Joe, I didn't start the thread on the U24 and Bit for Bit Accuracy, so
get your teeth out of my ass please. Your breaking up my sentences, to
use my words as a basis for a personal attack is something that
indicates more about you, than me.
If DAT>DAT was 100% guaranteed bit for bit accurate, why would pro
quality DAT decks have error counters? I have had several copies of the
same Dead run on DAT. All of them had different flaws at different
places. They were all supposed to have been cloned off the same DAT or
clones of that DAT.
If you can't see the difference between a few errors that are
interspersed, and inaudible to any human, vs errors being made on top of
errors being more likely to be audible, you are missing the reality of
duplication.
And as far as tolerance to ambient shit, perhaps what you would listen
to over and over, I would pitch after 10 seconds.
Have you never run an md5 on a set of SHN files and had it come up with
a file that doesn't verify, only to burn the decompressed wav file to
CD, and not hear audible flaws in the track?
If a error rate amongst bits is 1/1,000,000 I defy you, and anyone else,
to find a human who can hear that. As my prior post had no error rate
specified, it's not possible to tell if I am writing about what is out
of the range of all human hearing or not.
I do not interject my comments in the middle of others comments, because
doing so seems to be a deliberate method to break up the continuity of
an individuals opinion, therefore a deliberate, belittling effort.
That opinion, regardless of who's it is, I will respond to as an entity,
not a collection of disjointed statements.
Returning to the errors in DAT's, since pro quality DAT decks have error
counters in them, it seems if they didn't make errors, why have an error
counter? As far as computers are concerned, once an audio signal enters
a computer it is subject to EMI-RMI. Can anyone say factually that the
audio signal in a computer never has errors introduced by EMI-RMI, and
done so before any md5 can be created? In a DAT forum, that comment
relates to where does a U24 send a signal from a DAT to?
I personally have found the obsession with bit for bit recording,
transferring etc. remarkably AR, especially when the original source is
a 15+ year old analog recording. By all means I want as accurate as
possible of a duplication or original recording, but absolute flawless
bit for bit accuracy is something I have trouble buying. Don't for a
second believe I use shit equipment because of this belief. IMO, it's
like if the CIA and all their technology can't find Bin Laden, how can
we make sure every bit in 700 MB is in the right place for a few hundred
bucks?

Do I get to choose which bit? (Hint: digital silence with one
high-order bit on is a very audible POP.) At 44.1 K samples/sec (time
2 channels), you'd get a high-order bit error about every 11 seconds,
and I assure you that would be quite audible.

There is error correction. So long as the raw error count stays low
enough, all errors are corrected.

Just wondering if anyone has used the Creative Nomad Jukebox 3 for live
recording. It's less than half the cost of a DAT and has some potential
advantages (i.e. sleek size, possibly better for stealthing... no tapes
to buy, 20 GB hard drive, firewire file transfer to PC.
What I'm wondering is, do you get to look at your levels during
recording, and is there some sort of peak limiter like my DAT has?
(Without levels you can look at or a peak limiter, you'd run the risk
of unintentional distortion... plus a peak limiter gives you variable
compression, which is a good thing.)

Happy Holidays to All
I'm hoping to hook my Dad up w/ a copy of Diana Krall's last show of current
tour in Memphis. I believe it was 11-26-02. He was there and was blown away.
He is a serious jazz freak and used to see Miles, Coltrane, Getz etc.. in
S.F. back in the 50's.
He's hip to the stealth scene and asked if I could put feelers out. If anyone
in Memphis managed to pull this, reply offline to ccage@aol.com
I have tons of HQ stuff to trade.
Peace,
Chris

Hello DAT Friends,
I was wondering if any of you out there have or will be recording any of the
Springsteen shows in December. I myself have one coming up and was looking
for some info so I can get a good recording of my show.
I'm interested in any tips any of you may have.
Also, I would like to know about what time the shows have been starting
lately, so I don't start recording too early or get surprised and not be
ready when the show does start? I'd also hate to run out of tape or Battery
juice!
Any long intros like on the last tour when the band took the stage one at a
time at the beginning of the show? About how long in time are the shows
running now?
Any info you can provide would be Great! Thanks everyone!
Happy taping!
