Mike, If you can; find out what the specs are on your current
microphone. Specifically you want to know what SPL rating it has.
Usually it is measured at a distance of 1 meter. At that close of a
distance to the FOH (Front OF House) you will need a mic that will handle
up to a minimum of 130 dB depending on how loud they play.
No amount of filtering will decrease the distortion of what the
microphone emits naturally due to it's physical properties. After you
have possession of such a mic then you might want to consider filtering.
I do most of my filtering post recording.
If you do not have the cash for an expensive mic now you may consider
renting one? Also you might want to consider purchasing a SPL meter to
get a good idea of how loud your favorite artists play and average out
different distances. If people start recording this information it may
help make these decisions easier not only for you but the for the next
guy as well.
Sincerely,
Glen E Peladeau

Date: Wed, 30 Oct 2002 07:14:39 -0500
Hey People,
Passing along a nice show here (Thanks Michael)! My burner can be
picky, Fuji discs give me no problem but other's do so please keep this
in mind when responding. I will attempt to replace any coasters that
are made but if everyone sends Memorex and they all get toasted, I can't
promise that I'm going to replace them all. So please try to send Fuji's.
Here's the original info:
Thanks to Michael on this list, I can now offer a B&P for 2*cdrset (74
or 80
min) of:
Rolling Stones, 9-22-02, Tower Theater, Philadelphia
source info mk4v > sx-m2 > sbm1 (24 bit) > d100 row 12 fob
This sounds really good. The show is about 100 minutes or so.
Trades and B&P are welcome!
Peace,
Sean
PS- Still looking for the ever elusive two Phish NYE tickets, taper or
not. I'm offering all the usual things (cash, patch, ride, etc.) for
FACE priced tickets (all the scalpers must die, including the whining
"fans" who can't go for the various weak reasons, so must ebay them with
a reserve of $500/ticket... piece's of sh*t!)

Subject: DATport problems
Date: Wed, 30 Oct 2002 11:57:19 -0600
I have an Opcode DATport. I recently upgraded my PC from Windows ME
(absolute trash) to Windows 2000. When I was running ME the DATport
icon for the configuration would be in the task bar. When I installed
the DATport in Windows 2000 this icon did not appear. The device works
but I can't change the configuration. I have recently converted a tape
recorded at 44.1kHz and the file plays fast. I am assuming the device
is configured for 48kHz and the software is resampling at a certain
percentage to get the file to 44.1kHz if this is even possible.
Whatever the case the transferred files are fast and I can't seem to
reset the DATport configuration. Has anyone had this same problem or
does anyone have a solution for this problem. Peace, John Bollin

Subject: nomad jukebox3 update
Date: Wed, 30 Oct 2002 11:23:19 -0800
well, not really an update, just trying to deal with the multiple emails I
get every day about this.
At this point (10/30/02), it does NOT record perfectly. Typically find from
1-3 glitches causing audible pops throughout a recording.
now some people have decided to start using these in the field, and are
circulating the recordings, which sound nice. If there are any glitches in
those recordings, you would likely not be able to separate them from the fob
clapping/balloon popping anyway. As long as they clearly note the lineage,
so people know what they are getting, so be it.
I am currently not using it to record, except for a backup for my laptop
(which 99% of the time would be discarded after the show.
Creative engineers have promised a fix in the next firmware, it could be
next week, it could be next year, i dont know.

Subject: Stones 2002 seeds
Date: Wed, 30 Oct 2002 15:51:14 -0600
started hearing from a few folks that some of the '02 Stones gigs are out
there from SBD sources and went on a hunt to verfy. i was led to a dutch BB
that did indeed have some links to ftp boxes with the stuff, but
unfortunately it's all in MP3 format :(
but they do appear to be SBD sources, so someone over there must have a
friend that we'd like to meet. i put up a few posts, tried to nicely ask for
non-MP3 sources w/o ragging on mp3 and i'll just wait it out a bit and who
knows, maybe something will turn up.
but wanted to give everyone the FYI on that and here's a link to that board
if you want to dig around. it's an international BB in english/dutch and if
you've seen the familiar phpBB layout before, you can wing it and post up.
http://www.ultimate-elvis.f2s.com/stonesforum/index.php?board=16
i know there's been some offers of some shows recorded by the gang here with
some nice rigs of late. i sniped a copy of the 9/16/02 Aragon gig made with
the km140's from Tom and just did a 'CD Friendly' seed of it that i have on
my server now.
(The original seed had extra dead air in the beginning/end that i clipped
out and the whole thing in SHN format now is only 675mb and fits on a single
CDR for easy archiving VS the original 714mb seed that i worked from. i do
hate messing with other peeps 'stuff' but i think this was merited as it
sounded basically like the taper left the deck rolling for 10min after the
show and i didn't see myself really 'groovin' out to that track.....;)
and i'm up for hosting any of these other '02 Stones seeds for people if
anyone has the SHN's?
plenty-o-bandwidth/space
and if some legit SBD's that haven't been thru the MP3 mangler turn up form
the dutch site, i'll throw them on the box as well for everyone.

Subject: thanks for the Foam help!!!
Date: Wed, 30 Oct 2002 17:50:06 -0500
I got such a huge response that I thought I would thank everyone here and
also share the info that I received. Here's a couple websites to order foam:
http://www.foammart.com/
http://www.casesbypelican.com (they sell replacement kits for their cases)
and at your local pro camera shop
...and some excellent info was given to me by Jeff W. I'll just cut and
paste the email he sent me below. Thanks everyone!!!
>>>what you are looking for is polyurethane ester foam. It is commonly used
to package electronic parts, so any packaging vendor (look for packaging
services in your yellow pages) should have it.You may want to consider "ESD"
foam (generally pink). DO NOT use "conductive" foam, as the bits will get
inside your stuff and ruin it. Typically these places have a $50 minimum or
some such.
Common mattress foam (also polyurethane, but often ether instead of ester)
will also work, but is not usually as dense (ideally you want a foam with
about a 1.8 pcf (pounds per cubic foot) and 95 ild (indent load deflection
or "squish factor"). Mattress foam is usually around 1.5 pcf and 30 ild and
available in hardware stores, etc (it is the yellowish white stuff).
All of this foam is available as "convoluted", which means it is cut to
resemble egg crate packing (peaks and valleys).
Many of the aluminum suitcase manufacturer's (zero, anvil, etc) sell kits of
foam for the inside that are pre-cut into cubes. Measure your suitcase and
see if you can find a webpage that has a matching size.<<<
