im not trying to sound sarcastic, but if you have that much crowd on the
tape you are too far away from the source to make a good tape. so you
need to move much closer if possible, like in front of the soundboard at
least. u will find the closer you get to the stage/pa/source, the quieter
the crowd will be on your tape because most of the crowd is behind you.
if you simply cannot move for some reason, find some comprising level to
set it at and keep it at. constantly adjusting levels is the most
annoying thing when listeneing back to it.

while they may be a little big, i think its doable. prior to the schoeps, i
had worn 460s caps on glasses successfully. depending on your hairstyle, you
could get away with it. you'd need some big glasses though, maybe some
bassmasters or ray charles style, with the thick arms. check out posthorn
recordings website (in nyc) and look at the clip style shockmounts. these
are little clips that will attach to the base of the collette at the wires
"receiver", not around the capsule itself. they are adjustable 180 degrees
and are rather small. it is conceivable you could remove the body and
actually incorporate the clip into the glasses, or just tape them on. i
owned a pair of these till one cracked. it will work. seriously, i think
this would be a nice setup, especially if you incorporated a wig into the
rig or already have a large dandelionish mane on your head.
for a general admission concert with no seating and a thick,
non-penetratable crowd, my money'd be on you leaving with a great tape.
these days its not too tough to spot the schoeps taper. hes the guy with the
black kangol hat about 14 rows back....
go for it and dont be ascared.

Just heard MeShell will be on Morning Becomes Eclectic tomorrow. I listen to
KCRW over the web, so I won't be able to get a very good recording. Can
someone who can pull a good FM signal tape this and share the goods? I've
got some older MeShell to trade including a past KCRW appearance with Fuze
in 96 as well of lots of other funk & jazz. I have high-speed internet so I
could just download this from you if you are also high-speed enabled.
Someone please capture this! I'll take just about any format (shn, mp3 -
high bitrate preferred, dat, CD, MD) except analog tape (no deck anymore)
and will reimburse you for your trouble and media. Thanks!

Subject: Stand Alone CD Recorder Advice Needed
Date: Wed, 23 Oct 2002 17:02:07 -0400
Hi,
I am looking for a Stand Alone CD Recorder for transferring my DATs to
CD before mastering it in the computer. Of course I am interested in a
deck that does not automatically resample 44.1 DATs. I have been looking
at Tascam and Sony pro models, but have also heard that HHB have good
decks. I really don't know what decks are considered good, so any advice
on this would be greatly appreciated.
Also, is there a stand alone deck out there that can record to MP3? I
have a lot of spoken word audio that I would like to convert to MP3
without going through the computer.
Thanks for any advice,
Tom

Subject: E-Z CD Creator and Enhanced CD's...
Date: Wed, 23 Oct 2002 20:52:42 -0400
Any knowledgeable comments on the following would be appreciated:-
I've just tried using E-Z CD Creator (Platinum) to make an "enhanced" CD,
that is, one that contains BOTH data tracks, readable as a CD ROM, and
conventional audio tracks, playable in a regular CD player.
I've followed the instructions in E-Z and am having a variety of problems,
the main one of which is that the program seems to want to add two folders
of it's own labeled CDPLUS and PICTURES. Attempting to delete these
unwanted folders gives a "can't delete... files are locked". The folders
contain data files that can't be read with Wordpad. On a test where I used
two data files and one conventional music track...
CDPLUS contained two files:-
INFO.CDP
SUB_INFO.US
PICTURES contained four files:-
JACKET01.00J
JACKET01.00N
JACKET01.00S
JACKET01.00T
A commercial Enhanced CD did not contain these odd folders.
Now the questions:-
What are these folders and can they be removed?
Is there a better program to make an Enhanced CD than using E-Z?
(that is, one that doesn't force these odd folders into the finished item?)
I could use another method in E-Z called Mixed Mode but it leaves the data
track open and if you have ever heard a data track played back, it is a
sure fire tweeter destroyer!

Hi,
I experience a problem with the transport of my Teac (Tascam) DA-P20
portable DAT recorder: the tape loads/unloads normally, ff and rewinds
normally as well, but when in play or record mode it seems to run
irregularly, resulting in the sound going on and off because of unstable
tracking. During playback or recording the head-drum is also running
irregularly whith audible irregularities in the speed. When experimentally
braking the speed very slightly by putting finger pressure to the rim of the
head-drum the sound stays on and the audible speed irregularities disappear.
What can cause this and, more importantly, how can it be resolved (the
situation was there one day and the deck has never had any previous
problems - ran a cleaning tape through the system as well)?
I appreciate any clues or solutions since I will not invest heavily in
repairs of this machine, but it would be a shame not to be able to use it
any more.
Thanks,
Paul-Peter

wow, i thought i was the only one left with a living DA-P20 :)
unfortunately i dont think there is really anything you can do to resolve
the issue except get it serviced. obviously the thing is at least 10years
old, so its not unusual a portable would start to exibit those probs now.
hopefully tascam will offer to repair that deck.
