It's silly to use straight plugs if you don't have to. I use that same non-locking molded right angle cable assembly from Mouser, for my Graham-Patten ADC-20. It's a snug fit and could never fall out. The locking one is overkill, IMHO. And a plug (sorry for the pun :) for Mouser, they don't have a minimum order amount. Very nice when you only need one measly item. -Rich -- Richard F. Thanks, Steve ------------------------------ From: rob landis Subject: wierd noise on a DAT Date: Thu, 7 Nov 2002 16:39:08 -0800 (PST) i got a DAT the other day, and there's a noise on the tape every few minutes, per the copy before mine, that sounds kinda like quick hits on a hi-hat or a rattlesnake, maybe... to me, it sounds like an electric tapeworm. but anyways. the noise is wierd cause it's more in the background and more blended with the music than most diginoize. i've never heard anything like it before. does anyone know what might have caused this noise? the tape in question is Nirvana 10/31/91 SBD ANA2->DAT; if anyone has a clean copy that's *not* from boot CD, please let me know. or, for that matter, any other interesting nirvana items (obscure or uncirculated shows especially). many thanks to all... rob __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Date: Thu, 7 Nov 2002 17:05:29 -0800 (PST) Healy was no patron saint of the tapers either, at least if yo're talking FOB. He was a pain in the ass about it himself, had my gear held at the board during a show several times because Dan didn't want us up there. Billy has always been anti taper and as he was the "money" man in the band he stuck his nose in as much as possible. Now they just don't care about anything but the cash as far as TOO is concerned. Ruby is and has been so full of herself it's not funny, it's so difficult to stuff envelopes, give me a break! ===== Casey __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Well, check this obituary out. Chuck Quinn Keith Wester, 62; Sound Engineer Won Emmy, Nominated for Oscars Current TV listings: Enter your zip code to search TV listings and view channel line-ups customized by your cable or satellite provider. > Search TV listings for a specific program By Myrna Oliver, Times Staff Writer Keith A. Wester, Emmy-winning and multiple Oscar-nominated production sound mixer, whose work included such films as "Armageddon" and "The Perfect Storm," has died. He was 62. Wester died Friday of cancer at his Studio City home, said his friend Paul Petersen. His final project was the film "Cradle 2 the Grave," expected to be released next year. Repeatedly nominated for Emmys for his television sound engineering, Wester won the statuette in 1986 for "An Early Frost." He shared Academy Award nominations for sound six times: in 1990 for "Black Rain," 1996 for "Waterworld," 1997 for "The Rock," 1998 for "Air Force One," 1999 for "Armageddon" and last year for "The Perfect Storm." Wester was known for his innovation and for mentoring younger engineers. "If the sound equipment didn't exist to do the job," Petersen said, "Keith would invent it." One of Wester's toughest projects requiring such invention was the wind and water epic "The Perfect Storm," in which he had to contend with on-set 100 mph fans and wave machines and, ultimately, record dialogue between fishing boat captain George Clooney and Mark Wahlberg as the set was submerged. "It required that the microphone be able to record decent dialogue, first of all, and second, not be hurt when it was submerged, and third, pressed into use again for the next take," Wester told The Times after his Oscar nomination. Working in his Professional Sound Recorders lab in Studio City, Wester put together a small microphone, electrical PVC tubing, acoustic foam, hot glue and a condom. The contraption worked perfectly. "I mounted it on the ceiling of the wheelhouse and it worked like a charm," Wester said. "I think I'm going to send that one to the Smithsonian." Born in Seattle, Wester was a ham radio operator by age 13 and was always fascinated by radio and sound equipment. After receiving his bachelor's degree from Cal State L.A. and a master's at UCLA, he worked on sound engineering for about 2,500 commercials. By the early 1980s, he was doing production sound work for major television dramatic programs. Wester began concentrating on motion pictures in the late 1980s, handling sound mixing for such films as "Sea of Love," "Joe Versus the Volcano," "Thelma and Louise," "Frankie and Johnny" and "Body of Evidence." Wester is survived by his wife, the former Joan Bursler; a daughter from his earlier marriage, Wendy Elizabeth Kadovitz; and one grandson. A memorial service is scheduled at 2:30 p.m. Dec. 7 at the Old North Church, Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills. ------------------------------ From: mike lyons Subject: David Gray taping policy? Date: Fri, 8 Nov 2002 09:31:58 -0500 Anyone fly with their rig lately? I'll be taking a full rig (for the first time) to Chicago in two weeks, and wondered if any of you could tell me some tips to make it as easy as possible to take all this crap onto a plane. It'll be a large-ish bag, with a preamp, A/D, D8, mics & cables, 13' Mani stand, and a sinister-looking 12 SLA battery get-up. If I were an $8-per-hour gate security person, I wouldn't like that battery going on a plane one bit... But I'm not going to check this stuff unless that's the only way we'll be allowed to transport it. We'll be departing Charleston, SC, which is not exactly like a "real airport", but that could be a Good Thing or it could be a Bad Thing. Any advice will be appreciated.
