get with it? The
mixer is nice and is an inexpensive alternative to other pre-amps out there,
just so you all know (about $40-80 on ebay). The only problem with it is
the 1/4 inch inputs. The 2 X 9V (Duracell Procells) seem to last more than
4 hours.
