From: david <slowtrain@comcast.net> Subject: to dampen that backlight Date: Tue, 17 Dec 2002 18:53:26 -0500 that blue light on the sony decks (and others) is a dead giveaway. i found the perfect fix: red contact photomasking sheet (i believe it's called). i bought mine (way back) from an art supply store on some college campus. it's the same kind of film used for safe lights in dark rooms (it only lets long wavelength light through). it's sticky on one side and cuts the bright blue (short wavelength) light, so the net effect is that you can check levels without the beacon going off. dwb At 05:50 PM 12/17/02 -0500, you wrote: >From: "lee bittner" <southsur@hotmail.com> >Subject: backlighting >Date: Mon, 16 Dec 2002 23:50:54 +0000 > >In addition to being pretty noticeable from all over the venue, the >backlight will, at 0 attenuation-setting, introduce a nasty hum on your >recording. From: "Todd & Margo Ramsden" <tramsden@earthlink.net> Subject: FS: Aiwa portable DAT Date: Tue, 17 Dec 2002 21:32:45 -0500 I guess it's time to let go of an extra DAT deck. I'm selling my Aiwa HDX-3000 portable DAT deck. Got a Sony D100 to replace my Aiwa last year (smaller, less power hungry) and haven't much been using the Aiwa since. Kept it just in case as a back-up portable, but the Nomad JB3 seems to do ok as a backup. The Aiwa HDX-3000 is exactly the same as the Aiwa/HHB1 and the Marantz PMD-700. Also known as the brick due to its size/shape--4" x 2.375" x 8.375". Runs on 10 internal AA batteries for 2 1/2 to 3 hours or can run on a 6v SLA--7.2Ahr allows for 4 1/2 to 5 hours record time. Has XLR line/mic inputs, RCA analog line inputs and outputs, RCA coax digital input and output (coax in/out--no need for those damn 7-pin cables!), as well as some kind of DIN connector digi in/out. Separate L-R record level knobs. Records from mic in (0db, 15db, and 30db attenuation) or from XLR line in or RCA line in. It has excellent mic and line in analog sections--sounds very nice even when used without outboard equipment and I've never had a problem with brickwalling, even when recording directly from very hot soundboards. Can also be used a home deck. It has a full-size transport and full-sized heads--truly a workhorse. Is not controlled by SCMS, so you can record whatever you want. Makes for a great dubbing deck. Unit is in excellent shape and the heads still look great. Transport was re-built last year by Paul at ProDig who replaced all the aging rubber in the transport, re-aligned it, etc.--i.e, a major overhaul. Comes with wall-wart (replacement, not original), pleather case, and battery cable for an SLA (for direct connection to the battery tabs, but shouldn't be too hard to add a 4-pin XLR if thats what you use). I'll also throw in a 5-pin XLR to dual(L-R) 3 pin XLR cable for use with the XLR input (XLR input is on 5-pin XLR). Looking for $250 plus shipping. -Todd

I like to run the cord of the little D100 remote down my sleeve and hold the remote in my palm. It just kind of dangles there so I don't have to be holding onto it the whole time. It's not illuminated, but I use a red-lens flashlight (actually a little disposable light with several layers of red fingernail polish painted on the bulb) to check it as needed. -- Mark Mayhle mark@mayhle.com
From: Rbglea@aol.com Subject: ISO Tom Petty 12/13 MSG Date: Tue, 17 Dec 2002 22:20:04 -0500 Hi All, Last Friday something went wrong in my attempt to tape Tom Petty at MSG, and I only came away w/ the last 40M. Sound came out excellent for the last 40M (SKM-140s>M2>M1), but I would be very interested in a complete version, or at least the first 90M, of what turned out to be a great show. No other Tom Petty to offer on DAT, but plenty of Who, Clapton, U2, REM, and others. If anyone's interested in a trade please email me privately. Thanks, Rob

