Hoxsie Jr. Or, if you don't mind flashing the drive yourself, which is pretty easy, try this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2077490108 and go here (DDS/DAT Holy Grail): http://www.xs4all.nl/~heemsker/fup/ to download what you need to flash to audio-capable firmware. I know a while back there were some people on this list discouraging using a DDS drive because it was too hard to get them working and only a 'techie' should try using one. Nonsense, they are as simple as any other IDE/SCSI device. The DDS>Hard Drive software is a bit pricey (vdat is $100 and DAT2WAV is $50... especially considering software like EAC is free), but if there is a lager market, perhaps the price can/will come down some. There are tons of these drives out there (pulled from servers) and they are always available on ebay. As a matter of fact, if you find them cheap enough get two. A backup can't hurt. Once you get the SCSI card installed/working (they are PCI nowadays, so this should be easy/no brainer), create a boot floppy with drivers for the SCSI card. A new Windows startup disc will work. You'll need to boot to the floppy, with SCSI working to flash the tape drive. I've only done this in Win98SE2, so if your OS is something else, ymmv. Hope this helps, Alan ------------------------------ From: "Wayne D. Most DATheads have to cross a pretty big gap to go from DAT <-> DAT dubs via S/PDIF to all the techie SCSI stuff like device ID's, termination, channels, luns, etc. If you're already a techie computer nerd, then cool, but most of us are not. I know a few people who've tried the SCSI thing only to give up several hundred dollars later. For these reasons, I only recommend this to adventurous nerds like us. In an effort to make it somewhat cheaper, I have released a free linux program that makes the process at least a bit cheaper. I figure if you use linux, your a techie nerd anyway. As soon as I figure out all the goofy BSDish nuances of SCSI programming, I hope to have a version out for BSD derivatives--including Mac OS X. Don't hold your breath :). The program can be downloaded here: http://www.hoxnet.com/dat-tools/ The current version is 0.02 (wdat_0.02.tar.gz). -- Wayne D. Anyone know if Sony is still doing the flat-rate repair? The story I got from Sony years ago was that the deal was good for seven years after the deck was introduced - a time period which has now passed. On the other hand, can anyone recommend a good repair shop that knows how to deal with D7s and won't charge an arm-and-a-leg. I know it probably makes more sense to upgrade, but since this is my secondary portable deck (which frankly I've been fairly happy with), I'd rather spend a couple hundred to get it repaired than spring for a new one. I was very shocked the other day to open my mail order tickets and discover that I had in fact received a tapers tix for the New Year's show. Well, certain events have transpired in my life since I ordered those tix, mainly the fact that a serious relationship has evolved between a friend and myself. I have paid an enormous amount of money to get her a tix and it is more important to me that we are together for the show then my recording it. (We will be taping the Hampton shows anyways). Since I know it is going to be impossible to get her into the tapers section and I do not want to waste a tapers tix, I am willing to trade this for a tix somewhere in the sec 309 vicinity. PLEASE, I STILL NEED 1 TIX TO EACH SHOW (MSG>Hampton) and will give preference to anyone who can sell me a ticket(s) for face. I live in Florida and would prefer to do a deal in person. I have no access to e-mail this weekend so call my cell at 813-376-0039 or shoot me an e-mail after the weekend.
