Anybody know Jump, Little Children's taping policy? They're playing a free
show here at Emory next week, and I'd like to be able to tape without
stealthing. Any info appreciated.

Taken from the Ozomatli home page message board:
http://www.ozomatli.com
=====begin included text From JohnBook========
I posted a huge note and nothing is there, I'll try it again.
I haven't been here for awhile, but here is the deal.
Ozomatli are in favor of fans taping their shows, as long as it isn't sold
for
profit. The fact that they allow fans to do this is a testament to how
much they appreciate their audience.
As a longtime live recording collector, I wanted to make sure their live
legacy was done properly, so I went out of my way to create a public
archive so fans could trade them on a regular basis. These shows would
eventually made it to the band for their archives as well.
The last show I received was the Asagiri show from last year. I know of at
least eight others, and I know there are more.
Other bands have a community where fans are taping every single show on
their tour. It has been an uphill battle for me and fans to find people who
are
willing to do this, if I could go on the road with them and do it myself, I
would do it.
But it will eventually happen, at least I hope so.
I'm going to start this up again. If you have any live shows that I do not
have in my
collection, e-mail me at johnbook9@yahoo.com. If you would like to do a
trade,
let's do it. I have a list elsewhere, and I can pass it along to you.
To the powers that be: do you think it would be a good idea to start a
taping
community section on the Ozomatli board, to make it official? I had a lot
of people on my mailing list, and I think it would be great to move things
here.
I could be the moderator, and I could answer any questions, give advice to
new tapers, and make sure that what is circulating is of quality. Let me
know.
I see other bands with other fan sites do this extremely well, and I would
like
to help in anyway possible.

Hi everybody!
Does anyone have a recommendation for what type of monitors I need to plug
into my Midiman Delta DiO 2496 soundcard? My regular computer speakers don't
function with the new soundcard and I need to have speakers/monitors with
coaxial male plug to go into the soundcard. Any ideas, recommendations or
first-hand knowledge? Ideally I'd like to stay on the inexpensive side --
something used is preferred.
Thanks...

this summer i did. as did some friends. they didnt look twice at the bag
after it went thru the xray machine. they were more concerend about my
laptop and my shoes. im sure they get reporters and stuff with the same
type gear all the time going thru. i have heard about people having to
check their batteries tho. another option is sending some of your gear
like batteries and cables ahead of time to your destination via fedex,
usps. ive shipped gear to the hotel i was going to be staying at to
prevent any hassles and carrying too much stuff cause i didnt want to
check bags. just like the airlines suggest.. "GO EARLY"

HHb PDR-1000 with all original accessories / box /
manual + portabrace case for sale. The deck is in
excellent condition and has been used exclusively for
field recording (low hours). Selling 'cause I just
don't use it much any more. I also have a pair of home-
made ecocharge type battery packs for the same (sealed
lead-acid + charger). These will run the deck + mic
preamp (12V) for several shows each. Asking: $1550 +
shipping / obo. Going on eBay soon if things don't pan
out elsewhere.

Scott,
Put any screwdrivers, pocket knife tools, fingernail clippers etc. in the
bag you check.
Carry on all your equipment minus a couple things......
The SLA may or may not cause a problem. That seems to come down to the luck
of the draw. I have been putting my SLA in the checked bag to be safe.
The stand could also cause a "rub".
Do you have a case for it? That would help if you are hell-bent on carrying
it on....
Will the stand fit in a checked bag?
If so, another "better safe than sorry" tip would be to put it in the
checked bag.
If it won't fit, you don't have a clamp that you could clamp onto another
stand when you get to the show, and/or you don't have a smaller stand that
WILL fit into a checked bag.....
be positive and hope for the best.
The first time that I flew after 9/11 - I sent my SLA and my stand to my
destination via UPS Ground. This cost $15 per item. I said the heck w/ that
and I put the SLA in my checked bag and shipped the stand only on the way
back.
When I got home, I went to the local photo shop and ordered a mini-Bogen
stand Model Number 3373 and the 1/4-20 To 3/8 inch adapter (Number 3101).
The list price is $80 and most shops will have to order it.
Now, when I fly I put the mini-Bogen and the SLA in the checked bag and
carry the rest on w/ me. I also own a clamp and clamp when I can.
Here in Jacksonville, a guy named Jim checked my stuff the first time. He
was very nice and explained that the rules state that only he can open the
bag and go through it, not the passenger, once the passenger gives their
consent to the search. He was pretty cool and took an interest in what I had
and why I was traveling to record a show. Since then, I have gotten him
every time and he remembers me. He barley even touches my stuff and just
goes through the motions to satisfy his superiors and the person at the
X-ray machine that called out "bag check".
In Columbus, Ohio I got a guy that did not speak English. He took every
single item out of my bag and swabbed every single item and checked it in
the "bomb" machine. Yep, every single DAT tape, every cable, my Deneckes,
Zefiro etc.. That took nearly one hour and it was highly frustrating.
In Denver, the guy at the X-ray machine kept asking me if I had a
screwdriver in my bag. I said, "no, just microphones". He asked again and
again and then said that he saw the mics. Then he let me through and never
opened the bag. Meanwhile, several elderly people were getting the full
treatment. They had to take their shoes off and everything.
After you get to enjoy this potential roller-coaster ride, you are still
subject to a "random" check at the gate just as you are about to board. I
have been told that a passenger's boarding pass is marked electronically
upon issue. This appears to be true from what I have witnessed. A passenger
walks up to the ticket taker and the boarding pass is run through a scanner,
then the ticket taker magically says that the passenger has been picked for
a "random" screening and for that person to step over to the table. At the
table, all their belongings are searched again and they are asked to empty
their pockets and take off their shoes.
Fortunately, I have not had the(dis)pleasure of this activity. I can take
all the other stuff, but I am not sure if I could keep my patience if I got
a guy like I got in Columbus and then had another search at the gate.
I hope this helps you and anyone else that is thinking about flying w/ gear.
I was quite hesitant at first and sent posts to this list asking for
feedback. Not many people have said much about flying w/ gear, so that's why
I have given a few scenarios.
In many ways, it's like showing up at a venue to tape a show. You may get a
cool person and not get checked at all, while your buddy gets the full
treatment and the security person freaks out because your buddy has some
allergy medicine.........
The most important thing is to get there early, be friendly and be patient.
Peace & Panic,
D-Rider

Anyone fly with their rig lately? I'll be taking a full rig (for the
first time) to Chicago in two weeks, and wondered if any of you could
tell me some tips to make it as easy as possible to take all this crap
onto a plane. It'll be a large-ish bag, with a preamp, A/D, D8, mics &
cables, 13' Mani stand, and a sinister-looking 12 SLA battery get-up. If
I were an $8-per-hour gate security person, I wouldn't like that battery
going on a plane one bit... But I'm not going to check this stuff unless
that's the only way we'll be allowed to transport it.
We'll be departing Charleston, SC, which is not exactly like a "real
airport", but that could be a Good Thing or it could be a Bad Thing.
Any advice will be appreciated.