Postel \(home\)" <ericpostel@compuserve.com> Subject: Re Little Feat Waiting for Columbus 2002 Date: Tue, 17 Dec 2002 17:40:05 -0600 The band, which has always been pro-taper, specifically asked that the show not be recorded or traded. This week one band member told a taper that they were disappointed with how the audio tapes came out but that the video was fine and might yet be released commercially. Nothing was said about changing the band's request not to trade it. The concert was a benefit and presumably the sales would at least partially, if not entirely, go to the charities. Eric
From: Alec McLane <amclane@snet.net> Subject: Sony PCM-M1 recording to Turtle Beach Pinnacle Date: Wed, 18 Dec 2002 00:04:18 -0500 I'm having a problem transferring from a PCM-M1 to the digital input of a Pinnacle. There is no digital signal detected when I try recording. Unfortunately Turtle Beach isn't much help because they've discontinued this sound card, but one answer they do offer that seems to make sense is that portable DATs like this Sony don't transmit a clock signal all the time since the digital I/O is a single port and the machine defaults to record mode. So the receiver doesn't receive a continuous clock signal and therefore can't detect digital input (or something like that, I guess). However 2 tests suggested it's more complicated than this: The same setup works fine on a Mac G3 with the Audiomedia III card, so there's obviously no clock-signal problem there. And my Pinnacle also doesn't receive digital input from a non-portable DAT recorder, the Sony DTC-A7, which has separate digital inputs and outputs. The Pinnacle has a separate S/PDIF bracket with coax input and output jacks, but also allows you to set a jumper and use the 1/8" mic input as digital input instead. I've tried both ways with the same result. Does anybody have similar experiences? Is there evidence of ANY digital device that can be recorded with the Pinnacle? Alec McLane
From: michael ryan <luv2brew@yahoo.com> Subject: FS Tix - Clark, Lovett, Ely & Hiatt Date: Tue, 17 Dec 2002 21:33:01 -0800 (PST) Hey Now All!! One week to get rid of these tix. I have four extra tix available to the Fox Theatre shows in Redwood City , Sunday, Feb. 16th . They are 3rd or 4th row center. I am looking for experienced stealther's as I only have a DAP1 and Akg 391s so kinda hard to stealth. These tix are XLNT for taping as they are dead center floor, 3rd or 4th row. Date change is the reason others are giving these up. However they must respond by the 24th of this month. So if no taper takes them they go back to the box office. I want an experienced taper to help collect these shows and these are great tix for that purpose... Price is about $90 with all the tax's and what not... That is face value and all we ask is that if you get a good copy please include us in the offerings... Please let me know ASAP.... With my M1 left plugged into the S/PDIF input of my Echo Mia, I always see a clock signal from the M1, even with the unit stopped and the tape unloaded. With the M1 at 48khz, if I forget to switch back to the soundcard driver's internal clock, my mp3s and cdda files play fast. You should be able to loop a coax cable from the soundcard output to it's input to check the card's digital functioning. On my Mia driver, the external s/pdif sync indicator will light up. I'll bet that your card uses a Crystal Semiconductor CS84xx S/PDIF tranceiver and that it's given up the ghost. Yours are essentially the same symptoms I had when Echo shipped me a bad replacement card with a dead CS8412.
From: Todd Romero <todd@routeflap.net> Subject: Re: Sony PCM-M1 recording to Turtle Beach Pinnacle Date: Wed, 18 Dec 2002 04:09:42 -0500 (EST) according to the turtle beach site, there should be an advancecd input option that allows you to set a fallback sample rate if the card cannot sync to the external device. the other reason their 'knowledge base' gave for having no digital input signal was: "If the digital I/O card is installed pointing in the wrong direction, the digital audio may not work." "Install the digital I/O board underneath the SIMM sockets on the card, covering the large socketed chip" On Wed, 18 Dec 2002, Alec McLane wrote: > I'm having a problem transferring from a PCM-M1 to the digital input of a > Pinnacle.
