These days it's becoming > less and less of an issue, but by using SCSI devices, more IDE/ATA spots > are available. I used to be a big scsi fan, and still own a workhorse 4 year old plex 8/20. But I'm really diggin the cheap ide burners on the market these days. I just picked up a 48X burner for $40 this weekend, it really does burna disc in 2 minutes withthe proper 48X media (tho me being paranoid, I'll prob run it at 24X for most discs. > > > I want to give additional infos for some people on that topic: > > To have a perfect bit-to-bit-perfect signal transport you must create > additional info for error correction that is tranferred together with > the music data on a transmission line. The more error correction data > -dependent from > the music data- you create, the more bit-to-bit-perfect is the transport > from one point to another. That is valid for broadcasting and also for > storing digital data. storing, maybe, transmission, no. Media where the data is subject to degradation (CD or DAT), use data formats with error correction to get a 'clean' signal to the spdif transmitter. But there is no error correction built into spdif or aes data per se. Thus transmission is generally all or nothing. With hard drives, bits dont get 'corrected', they just get read, buffered, and streamed. the most common error when reading off a hard drive is dropped samples, where some data min the waveform might be missing. But there is no error correction other than that built into the file system (which is a higher order correction than the reed-solomon code used for cds and DATs). A cd orDAT stream can have 1 out of 1000 bits as errors and still be inaudible. usually one bad bit in a data file on a hard drive will make the entire file unreadable. --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. It plays fine however won't record. I didn't recieve an owners' manual with it and wondered if anyone had an extra one to sell or would be interested in making me a copy of it for $$. From: Keith Bode <t.tunakebo@verizon.net> Subject: FS: Sony DG15CL Dry Head Cleaning Cartriges Date: Sun, 08 Dec 2002 10:02:34 -0800 I know many of us do not like the idea of dry head cleaning, and I'm not particularly fond of it either. None the less, occasinally I do it, as do some of our other members. I was able to pick up another batch of these, and if anyone would like one, or more, I can pass them on for $5 each plus $1 shipping. Purchases of 5 or more will be sent via USPS Priority Mail, 5 to 10 will be $5 shipping. If you don't like dry head cleaning, refraining from sinking teeth in my butt would be appreciated, as I have already experienced this. Keith
From: Charles <cvm900@yahoo.com> Subject: Re:Mic question - no answer found in FAQ Date: Sun, 8 Dec 2002 10:29:30 -0800 (PST) I've used both of these mics, so maybe I can provide a bit of user experience that might help. I started with the C1000's about three years ago and switched to the NT3's last year. From a practical point of view the C1000 is more flexible because of the card/hypercard option, but the specs that are usually listed for these mics are not accurate. Most online retailers state the frequency response as 20 to 20k hz, but in reality the low end response is only about 50 hz according to the owners manual, and this is noticeable. My set of C1000's did not have an octave rolloff switch, so you may want to check that again. I now run the NT3's and have been much happier with their performance. The low end is great, though they tend to have a bit of roll off at the top end, so they are not quite as bright as the AKG's, but I'm still very pleased with the way the RODEs sound. I've made some really nice recordings with the NT3's, but their application can be limited because they are hypers. I was so impressed with the price and performance of the NT3's I got a second set of RODE mics, the NT5's, to use when I want to run cardioids. So as a general rule I use the NT3's indoors and the NT5's outdoor. Having two sets of mics is obviously more expensive than having one set with a convertible polar pattern, but I like the RODE mics better and wouldn't switch back to the AKG's. Where do you plan to do most of your taping? If it's mostly indoors I'd go with the NT3. RODE has a shorter history than AKG and for that reason they are not as well known. And RODE's website is sorely lacking in technical info, but their products seem to be every bit as well made as AKG's. I had no problems with any of the mics I had from either company. I've noticed that a lot of tapers I've talked to haven't heard of RODE so therefore aren't willing to give these mics a chance. I think the NT3 and the NT5 are pretty damn good mics for the money. I haven't recieved any complaints about the tapes I've made with them, and some people are even pleasantly suprised. Hope this helps. Feel free to write if you have any other questions about these mics.
From: "Tim Murray" <32things@sympatico.ca> Subject: FS @ ebay: Tascam DA-P1 + Extras Date: Sun, 8 Dec 2002 14:22:50 -0500 I'm selling my DA-P1, 3 external batteries, charger, XLR cables and Portabrace carrying case on ebay. It was a tough decision, as this unit has given me no problems since I've owned it. The reason for selling is that I just don't use it enough to justify still owning it. You can find the auction at: http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?MfcISAPICommand=ViewItem&item=928821 721 Cheers. Tim
From: Keith Bode <t.tunakebo@verizon.net> Subject: Internal Audio capable DAT Drive Date: Sun, 08 Dec 2002 13:47:07 -0800 I have placed a bid on an Audio Capable Internal DAT Drive on eBay. After placing the bid on item 2077592549, I've decided I really don't want it. I have 2 DAT decks, and really don't need this unit. If anyone wants it for my Bid price should I win, and it ends in about 7 hours, the drive is at $49.95, and my max bid is $55, let me know and it's your's for my bid price. If you want to outbid me, and bid $56, no hard feelings at all. Keith
