I read somewhere that when recording on the Sony TCD-100, you're
recommended NOT to use the backlight. Is this also the same on the
PCM-M1?
All help is appreciated.

Hi everyone, compliments of the season to one and all, I was wondering
if anyone has any HQ Ryan Adams they are willing to part with,
especially any nice SBDs (I recently got in Cleveland and San Diego
boards from this year amongst others and would love to get more), and
with CC being more taper friendly now I wondered if anyone had gotten
some nice recordings recently. Anyway, if anyone is in the spirit to
trade let me know and I'll forward my lists, thanks again, Janet

You should consider using a cue sheet with CDRWIN software
instead of EZCD Creator. With this software, you don't actually
divide the file, you just list the exact times where you want the cut
points. The format of CDRWIN cue sheets is a bit verbose but it's
not hard to master if you read the instructions that come with the
software.

gary wrote regarding recommendations for the WHO 2002 live encore series
CDs:
>There are WHO mailing lists and/or newsgroups that would
>probably discuss this more than DAT-Heads. Perhaps one of us
>could lurk over there and report back!
i belong to a couple WHO groups (i'm a major WHO-nut) & replied to a couple
people off-list about the releases, but kept my reply off-list since i did
not think there would be any major interest to this group as a whole
however, after still seeing people ask about this, i will share my response
here now
first, most people just buy the shows that they went to, but that doesn't
help ya if you didn't go to any!
me, i'm a crazy music-nut who addict so i bought all of 'em, but only
listened to about 6 so far (i went to 3 shows btw)
in general, i think they sound great, similar to the european tour pearl jam
live series, but it is disappointing in that the setlist barely changes if
at all, from one night to the next, unlike what pearl jam does on their live
shows (but to me the performances themselves differ greatly & i like hearing
all of them)
some people have complained that the lead vocals are slightly low in the
mix, lower in some shows than others, but still all are worthwhile sounding
IMO, especially for how pete's gtr is so up front in the mix it more than
makes up for it for me
in specific, some shows are being viewed in WHO circles as the "ones to
have" relating to a particularly good night, fiery performance, interesting
between song rants, townshend goofing with the audience, a gtr being
smashed, etc, but unfortunately i can't really remember all the details as
to which show is which (sorry!)
however, i can say that two of the shows i went to, HERSHEY PA and TORONTO,
CANADA were really really good performances (i haven't received the new
discs for them yet to comment on their sound quality)
of the ones i've listened to so far, my favorite is TINLEY PARK 8/24/02,
because at that show roger forgot the words to LOVE REIGN O'ER but they
continued to play it anyway, after which he bitched that that was
unacceptable for him to 4get the words, so they performed the song over
again in it's entirety!
there are some short writeups about the shows including tracklists at this
link, which should help point out some shows with special performance notes:
http://www.thewholive.de/2002/
and one who fan, who calls himself "white fang", has a webpage devoted to
the live series, with his own sound quality comments on some of the
shows...you can read them here:
http://www.thewho.net/fang/2002LiveCDs.htm
just checking some things now, there were a few shows that deviated from the
standard setlist for a song or 2 which also make them more "collectible", or
had some specific happenings such as:
- THE HOUSE OF BLUES, CHICAGO 9/23/02 has the only tour performance of "I
DON'T EVEN KNOW MYSELF", but at the expense of RELAY, ANOTHER TRICKY DAY,
and BARGAIN (legend has it that the band were going to come back & do an
extended encore of rare songs but for some reason they didn't, so this show
ended being shorter than intended; incidentally this was not a "normal" show
on the tour, it was a high priced special charity gig in a small venue)
- THE GORGE 7/6/02 features the only gtr-smash of the tour
- BOSTON 7/26/02 has the only tour performance of "I CAN SEE FOR MILES"
- at MSG 7/31 some idiot hits roger with a coke bottle at the end of "WON'T
GET FOOLED AGAIN", which prompts some interesting exchanges with the crowd,
including pete telling the crowd what to throw (money, girlfriends, watches)
and what not to throw etc
- and "I'M ONE" gets played by pete at only a few shows (8/1, 8/3, 8/30,
9/14, 9/15, 9/17....but 8/1 was not released in the series btw)
hope this helps, and happy WHOlidays,
- jon -

Subject: Midiman CO2 problem
Date: Mon, 16 Dec 2002 13:54:21 -0800 (PST)
I remember some discussion awhile back about some problems with the Midiman
CO2. Perhaps someone can shed some light on a problem I had last week. I
was taping Toad the Wet Sprocket and Counting Crows at the Wiltern in L.A.
I was using a borrowed Apogee AD500e and used my CO2 as a digital splitter.
Coax out of the Apogee and then I used optical out of the CO2 to a Sony
7-pin to my D100. And coax out of the CO2 to D8 using a Sony coax to 7-pin.
During the Toad set I have 5 dropouts of 0.7 to 0.8 seconds, one just
before the start, one during each of the first 3 songs, and one during the
9th song. The Counting Crows set has no such dropouts. After giving it a
good listen and trying to figure what the problem was, I thought maybe it
had something do do with the light, figuring I had turned on the light and
checked levels during the first few songs and then again during the 9th (which
was the loudest song of the set). However I ran some tests at home yesterday
and the light had no affect. I ran the following experiments, all with D5
analog XLR>ad500 as the source:
ad500 coax out > coax to 7-pin > D100 - no droputs
ad500 coax out > CO2 coax in > coax to 7-pin > D100 - no dropouts
ad500 coax out > CO2 coax in > optical to 7-pin > D100 - random dropouts
unrelated to light. Seemed like it got better the longer the CO2 was on,
like it was warming up or something.
So I figure the CO2 is bad, but because I just left it on between sets it
was all "warmed up" for the Crows set.
Any ideas?
I'm hoping the guy who patched out of me sends me an email (I only gave him
mine, didn't get his) so I can find out how his tape turned out, but it
appears like his should have been okay.
BTW, looking to trade Crows and Toad sets from 12/11 and 12/10 for any of
this week's shows at the Warfield. Crows allow open taping now, so there
should be some of you SF folks making some nice tapes on stnads at the
drink rail.
