Anyone know any compelling reason why I might want to
use a full size deck to play a DAT into my PC for
editing and conversion to CD (rather than a portable)?
The only thing I can think of is that there's probably
better error correction in the full size. And full
size heads - but does that matter? The problem is,
my stereo system and computer are at opposite ends
of the house.
TIA

I have an extra taper ticket for the xmas jam this saturday.
I'll take face, or trade part of it towards floor space in
asheville. Given the late date, we'll have to meet at the
venue.

and would love to work something out with anyone who got this show on either
DAT, CDR or MiniDisc. Thanks!!

Subject: CD Track marks/cue sheets

I'll describe my method of making tracks indexes for CDs:
1. Load wave file in Goldwave, put cue points at desired points.
2. "copy all" cuepoints to clipboard and paste into a text file.
3. I used to use a small Excell spreadsheet to do the .xxx * 75 for the
CDRwin cuesheet, but then I wrote a small program that just reads the text
file and writes a cuesheet. The new program even takes the cuepoint name
and makes it the song title for CD-text.
4. Make final edits to the cuesheet in a text editor - usually just the name
of the wave file.
If anybody is interested, I will send them the program. However, CDwave
(which I just discovered thanks to this list) seems to work just fine.

how could they commercially release a video that didn't have a good
audio soundtrack?! i guess as long as its reasonable.
i wonder what happened with the audio tapes - i imagine if they used
the same mix as they did in the hall its no wonder it didn't come out
well, but i can't imagine they didn't do a seperate multi-track mix -
for the quick put-together the sound guys did a pretty stand-up job on
the live mix though, i'm not knockin' them one bit. also, the flow of
the show was great, very little downtime between guests coming on and
even very little "oh its your lead now" and then nothing coming out
not sure what video feed they could be talking about coming out good -
i sat right behind the only one i saw them running and it was a tripod
right above the soundboard and it never moved (still could be decent,
i'm not saying i'm big on these roving cut/pan, multi-camera deals
being the only way to go) but it didn't pan or zoom *at all* i don't
think, and i saw the power cord come out of the socket at least once
when somebody hit it (oh they was bummin'!) the cord was on the stairs
> Nothing was said about
> changing the band's request not to trade it. The concert was a benefit and

i don't mean to start a stink (i'm looking for insightful commentary
here, not flames guys!) but am just curious how trading an audience
version of the show could possibly cut ten cents out of possible
charity fund raising of a pro soundboard release!?
while i'm on my soapbox ;-) might as well see what other's thoughts
are on why they released the rather hodge-podged "raw & ripe tomatos"
2x2CD each things - although i haven't heard the whole sets yet, from
other reports i've heard they're not that great. there are tons better
things in circulation. ultrasonic '73 or '74 are just great, i think
the masters of them were lost (maybe when that recording studio on a
boat sank in the baltimore harbor - what a nightmare!) and of course
denver 1973. most of 1976 was professionally recorded (and broadcast
on FM god bless 'em!)
they could probably get the tapes from safety clones of one of the
ultrasonics from WLIR or something - i don't know. they could hit up
WBCN boston for that wonderful halloween 1975 show.
i'm not sure who is doing the sound decisions for the band:
1) the audio on the RockPalast 1977 DVD (a great buy anyway - check it
out!) is horrible - i have a 1st gen FM cassette of it that sounds
better (used way too much compression to go to AC-3 2CH audio i think,
i don't know much about DVD audio). and then they went to all the
trouble of doing a running commentary (which is great - just paul, bill
and lowell's wife sitting around watching the video and rapping) and
then left off the absolutely must-have 20 minute interview done by the
german announcer with lowell!? i just don't get it. he demonstrates
slide techniques and what he uses [german accent on] "der sears &
roebuck 3/8 inch socket, ya" and plays a nice "china white"
2) china white on hoy-hoy suffers from similar too much NR issues i
think, there is a circulating version of that that sounds much better i
feel
3) on the other hand - hats off for the waiting for columbus rerelease w/
bonus cuts!! (of course only making up for years of the horrible 1 CD
release with muddy sound and missing two cuts and other in- between
song raps cut out)
4) they are still sitting on the video and audio from the lowell george
1979 benefit because they couldn't get releases from all the artists
(so i've heard, not sure how much its that or unhappiness w/ outcome of
those recordings either), i'm uncertain this 2002 one would be any
different (but maybe it will and might even account for why bonnie
raitt and/or emmylou harris were not present at the DC 2002 one?)
5) someday "eldorado slim" has to be released - even the not high
quality audience version from santa monica '73 would suffice - its
just got to be heard by the masses!
anyway, just some thoughts - don't take any of it too seriously
folks... feat are the real mccoy and i love 'em
RIP lowell

Anyone know of a better way to track him down than bhay@kpt.nuwc.navy.mil?
To make a long story short, I advertised a Pro-Digital 7-pin in/out cable
here in October. I got a ton of replies for it but since I know Bob from
seeing him at a lot of shows here (SeaWA), I thought I could trust him and
sent it him. After about three weeks, *I* had to email him asking if he got
it and he replied that he did and a check (for $100) was on its way to me.
Well, its been over two months now and he doesn't reply to my emails. And
FWIW, I've bought and sold a bunch of items over dat-heads in the past
without any problems at all (always using C.O.D). Thanks for the bandwidth

I'm sorry friend but I've forgotten your name. We taped Los Lobos together
this summer & chatted between the Flaming Lips & Beck sets. I believe your
name may be Shawn? Jamie? You were first row of the 1st balcony, long
brown hair & glasses. If you can get in touch with me I'd appreciate it, my
recording sounds awful & my friends is missing the last 15 minutes. Hope
to hear from you, Chris

HI.
I found a few Hewlett Packard's 35470a-35480a units, some seem working OK.
Does anybody know if they are compatible or Flashable for use with DAT2WAV ?
And in case which firmware should be flashed in.
Thank you, Mike.

AFAIK no HP drives have ever been compatible with the archive/python nor
the sony audio capable firmware.
