From: Mike Perkins <mperkins@telus.net> Subject: Building a new platform Date: Fri, 03 Jan 2003 09:43:48 -0800 Beloved Dat Heads: The time has come to consider dedicating a machine to tasks solely related to DAT and sundry musical activities. The activities would comprise: 1 Creation and editing of .wav files from various sources including A. Digital Outputs of Fostex D5 or Sony TCD D8 via TOS-Link B. Analog outputs of audio pre-amps and various MIDI synths . Inputs to the audio pre-amps could be microphones, record player, cassette player, musical instruments. C. Digital transfer of audio from CDs 2. Burning aforesaid .wav files to regular CDs. 3. Editing of MIDI files and auditioning them via software sequencer and external MIDI sound modules and audio gear. 4. Production of musical scores via Finale and relevant printer. A dedicated platform unencumbered with multi-tasking and running Windows ME for compatibility with Finale and various MIDI oriented applications would avoid undesirable contention for CPU memory service during real-time intensive file transfers to CD. I would be interested in the thoughts of our resident techno gurismi re appropriate hardware to realize the above machine. Issues I would like to hear about are Motherboard selection i.e performance and - integrated versus plugged in items such as video cards, modems, and sound cards, and with respect to the latter, experience with sound cards having front panel access as opposed to rear access enjoyed by nobody except cave men. Selection of a suitable cabinet is another important topic . Cooling, shielding , quick access to innards, neat cabling and realistic allowance for expansion, especially of drives CD, DVD,DAT,ZIP etc. but not forgetting front panel hardware for I/O. There must be some of you out there in the "been that, done there" category. I'm keen to hear your views. May be others are just as curious as I and on the verge of off-loading an overworked platform that serves, text editing, accounting, spread-sheeting, communications, FAX, Email, CAD, Irrigation control, Security system operation, as well as Free Cell and Solitaire. A Happy and prosperous New Year to all Mike
From: "Mike BB" <mike@oongowa.com> Subject: RE: Nomad Date: Fri, 3 Jan 2003 13:21:38 -0500 I recently sold off my old gear and was planning on recording with a laptop but I decided to save some $ and went with the NomadJB3 instead. My current rig is Oktava MC-012> UA-5> NJB3. I've used the rig twice in the field and had mixed results. A couple sets turned out fine while others were littered with clicks and pops. I just upgraded the firmware and have done some testing at home, so far so good. I'll definitely report here with any findings, good or bad. I made a leap of faith when I bought this thing but I was confident that the people at Creative would get it right sooner or later. It's really nice to not have to deal with DAT tapes anymore! From: Thomas Wulf <TaWulf@wulfware.de> Subject: RE: Nomad Reply-To: Thomas Wulf <TaWulf@wulfware.de> Date: Fri, 3 Jan 2003 21:28:58 +0100 >> What does reading the time code have to do with not resampling? Everything, Seth. If you can't read the time code you have to 're-sample' the signal. This is nothing else but 'listening' to the samples according to your own time code. But no two crystals are ticking with the same speed..! (All the children sing: "no two crystals are alike under the heavens..") >>just sampled at the appropriate rate, end of story. >>.. >>just recording the bits is easier than playing with them. That's what one would think but it isn't. One would think that simply 'taking all the bits' would be easier than 'playing with them'. But that is not an option, when you don't know when you have 'all' of the bits. And without agreeing on the correct clock you just don't know.. Just look at all the soho sound cards! Do you think it had really been easier/cheaper to build them *with* rather than *without* the ability for complete and bit perfect digital input? I see the jukebox devices as consumer and also as a recording devices but not as pro gear built for producing bit perfect digital copies. So my interest in this detail is rather academic but I'd still like to know.. >>The Nomad 3 most certainly DOES NOT resample the optical input signal. Mike, so you can input a track from a CD and compare the track loaded to a PC to an (eg) EACed version? Same number and values of samples? Sounds great, unlikely imo, but great; anybody actually been there? :):):) Thomas mailto:TaWulf@wulfware.de

Reply-To: "Rich Vining" <rvining@emory.edu> Date: Fri, 3 Jan 2003 15:47:17 -0500 I was informed recently that there is an Atlanta tapers/traders group in existence, and somebody here on DAT-Heads would have the low-down. If so, I'd like to get more info. I've been in Atlanta about 1.5 years and would like to be able to keep tabs on what the locals are up to. From: Joe Bethity <taperjoe1901@yahoo.com> Subject: 4 D-cell powering of a D100 Date: Fri, 3 Jan 2003 15:03:15 -0800 (PST) I've seen some articles about this, but am still puzzeled how you can put in 6v into the D100 and not fry the thing. I tried with my existing 4 D-cell pack from my D7, but the display blinked on the D100 so I ripped it out immediatly. What do ya'll do to power the D100 or M1 externally? Thanks! But that is not an option, when you don't know > when you have 'all' of the bits. And without agreeing on the correct > clock you just don't know.. Locking in to follow a clock to get all the bits is one thing; once you have them, changing them by resampling is another. If you're not getting all the bits, resampling is the least of your problems. > Just look at all the soho sound cards! Do you think it had really been > easier/cheaper to build them *with* rather than *without* the ability > for complete and bit perfect digital input? Are those the ones that only allow one input speed, so they _have to_ resample everything not at that speed, and it's easier to resample to their clock than to do the difficult arithmetic to resample according to what the input clock _says_ it is? From: mike hooker <mhooker@optonline.net> Subject: soundproofing a music room Date: Fri, 03 Jan 2003 20:50:02 -0500 hi, first , i want to say thanks to all who posted, the volume of great info was astounding. at first , i hesistated to even ask on the list about soundproofing a music listening room, and was quite surprised that many share my dilemma .its a much more complicated task than i thought. based on all ive heard, fiberglass thermal batting is a waste of time. i think at this point my only economical solution is a drop acoustical ceiling. it will be a bit tough to do, its not a flat surface, there are drops for the house main beam, and a run of plumbing. the sheetrock ceiling now is screwed directly to the joists of the floor above, making the ceiling/ floor combo one big speaker of sorts. can anyone estimate what the percentage of quieting a drop ceiling with a 3 in air gap to the orig ceiling will be? if its not signifigant, i'll blow the money for materials on some nice headphones instead. i never really liked wearing phones, so can anyone recommend super comfortable phones with realistic sound ? i guess a headphone amp is also in order, or is that not really needed. i use a pioneer a-60 amp in my system. a great big thanks to all. please see my music trading page: New URL http://hometown.aol.com/mhooker216/myhomepage/index.html being its AOL, its not always up. try it a few times, or ask me for a text list. thanks have fun, mike hooker
